Alan G. Michette, Graeme R. Morrison, Christopher J. Buckley
R3,072 Discovery Miles 30 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The growth of interest and research activity in X -ray microscopy is reflected in the increasing size and scope of a related series of international conferences, the latest of which (XRM90) was held at King's College London (3-7 September 1990) with over 130 delegates. Previous conferences in Gottingen and Brookhaven resulted in books in the Springer Series in Optical Sciences, and this volume, the proceedings of XRM90, maintains this tradition. Because of the large number of papers their lengths were strictly limited and, while most papers can be directly identified with conference presentations, in a few cases those on similar topics by the same authors have been combined into a longer paper to allow better use of the space. The book is divided into six parts, with Parts IT-VI covering the major areas of interest at the conference. In Part 1 are two overviews; Ron Burge presented the opening paper of the conference, while the closing, summary, contrlbution by Janos Kirz is included here as a comprehensive introduction to the remainder of the book. Part IT covers developments in X -ray sources and optics. The high average brightnesses of synchrotron radiation sources have made many applications pos sible, while the more convenient, laboratory-based, plasma sources offer much promise for the future. Several contributions report significant advances in X-ray optics, which must clearly continue fully to exploit the latest sources.

Romanticism and Blackwood's Magazine - 'An Unprecedented Phenomenon' (Hardcover): R. Morrison, D Roberts Romanticism and Blackwood's Magazine - 'An Unprecedented Phenomenon' (Hardcover)
R. Morrison, D Roberts
R2,529 Discovery Miles 25 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Romanticism and Blackwood's Magazine is inspired by the ongoing critical fascination with Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, and the burgeoning recognition of its centrality to the Romantic age. Though the magazine itself was published continuously for well over a century and a half, this volume concentrates specifically on those years when William Blackwood was at the helm, beginning with his founding of the magazine in 1817 and closing with his death in 1834. These were the years when, as Samuel Taylor Coleridge put it in 1832, Blackwood's reigned as "an unprecedented Phenomenon in the world of letters." The magazine placed itself at the centre of the emerging mass media, commented decisively on all the major political and cultural issues that shaped the Romantic movement, and published some of the leading writers of the day, including Coleridge, Thomas De Quincey, John Galt, Felicia Hemans, James Hogg, Walter Scott, and Mary Shelley.

Digital Circuit Boards - Mach 1 GHz (Hardcover): R. Morrison Digital Circuit Boards - Mach 1 GHz (Hardcover)
R. Morrison
R2,260 Discovery Miles 22 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A unique, practical approach to the design of high-speed digital circuit boards

The demand for ever-faster digital circuit designs is beginning to render the circuit theory used by engineers ineffective. "Digital Circuit Boards" presents an alternative to the circuit theory approach, emphasizing energy flow rather than just signal interconnection to explain logic circuit behavior.

The book shows how treating design in terms of transmission lines will ensure that the logic will function, addressing both storage and movement of electrical energy on these lines. It covers transmission lines in all forms to illustrate how trace geometry defines where the signals can travel, then goes on to examine transmission lines as energy sources, the true nature of decoupling, types of resonances, ground bounce, cross talk, and more.

Providing designers with the tools they need to lay out digital circuit boards for fast logic and to get designs working the first time around, "Digital Circuit Boards"

Reviews in simple terms the basic physics necessary to understand fast logic design

Debunks the idea that electrical conductors carry power and signals, showing that signal travels in the spaces, not the traces, of circuit boards

Explains logic circuit behavior through real-time analysis involving the fields and waves that carry signal and energy

Provides new information on how ground/power planes work

Outlines a software program for solving energy flow in complex networks

The Fields of Electronics - Understanding Electronics Using Basic Physics (Hardcover): R. Morrison The Fields of Electronics - Understanding Electronics Using Basic Physics (Hardcover)
R. Morrison
R2,874 Discovery Miles 28 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A practical new approach that brings together circuit theory and field theory for the practicing engineer

To put it frankly, the traditional education of most engineers and scientists leaves them often unprepared to handle many of the practical problems they encounter. The Fields of Electronics: Understanding Electronics Using Basic Physics offers a highly original correction to this state of affairs.

Most engineers learn circuit theory and field theory separately. Electromagnetic field theory is an important part of basic physics, but because it is a very mathematical subject, the connection to everyday problems is not emphasized. Circuit theory, on the other hand, is by its nature very practical. However, circuit theory cannot describe the nature of a facility, the interconnection of many pieces of hardware, or the power grid that interfaces each piece of hardware.

