While expert systems technology originated in the United States, its development has become an international concern. Since the start of the DENDRAL project at Stanford University over 15 years ago, with its objective of problem-solving via the automation of actual human expert knowledge, significant expert systems projects have been completed in countries rang ing from Japan to France, Spain to China. This book presents a sample of five such projects, along with four substantial reports of mature studies from North American researchers. Two important issues of expert system design permeate the papers in this volume. The first concerns the incorporation of substantial numeric knowledge into a system. This has become a significant focus of work as researchers have sought to apply expert systems tech nology to complex, real-world domains already subject to statistical or algebraic description (and handled well at some level in numeric terms). A second prominent issue is that of representing control knowledge in a manner which is both explicit, and thus available for inspection, and compatible with the semantics of the problem domain."

Point counts of buds are the most widely used quantitative method and involve an observer recording buds from a single point for a standardized time period. In response to the need for standardization of methods to monitor bird populations by census, various investigators met in Maryland in late fall 1991 to evaluate point counts. Their objectives were to present data from various investigations working under a wide variety of conditions, and to examine various aspects of point count methodology. This volume contains the papers given at the workshop, as well as a few additional relevant papers that subsequently have been submitted to the technical coordinators. Statistical aspects of sampling and analysis were discussed and applied to the objectives of point counts. From this base, at interactive sessions the participants discussed and agreed upon standards of point counts that should have wide applicability to a variety of habitats and terrain. The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore the effects of new district mathematics curriculum on Nebraska State Accountability-Mathematics (NeSA-M) student cohort scores from 2011 to 2012. This study was significant in isolating variables individual school districts may control in order to do their part in changing the current condition in the United States regarding mathematics learning. The district mathematics curriculum implemented in the fall of 2011 not only contained increases in both content and rigor but also requirements for the learning of content-specific vocabulary, for the learning of literacy strategies to aide mathematical problem solving, and for explaining critical thinking and problem-solving processes in writing. Last, this study was important in that fiscal responsibility and ethics necessitated analysis of spending as the research district spent nearly $2.5 million in developing and implementing the new district mathematics curriculum. Whereas this seminal study indicates statistically significant effects upon student performance on the NeSA-M after implementing district mathematics curriculum, it also implies a need for more research.
