Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
Green Criminology has the potential to provide not only a different
way of examining and making sense of various forms of crime and
control responses, but can also make explicable much wider
connections which are not generally well understood. As all
societies face up to the need to confront harms against the
environment, other animals and humanity, criminology will have a
major role to play. This book will be an essential part of this
process. This edited collection brings together internationally
renowned scholars to explore green criminology through the
interdisciplinary lenses of power, justice and harm. The chapters
provide innovative case study analyses from North America, Europe
and Australia that seek to advance theoretical, policy and practice
discourses about environmental harm. The book unifies transnational
debates in environmental law, policy and justice, and in doing so
examines international agreements and policy within diverse
environmental discourses of sociology, criminology and political
economy. Emerging Issues in Green Criminology is an essential
source for students, scholars and policy makers in this rapidly
growing area of criminology, as well as environmental studies more
broadly. The international range of contributors include Lieselot
Bisschop (University College Ghent, Belgium), Avi Brisman (Eastern
Kentucky University, USA), Matthew Hall (University of Sheffield,
UK), M.H.A Kluin (Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands),
Olga Knight (University of Colorado, Denver, USA), Peter Martin
(Queensland University of Technology, Australia), Hanneke Mol
(University of Kent, UK and Utrecht University, Netherlands), Angus
Nurse (Birmingham City University, UK), Ragnhild Sollund
(University of Oslo, Norway), Nigel South (University of Essex,
UK), Paul B. Stretesky (University of Colorado, Denver, USA),
Gudrun Vande Walle (University College Ghent, Belgium) and Rob
White (University of Tasmania, Australia).
This book applies a psycholinguistic perspective to instructed
second language acquisition, seeking to bridge the gap between
second language acquisition research and language teaching
practices. It challenges the traditional divide between conscious
and unconscious processes, or explicit and implicit learning, and
re-envisions this as a continuum of the varying levels of
consciousness which can be applied by learners to different
language behaviors in the second language classroom. It applies
this model to learner development and the classroom context,
discussing pedagogical applications for instructors at all levels.
This book will be of interest to researchers and graduate students
in second language acquisition, psycholinguistics and language
pedagogy. The accessible discussion of research findings,
pedagogical approaches and classroom tasks and activities make this
book particularly relevant for language teachers, providing the
tools needed to apply second language acquisition research in their
classroom.

This book provides the first comprehensive compilation of
cutting-edge research on Merapi volcano on the island of Java,
Indonesia, one of the most iconic volcanoes in the world. It
integrates results from both the natural (geology, petrology,
geochemistry, geophysics, physical volcanology) and social
sciences, and provides state-of-the-art information on volcano
monitoring, the assessment of volcanic hazards, and risk mitigation
measures. As one of Indonesia's most active and dangerous
volcanoes, Merapi is perhaps best known for its pyroclastic density
currents, which are produced by gravitational or explosive lava
dome failures (commonly referred to as Merapi-type nuees ardentes).
Merapi's eruptions have posed a persistent threat to life, property
and infrastructure within the densely populated areas on the
volcano's flanks, as demonstrated most recently by catastrophic
eruptions, which attracted worldwide media interest.
This is the first published guide to Herkimer diamonds, striking
quartz crystals, that includes all important aspects of interest to
anyone curious about this unique form of the mineral quartz. Over
210 vivid color images of important specimens, associated minerals,
and field shots illustrate the informative text and enhance the
reader s experience. The text includes the most recent scientific
information regarding Herkimer diamonds' geological and
mineralogical history, where they can currently be found,
descriptions of important historic locations, and the inclusion of
noteworthy peripheral localities. The specific methods used to
effectively field collect Herkimer diamonds are detailed, including
photos of mining methods and a discussion of collecting strategy.
Additionally, the mines are enumerated, the gear readers need is
detailed, specimen preparation, mineral collections, and associated
minerals recounted. This is the essential guide for every collector
of these well known and much sought minerals, a guide only a
seasoned field collector can provide."

In September 1996, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the
Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), prohibiting nuclear
explosions worldwide, in all environments. The treaty calls for a
global verification system, including a network of 321 monitoring
stations distributed around the globe, a data communications
network, an international data center, and onsite inspections, to
verify compliance. The problem of identifying small-magnitude
banned nuclear tests and discriminating between such tests and the
background of earthquakes and mining-related seismic events, is a
challenging research problem. Because they emphasize CTBT
verification research, the 12 papers in this special volume
primarily addresses regional data recorded by a variety of arrays,
broadband stations, and temporarily deployed stations. Nuclear
explosions, earthquakes, mining-related explosions, mine collapses,
single-charge and ripple-fired chemical explosions from Europe,
Asia, North Africa, and North America are all studied. While the
primary emphasis is on short-period, body-wave discriminants and
associated source and path corrections, research that focuses on
long-period data recorded at regional and teleseismic distances is
also presented Hence, these papers demonstrate how event
identification research in support of CTBT monitoring has expanded
in recent years to include a wide variety of event types, data
types, geographic regions and statistical techniques.
This book evaluates the progress of schizophrenia science by summarizing what is known about how patients with the illness differ from healthy people. The tools of meta-analysis are first explained and then employed to make the strength and consistency of these differences explicit. Beginning with the study of symptoms, then moving through the search for objective disease markers, findings on the cognitive functions, structure, physiology, chemistry, and development of the brain, this book is a journey into the enigma of madness and its science. What emerges is an illness that reveals itself most strongly in thought processes, not biology. Schizophrenia is an anomaly at the frontier of mind and brain, but In Search of Madness points the way to its solution.
