The little stories and the traditions that grew up around Saint
Martin de Porres of Peru are fascinating and every bit as charming
as the stories told of Saint Francis of Assisi. But as
Garcia-Rivera shows, these deceptively simple stories reveal much
more. For the first time Garcia-Rivera unpacks these stories, using
the semiotic method and insights garnered from the works of Robert
Schreiter, Eugene Genovese, and Antonio Gramsci. To build this
method of theological reflection Garcia-Rivera addresses such
questions as: does an authentic Latin American theology exist? If
it exists, where and how can it be expounded? What does Saint
Martin de Porres beatification process tell us? How do the little
stories reflect and extend the great theological debate of
Valladolid in 1550, with BartolomA de las Casas and Juan Gines de
Sepulveda arguing whether the Indians were even human beings? Using
the semiotics of culture to delve into these stories, the author
provides rich and astonishing insights into the power of the little
story, told and retold over time by ordinary folk, that make
possible the Big Story of universal principles of human reality.
Throughout your life, have you found that you could not always find
the words to describe how you feel? Could you have used something
that would helped you understand things better? Would you want to
feel that you are not the only one? This is the purpose of my book.
Over the last decade, there has been increasing debate as to
whether feminism and evolutionary psychology can co-exist. Such
debates often conclude with a resounding "no," often on the grounds
that the former is a political movement while the latter is a field
of scientific inquiry. In the midst of these debates, there has
been growing dissatisfaction within the field of evolutionary
psychology about the way the discipline (and others) have
repeatedly shown women to be in passive roles when it comes to
survival and reproduction. Evolutionary behavioral research has
made significant strides in the past few decades, but continues to
take for granted many theoretical assumption that are perhaps, in
light of the most recent evidence, misguided. As a result, the
research community has missed important areas of research, and in
some cases, will likely come to inaccurate conclusions based on
existing dogma, rather than rigorous, theoretically driven
research. Bias in the field of evolutionary psychology echoes the
complaints against the political movement attached to academic
feminisms. This is an intellectual squabble where much is at stake,
including a fundamental understanding of the evolutionary
significance of women's roles in culture, mothering, reproductive
health and physiology, mating, female alliances, female aggression,
and female intrasexual competition.
Evolution's Empress identifies women as active agents within the
evolutionary process. The chapters in this volume focus on topics
as diverse as female social interactions, mate competition and
mating strategies, motherhood, women's health, sex differences in
communication and motivation, sex discrimination, and women in
literature. The volume editors bring together a diverse range of
perspectives to demonstrate ways in which evolutionary approaches
to human behavior have thus far been too limited. By reconsidering
the role of women in evolution, this volume furthers the goal of
generating dialogue between the realms of women's studies and
evolutionary psychology.
James R. Garcia was born and raised in Rocky Ford, Colorado. Went
to High School and then went into the Marine Corps, for four (4)
years. I spent a large portion of my life working as a Manager of
Purchasing and Subcontracts for a number of Major Subcontractors in
the United States. Such as Bechtel Corporation, Fluor Corporation,
Rockwell International Corporation, The Boeing Company, and Ball
Aerospace Corporation. I retired in 1999. Upon retiring and during
my working career I was always buying selling and studying art and
started and owned an Art Gallery in Kennewick, Washington, known as
Garcia's Americana Art Gallery. I sold and studied the art of
Edward S. Curtis, Carl Moon and Western Art in General. I showed
and attended the Major Art Shows all over the Southwest.I have
lectured at Galleries and Museums, in Colorado mostly on Edward S.
Curtis and Carl Moon Photographs. I have also testified in Court on
the collections of Curtis and Carl Moon on the authentication of
many of their works of photography. The work and study of
authenticating a piece of art is a most satisfying effort and
hopefully there will be people in the study of art and becoming an
artist, that will be able to put their efforts and study in the
direction of authenticating art. I hope that my story, "The
Authentication of Rembrandt's Titus F 1655," will help students to
look into other avenues to follow in the field of art.James R.

