From the mid-1950s through the 1960s, Hungarian composer Gyoergy
Ligeti went through a remarkable period of stylistic transition,
from the emulation of his fellow countryman Bela Bartok to his own
individual style at the forefront of the Western-European
avant-garde. Through careful study of the sketches and drafts, as
well as analysis of the finished scores, Metamorphosis in Music
takes a detailed look at this compositional evolution. Author
Benjamin R. Levy includes sketch studies created through
transcriptions and reproductions of archival material-much of which
has never before been published-providing new, detailed information
about Ligeti's creative process and compositional methods. The book
examines all of Ligeti's compositions from 1956 to 1970, analyzing
little-known and unpublished works in addition to recognized
masterpieces such as Atmospheres, Aventures, the Requieim, and the
Chamber Concerto. Discoveries from Ligeti's sketches, prose, and
finished scores lead to an enriched appreciation of these already
multifaceted works. Throughout the book, Levy interweaves sketch
study with comments from interviews, counterbalancing the
composer's own carefully crafted public narrative about his work,
and revealing lingering attachments to older forms and insights
into the creative process. Metamorphosis in Music is an essential
treatment of a central figure of the musical midcentury, who found
his place in a generation straddling the divide between the modern
and post-modern eras.
This volume addresses virtual reality (VR) -- a tantalizing
communication medium whose essence challenges our most deeply held
notions of what communication is or can be. The editors have
gathered an expert team of engineers, social scientists, and
cultural theorists for the first extensive treatment of human
communication in this exciting medium.
The first part introduces the reader to VR's state-of-the-art as
well as future trends. In the next section, leading research
scientists discuss how knowledge of communication can be used to
build more effective and exciting communication applications of
virtual reality. Looking ahead, the authors explore pioneering
approaches to VR narratives, interpersonal communication, the use
of 3D sound, and the building of VR entertainment complexes. In the
final section, the authors zoom out to view the big picture -- the
psychological, social, and cultural implications of virtual
reality. Thought-provoking discussions consider important
communication issues such as:
* How will virtual reality influence perception of reality?
* What are the legal issues defining communication in virtual
reality?
* What kind of cultural trends will this technology
encourage?
The papers making up this volume represent a summary of the
proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Amorphous
Magnetism held at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on August 25-
27, 1976. As a result of the resounding success of the Inter
national Symposium on Amorphous Magnetism held at Wayne State
University on August 17 and 18, 1972 this symposium was again
organized with the purpose in mind of providing a forum for dis
cussion of the most recent theoretical and experimental advances
made in the fields of spin glass systems, amorphous magnetic alloys
and magnetic oxide glasses. The symposium was sponsored by the
American Physical Society and supported by a grant from GTE
Laboratories. Additional support funds were provided by General
Electric, Allied Chemical and Ford Motor Company. The program
committee consisted of J. J. Becker (General Electric), P. A.
Casabella (RPI), P. J. Cote (Watervliet Arsenal), A. M. de Graaf
(Wayne State University), R. Hasegawa, Co-Chairman (Allied
Chemical), H. O. Hooper (University of Maine), H. B. Huntington
(RPI), R. A. Levy, Chairman (RPI), R. K. MacCrone (RPI), L. N.
Mulay (Penn State University), G. L. Salinger (RPI) and J. Wong
(General Electric). The program of the symposium included 7 invited
review papers, 53 contributed papers, and 10 additional papers read
by title because of time limitations. The editors wish to extend
their deep appreciation to J. J. Becker, A. M. de Graaf, P. Duwez,
J. Gustafson, D. L. Huber, U."
This edited volume captures an exciting new trend in research on
intergroup attitudes and relations, which concerns how individuals
make judgments, and interact with individuals from different group
categories, broadly defined in terms of gender, race, age, culture,
religion, sexual orientation, and body type. This new approach is
an integrative perspective, one which draws on theory and research
in the areas of developmental and social psychology.
Throughout human history, intergroup conflict has often served as
the basis for societal conflict, strife, and tension. Over the past
several decades, individual and group mobility has enabled
individuals to interact with a wider range of people from different
backgrounds than ever before. On the one hand, this level of
societal heterogeneity contributes to intergroup conflict. On the
other hand, the experience of such heterogeneity has also reduced
stereotypes, and increased an understanding of others' perspectives
and experiences. Where does it begin? When do children acquire
stereotypes about the other? What are the sources of influence, and
how does change come about?
To provide a deeper understanding of the origins, stability, and
reduction of intergroup conflict, scholars in this volume report on
current, cutting edge theory and new research findings. Progress in
the area of intergroup attitudes relies on continued advances in
both the understanding of the origins and the trajectory of
intergroup conflict and harmony (as historically studied by
developmental psychologists) and the understanding of contexts and
conditions that contribute to positive and negative intergroup
attitudes and relations (as historically studied bysocial
psychologists). Recent social and developmental psychology research
clarifies the multifaceted nature of prejudice and the need for an
interdisciplinary approach to addressing prejudice. The recent
blossoming of research on the integration of developmental and
social psychology represented in this volume will appeal to
scholars and students in the areas of developmental psychology,
social psychology, cognitive psychology, education, social
neuroscience, law, business, and political science.

Udo Rein (b. 1960) is a video artist and painter and lives in
Munich. In his work he examines social and cultural contrasts
worldwide. His pictorial language starts out from documentary film
sequences and builds on fractal constructions and deconstructions
which he translates into collages of film stills and oil and
acrylic paints on wood panels. Our society frequently presents us
with polished surfaces and clear structures. These serve as the
starting point for Udo Rein, whose pictorial compositions then lead
us deep into the back streets and abysses of our worldviews.
Looking beneath the veneer opens up perspectives in a multi-faceted
but also contradictory world which is both erotic and mysterious.
The lavishly illustrated volume is the first comprehensive
monograph on the artist’s impressive oeuvre.

Present Air Force space doctrine and organizational structures are
based on extrapolation of air power concepts. This has resulted in
certain problems such as complaints of lack of warfighter support,
unresponsive launch systems, and confusion over roles and missions
like ballistic missile defense. The space community is also highly
fragmented. Numerous agencies have been created recently to address
some of these concerns, but these groups may just be adding to the
lack of concentration of effort. Meanwhile, trends continue
including the increased density and proliferation of commercial
space assets through microminiaturization, reduced launch costs,
and economies of scale, plus an increased dependency of US military
forces on information from space-based force enhancement systems.
This paper critiques present space doctrine and organization, looks
at some trends and technologies as indicated in the Spacecast 2020
and New World Vistas studies, and recommends doctrinal and
organizational changes for more responsive space operations.
