Saunders analyzes the ideological uses of loss in literary,
philosophical, and social texts from the late 19th and 20th
centuries through the lens of women's lament traditions and
includes philosophical texts by Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Derrida;
and literary works by William Faulkner, Stephane Mallarme, Dimitris
Hatzis, and Tahar Ben Jelloun.
First published in 1984. Routledge is an imprint of Taylor &
Francis, an informa company.
The volume analyzes local changes in Christianity in eight
different cultures--in the Pacific, Jamaica, California, and Italy.
The contributors are particularly effective in linking local
religious and kinship systems to supralocal changes in Christian
denominations, and in analyzing the motivations behind conversions,
resistance, and disenchantment. Each essay includes a map,
historical background, and a concise ethnographic case. The
emphasis is on local interpretations rather than mission histories
or theological variation, and the breadth of the cases makes the
volume a very useful source for understanding contemporary
religious change. A well-written and well-produced volume. Choice
As Christianity has gradually spread to all parts of the world,
Christian symbology, meaning, and dogma have been adapted in unique
ways to each new ethnic, tribal, and national culture encountered.
This volume of essays looks at that process of adaptation--at how
Christianity transforms culture and is transformed by it. One of
the first comparative studies in an area of growing interest to
anthropologists, the collection offers empirical ethnographic case
studies of Christian movements and communities in Melanesia,
Micronesia, Korea, Jamaica, Italy, and the United States and
explores some new theoretical perspectives on the processes of
cultural change.

Women of the Bible is a study of the 18 prominent women whose
stories appear in the Bible. Each lesson is in two parts,
presenting how we are introduced to the woman and her how we see
her later in life. Each lesson outline includes: just imagine (life
in that time), read about (the woman), clarifications, exploring
questions, the rest of the story, application, "what's in it for
me?" our response to God, and suggested scriptures for further
study. The student is encouraged to apply principles from those
lives to her own life, with the final chapter zeroing in on the
student's life story. Women of the Bible was written in response to
requests from a ladies' Bible study group led by Darlene Saunders.
Darlene has also written Life Lessons for Caregivers, Psalms for
Caregivers (a devotional), To India With Love (a missionary
biography), and Pinky (junior novelette). These are available
through Amazon or dsaundersbooks.com.

Sorcery. Sensuality. These and many more elements of fantasy await
you in the pages of Griots, which brings you the latest stories of
the new genre called Sword and Soul. The tales told in Griots are
the annals of the Africa that was, as well as Africas that never
were, may have been, or should have been. They are the legends of a
continent and people emerging from shadows thrust upon them in the
past. They are the sagas sung by the modern heirs of the African
story-tellers known by many names - including griots. Here, you
will meet mighty warriors, seductive sorceresses, ambitious
monarchs, and cunning courtesans. Here, you will journey through
the vast variety of settings Africa offers, and inspires. Here, you
will savor what the writings of the modern-day griots have to
offer: journeys through limitless vistas of the imagination, with a
touch of color and a taste of soul.