Granular matter displays a variety of peculiarities that
distinguish it from other appearances studied in condensed matter
physics and renders its overall mathematical modelling somewhat
arduous. Prominent directions in the modelling granular flows are
analyzed from various points of view. Foundational issues,
numerical schemes and experimental results are discussed. The
volume furnishes a rather complete overview of the current research
trends in the mechanics of granular matter. Various chapters
introduce the reader to different points of view and related
techniques. New models describing granular bodies as complex bodies
are presented. Results on the analysis of the inelastic Boltzmann
equations are collected in different chapters. Gallavotti-Cohen
symmetry is also discussed.
Mankind's preoccupation with survival in this age has given renewed
impetus to the idea of a world community deeply concerned with the
prevention of friction between nations. The achievement to date has
been largely in terms of efforts to control acts of aggression
committed by governments. Most people have assumed that the
military rivalry between the great powers is the only threat
confronting the world today. While readily conceding that this
threat has placed mankind in a highly precarious situation, this
book, on the other hand, reflects my conviction that any program
designed to attain world peace will be significantly incomplete
without the control of hostile actions which private persons have
been known to commit against foreign nations. Experience shows that
these actions not only endanger the good re lations between states,
but are also likely to plunge the world com munity into wars, thus
spreading destruction and human suffering everywhere.
This volume contains the proceedings of the Fifth International
Conference on the Micromechanics of Granular Media, Powders and
Grains 2005. Powders and Grains is an international scientific
conference held every 4 years that brings together engineers and
physicists interested in the micromechanics of granular media. The
book is a guide to the hottest topics in the general problem of the
microscopic description and understanding of granulates. Powders
and Grains offer an excellent overview of the state of the art
research on granular media. Authors from all over the world and
different backgrounds discuss their most up-to-date research
interests and results in more than 280 concise articles. Included
are experimental, numerical, and theoretical investigations by both
engineers and physicists. The result is a valuable tool for
engineers, physicists as well as for applied mathematicians,
geologists, and other scientists concerned with problems ranging
from the most basic and theoretical, to the daily problems of
industry production, process performance or construction design.

Few things come more naturally to us than sex-or so it would seem.
Yet to a chimpanzee, the sexual practices and customs we take for
granted would appear odd indeed. He or she might wonder why we
bother with inconveniences like clothes, why we prefer to make love
on a bed, and why we fuss so needlessly over privacy. Evolution and
Human Sexual Behavior invites us into the thought-experiment of
imagining human sex from the vantage point of our primate cousins,
in order to underscore the role of evolution in shaping all that
happens, biologically and behaviorally, when romantic passions are
aroused. Peter Gray and Justin Garcia provide an interdisciplinary
synthesis that draws on the latest discoveries in evolutionary
theory, genetics, neuroscience, comparative primate research, and
cross-cultural sexuality studies. They are our guides through an
exploration of the patterns and variations that exist in human
sexuality, in chapters covering topics ranging from the evolution
of sex differences and reproductive physiology to the origins of
sexual play, monogamous unions, and the facts and fictions
surrounding orgasm. Intended for generally curious readers of all
stripes, this up-to-date, one-volume survey of the evolutionary
science of human sexual behavior explains why sexuality has
remained a core fascination of human beings throughout time and
across cultures.
The experience of Mexican Americans in the United States has been
marked by oppression at the hands of the legal system--but it has
also benefited from successful appeals to the same system. Mexican
Americans and the Law illustrates how Mexican Americans have played
crucial roles in mounting legal challenges regarding issues that
directly affect their political, educational, and socioeconomic
status.
Each chapter highlights historical contexts, relevant laws, and
policy concerns for a specific issue and features abridged versions
of significant state and federal cases involving Mexican Americans.
