This book refocuses thinking on how multinational enterprises (MNEs) can achieve a sustained contribution to European transition economies as these countries move from the processes of transformation into pursuit of more sustained development. The authors apply key aspects of recent work on the strategic aims and nature of the contemporary MNE to the transition economy context, and find that the generation and application of technology has particular relevance to the success of MNEs in Central and Eastern Europe. The book is based on the results of two new wide-ranging surveys and includes a thorough review of current literature.
Multinationals, China and the Global Economy analyses the results
of an in-depth survey of subsidiaries in China of leading
manufacturing multinational enterprises (MNEs). It investigates the
strategic roles played by these subsidiaries and the sources of
technologies they access or generate in doing this. It provides an
original contribution to the understanding of important issues in
international business, the economic development of China and
economics.
In international business this study extends our knowledge of MNEs'
global strategies through detailed analysis of the precise roles
they expect their subsidiaries in China to play. A central theme of
this is how these roles relate to the development of the Chinese
economy and help its positioning in the global economy. Using the
results of their survey, the authors analyse how MNEs are operating
within the reorientation of Chinese development from low-cost
exporting to an innovation-oriented and knowledge-driven economy. A
very distinctive response to the growing Chinese market, and its
changing patterns of consumer demand, emerges as a crucial factor
at the core of this.
In recent years many multinational enterprises have increased the
amount of their R and D performed in dispersed locations overseas.
In some cases this aims to provide improved products and processes
for host countries and in others to establish internationally
integrated programmes of more basic work taping into geographically
dispersed sources of scientific expertise. The detailed survey and
interview results reported in this volume provide the basis for a
detailed discussion of issues relating to both parent company
perspectives on such dispersed R and D, and the viewpoints of the
overseas "subsidiary" laboratories performing such work. The issues
covered include, the nature of the work done in overseas
facilities; the specialization of roles in geological R and D;
co-ordination practices; sources of ideas implemented in R and D
programmes; sources of funding in overseas R and D; attitudes to
government policies. Another key concern of the book is to analyse
the consequences of the spread of R and D by MNES for the various
countries in which they operate.
The chapters in this book provide detailed analyses of a range of
issues that feed into an overview of the strategic development of
the MNE over the past 40 years. This modeled as the evolution of
the MNE from a multidomestic hierarchy to a network hierarchy to
the contemporary strategic diversity of the heterarchy. The
extensive range of empirical and conceptual analysis covers the
strategic roles and competitive evolution of subsidiaries; the
positioning of R&D labs of MNEs; how MNEs' R&D and product
development programmes relate to, and affect the performance of,
countries' national systems of innovation; the ways in which
dispersed subsidiaries and labs now work to support both the
effective use of current competitive technologies and the
generation of new sources of competitiveness for global firms. An
underlying theme of the book, that is also developed conceptually,
is how the global operations of MNEs involve selective involvement
with national economies and the implications of this for
globalization and economic development.
Offering a deep insight into the venture capital deal-making
process, "Raising Venture Capital" also provides valuable
introduction to the subject. The book is practical in focus but
based on sound academic theory, research and teaching materials
gathered over the last 4 years at Tanaka Business School.
Part one covers the history of the venture capital industry,
shows why entrepreneurs need venture capital finance, and looks at
how venture capitals raise and structure their funds. It also
covers valuation methods for venture capital investments, and
portfolio management.
Part two illustrates how successful entrepreneurs raise finance
from venture capitals, and gives details on how to approach venture
capitals, how to choose the right venture capital firm, and how
venture capitals and entrepreneurs work together after the deal is
done.
Part three gives a blow-by-blow account of the structure of a
venture capital deal.
The pressing of sheet metal into useful shapes is a technology
which requires an understanding of a wide range of subjects. This
text is divided into three sections: processes, materials and
tests. In Part 1, sheet metal forming is examined mainly from a
mechanical engineering viewpoint; firstly plasticity and
anisotropy, then process variables - friction, lubrication and
temperature - and finally practical aspects of forming in the
press-shop. Part 2 deals with the main sheet alloys at varying
lengths, depending on their industrial popularity. Certain research
results, showing the fallibility of the phenomenological approach,
are also highlighted. A section of testing procedures concludes the
volume.
The Logical Foundations of Social Theory describes Gert Mueller's
argument that physical, biological, social, moral, and cultural
reality form an asymmetrical hierarchy of founding and controlling
relationships that condition social reality rather than
mechanically determining it. This book analyzes social
stratification as labor, wealth and power, the moral order as
solidarity, ideology and morality, and culture systems as art,
science, and religion.
This volume provides a critical response to the COVID-19 pandemic
showcasing the full range of issues and perspectives that the
discipline of geography can expose and bring to the table, not only
to this specific event, but to others like it that might occur in
future. Comprised of almost 60 short (2500 word) easy to read
chapters, the collection provides numerous theoretical, empirical
and methodological entry points to understanding the ways in which
space, place and other geographical phenomenon are implicated in
the crisis. Although falling under a health geography book series,
the book explores the centrality and importance of a full range of
biological, material, social, cultural, economic, urban, rural and
other geographies. Hence the book bridges fields of study and
sub-disciplines that are often regarded as separate worlds,
demonstrating the potential for future collaboration and
cross-disciplinary inquiry. Indeed book articulates a diverse but
ultimately fulsome and multiscalar geographical approach to the
major health challenge of our time, bringing different types of
scholarship together with common purpose. The intended audience
ranges from senior undergraduate students and graduate students to
professional academics in geography and a host of related
disciplines. These scholars might be interested in COVID-19
specifically or in the book's broad disciplinary approach to
infectious disease more generally. The book will also be helpful to
policy-makers at various levels in formulating responses, and to
general readers interested in learning about the COVID-19 crisis.
Though it's widely understood that inward foreign direct investment
has played a major role in mediating China's emergence into the
international economic system, how and why MNEs have implemented
their involvement as part of their global strategy is less well
understood. This book explores the nature of the MNE in this era of
globalization.

The second edition of Sustainable Buildings and Infrastructure
continues to provide students with an introduction to the
principles and practices of sustainability as they apply to the
construction sector, including both buildings and infrastructure

designed to be a useful reference for practitioners involved in
implementing sustainability in their projects or firms. Case
studies, best practices and highlights of cutting edge research are
included throughout, making the book both a core reference and a