The Fields of Electronics offers a unique approach that brings the physics and the circuit theory together into a seamless whole for today’s practicing engineers. With a clear focus on the real-world problems confronting the practitioner in the field, the book thoroughly details the principles that apply to:

  • Capacitors, inductors, resistors, and transformers
  • Utility power and circuit concepts
  • Grounding and shielding
  • Radiation
  • Analog and digital signals
  • Facilities and sites

Written with very little mathematics, and requiring only some background in electronics, this book provides an eminently useful new way to understand the subject of electronics that will simplify the work of every novice, experienced engineer, and scientist.

Beyond Urban Bias in Africa - Urbanization in an Era of Structural Adjustment (Paperback): Charles M. Becker, Andrew M. Hamer,... Beyond Urban Bias in Africa - Urbanization in an Era of Structural Adjustment (Paperback)
Charles M. Becker, Andrew M. Hamer, Andrew R. Morrison
R740 Discovery Miles 7 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This text focuses on whether African development has historically been weighted in favour of the urban areas. While the authors come out clearly against urban bias, one of their main worries is that the benefits, and the necessity, of urban development are being lost in adjustment approaches. What is necessary, they suggest, is to harnessthe financial and human resources of the human city as part of a strategy to ensure greater and more widespread economic development. This book provides many important - and controversial - conclusions and recommendations. North America: Heinemann

R. Morrison
R3,626 Discovery Miles 36 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A fresh look at electronics in the real world of Electromagnetic interference, the physical environment, and utility power . . .
Despite the many advances in electronics, the semiconductor revolution, and technologies that perform well above 100 MHz--problems of noise and interference remain. One reason is the inability of circuit theory to address a number of real-world issues--utility power, grounding, the character of buildings, the nature of long cables, or questions of radiation vis-a-vis equipment.
Solving Interference Problems in Electronics tackles all these areas with an amazingly accessible and down-to-earth approach that bridges the gap between the practical world and today's electronics. Highly original and pragmatic, the book uses elementary principles of physics to shed new light on EMI, and shows students and engineering professionals how to solve problems that are often beyond the scope of circuit theory.
Drawing on his 30 years experience in the field, author Ralph Morrison:
* Defines EMI broadly to accommodate utility power and the physical environment.
* Puts questions of grounding and shielding in a completely new light.
* Uses very simple mathematics that make it easy to understand what is happening and why.
* Shows how interference is generated and how it impacts design.
* Describes instrumentation design and specifications, including the nature of feedback and commonly encountered problems.
* Provides methods and techniques for testing and evaluating designs.
* Deals with questions of radiation and its correlation to equipment.
* Covers interference questions in computer manufacturing and systems design.
* Provides many illustrations that clarify difficult material and explain complex processes.

Fast Circuit Boards - Energy Management (Hardcover): R. Morrison Fast Circuit Boards - Energy Management (Hardcover)
R. Morrison
R2,866 Discovery Miles 28 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An essential guide to modern circuit board design based on simple physics and practical applications The fundamentals taught in circuit theory were never intended to work above a few megahertz, let alone at a gigahertz. While electronics is grounded in physics, most engineers' education in this area is too general and mathematical to be easily applied to the problem of high speed circuits. Left to their own devices, many engineers produce layouts that require expensive revisions in order to finally meet specifications. Fast Circuit Boards fills the gap in knowledge by providing clear, down-to-earth guidance on designing digital circuit boards that function at high clock rates. By making the direct connection between physics and fast circuits, this book instills the fundamental universal principles of information transfer to give engineers a solid basis for hardware design. Using simple tools, simple physics, and simple language, this invaluable resource walks through basic electrostatics, magnetics, wave mechanics, and more to bring the right technology down to the working level. Designed to be directly relevant and immediately useful to circuit board designers, this book: Properly explains the problems of fast logic and the appropriate tools Applies basic principles of physics to the art of laying out circuit boards Simplifies essential concepts scaled up to the gigahertz level, saving time, money, and the need for revisions Goes beyond circuit theory to provide a deep, intuitive understanding of the mechanisms at work Demonstrates energy management's role in board design through step function-focused transmission line techniques Engineers and technicians seeking a more systematic approach to board design and a deeper understanding of the fundamental principles at work will find tremendous value in this highly practical, long-awaited text.