Beginning with "People v. Zammora" (1940), the trial that was a
precursor to the Zoot Suit Riots in Los Angeles during World War
II, the authors lead students through some of the most important
and precedent-setting cases in American law:
- Educational equality: from segregation concerns in "MA(c)ndez v.
Westminster" (1946) to unequal funding in "San Antonio Independent
School District vs. RodrA-guez" (1973)
- Gender issues: reproductive rights in "Madrigal v. Quilligan"
(1981), workplace discrimination in "EEOC v. Hacienda Hotel"
(1989), sexual violence in "Aguirre-Cervantes v. INS" (2001)
- Language rights: "AAiguez v. Arizonans for Official English"
(1995), "GarcA-a v. Gloor" (1980), "Serna v. Portales Municipal
Schools" (1974)
- Immigration-: search and seizure questions in "U.S. v.
Brignoni-Ponce" (1975) and "U.S. v. MartA-nez-Fuerte" (1976);
public benefits issues in "Plyler v. Doe" (1982) and "League of
United Latin American Citizens v. Wilson" (1997)
- Voting rights: redistricting in "White v. Regester" (1973) and
"Bush v. Vera" (1996)
- Affirmative action: "Hopwood v. State of Texas" (1996) and
"Coalition for Economic Equity v. Wilson" (1997)
- Criminal justice issues: equal protection in "HernAndez v.
Texas" (1954); jury service in "HernAndez v. New York" (1991); self
incrimination in "Miranda v. Arizona" (1966); access to legal
counsel in "Escobedo v. Illinois" (1964)
With coverage as timely as the 2003 Supreme Court decision on
affirmative action, "Mexican Americans and the Law" offers
invaluable insight into legal issues that have impacted Mexican
Americans, other Latinos, other racial minorities, and all
Americans. Discussion questions, suggested readings, and Internet
sources help students better comprehend the intricacies of law.
Encounters: Change, Progress, and Traditions in American History,
Volume 1 offers students an insightful selection of readings on the
history of the United States spanning from pre-Columbian times
through the Reconstruction Era. The carefully selected articles in
this volume reflect new scholarship and fresh perspectives
regarding key concepts and events in American history. The book
begins with a chapter that dismantles prevalent assumptions,
misconceptions, and generalizations regarding Native American
peoples and how they lived prior to the arrival of Christopher
Columbus on the continent. Additional chapters proceed
chronologically, offering students readings regarding European
exploration in the thirteenth through fifteenth centuries, the
Columbian Exchange, the development of American colonies, and the
impetus of the American Revolution. Students read about the
challenges of establishing an independent nation, the growth of
markets and industrialization, slavery, manifest destiny, and
sectionalism. Closing chapters address the American Civil War and
the Reconstruction Era. Each chapter includes an introduction to
provide context for the readings and discussion questions to
promote critical thinking. Providing students with diverse
viewpoints regarding critical historical events, Encounters is well
suited for introductory courses in American history.
This action packed tale of romance, adventure, sex and the enemy
takes place during a war. In its thrill a minute pages, it tells
about a naive young ensign and four navy nurses set ashore and
forgotten on an enemy held island way out nowhere in the war torn
Pacific. Bombarded by passing warships, lashed by tropical storms
and in constant peril, they cling to the sactuary that sustains
them, fortify their camp and prepare for battle. In fear of their
strange surroundings they explore the island, take reckless
chances, engage in daring escapades and become infatuated with the
inexplicable euphoria of playing death defying games with the
enemy. Surrounded by all this and their own raw emotions, the girls
find solice in nights of bliss, lover's trysts and days of sheer
pandemonium with the ony man at their disposal. Amidst all the
subsequent hate, animosity and revenge, a torrid love affair is
born. And all the while the enemy is watching, waiting, honing his
wares and ready to pounce. Eventually he launches a frontal attack
right into the teeth of the unorthodox fighting techniques of the
ensign's bedraggled army of female warriors. But now, let us go
back and see how they all got there in the first place.
