Embodied Social Justice introduces an embodied approach to working
with oppression. Grounded in current research, the book integrates
key findings from education, psychology, sociology, and somatic
studies while addressing critical gaps in how these fields have
addressed pervasive patterns of social injustice. At the heart of
the book, a series of embodied narratives bring to life everyday
experiences of oppression through evocative descriptions of how
power implicitly shapes body image, interpersonal space, eye
contact, gestures, and the use of touch. This second edition
includes two new "body stories" from research participants living
and working in the global South. Supplemental guidelines for
practice, updated references, and new community resources have also
been added. Designed for social workers, counselors, educators, and
other human service professionals working with members of
disenfranchised and marginalized communities, Embodied Social
Justice offers a conceptual framework and model of practice to
assist in identifying, unpacking, and transforming embodied
experiences of oppression from the inside out.

'A Complete Identity' is an examination of the hero figure in the
works of G.A. Henty (1832-1902) and George MacDonald (1824-1905)
and a reassessment of oppositional critiques of their writing. It
demonstrates the complementary characteristics of the hero figure,
which construct a complete identity commensurate with the Victorian
ideal hero. The relationship between the expansion of the British
Empire and youthful heroism is established through investigation of
the Victorian political, social, and religious milieu, the
construct of the child, and the construct of the hero. A connection
between the exotic geographical space of empire and the unknown
psychological space is drawn through examination of representation
of the "other" in the work of Henty and MacDonald. This book
demonstrates that Henty's work is more complex than the
stereotypically linear, masculine, imperialistic critique of his
stories that historical realism allows, and that MacDonald's work
displays more evidence of historical embedding and ideological
interpellation than the critical focus on his work as fantasy and
fairy tale considers.
In working with graduate students in engineering physics at the
University of Virginia on research problems in gas kinetics,
radiation biology, ion materials interactions, and upper-atmosphere
chemistry, it became quite apparent that there was no satisfactory
text available to these students on atomic and molecular
collisions. For graduate students in physics and quantum chemistry
and researchers in atomic and molecular interactions there are a
large number of excellent advanced texts. However, for students in
applied science, who require some knowledge and understanding of
col lision phenomena, such texts are of little use. These students
often have some background in modern physics and/or chemistry but
lack graduate level course work in quantum mechanics. Such
students, however, tend to have a good intuitive grasp of classical
mechanics and have been exposed to wave phenomena in some form (e.
g. , electricity and magnetism, acoustics, etc. ). Further, their
requirements in using collision processes and employing models do
not generally include the use of formal scattering theory, a large
fraction of the content of many advanced texts. In fact, most
researchers who work in the area of atomic and molecular collisions
tend to pride themselves on their ability to describe results using
simple theoretical models based on classical and semiclassical
methods.
Both an introduction to economic principles as they relate to
building design and a practical guide to putting these principles
to effective use. It brings together a variety of specialized
topics relevant to building economics, including cost estimating,
life cycle costing, cost indexes, capital budgeting, decision
analysis, and real estate feasibility analysis. Develops these
concepts within the framework of an integrated approach to design
and management decision-making, simplifying where appropriate, but
never at the expense of intellectual content. Incorporating a
number of sample spreadsheet models, "The Economics of Building" is
a practical resource and guide to the financial assessment of
planning, design, and management decisions about buildings.
