In this text, first published in 1994, the author examines the
interdisciplinary significance of the theory of science, literature
and philosophy according to the figures who achieved prominence in
those fields - Kuhn, Bloom and Derrida. Each scholar's theory is
discussed in terms of its major concepts, and the book then relates
their fields within the context of deconstruction's
interdisciplinary movement. This title will be of interest to
students of literature and philosophy.

Witch-hunts were by no means focused only on women -- one in four
alleged witches in Central Europe was male. This study traces the
witch trials of men in French and German speaking regions in
Central Europe, opening up a little known chapter of early modern
times. The author analyzes the proportion of accused men in the
witch-hunts, describes their trials and explores the conflicts from
which witch-hunts involving men evolved.
The White Rose tells the story of Hans Scholl and Sophie Scholl,
who in 1942 led a small underground organization of German students
and professors to oppose the atrocities committed by Hitler and the
Nazi Party. They named their group the White Rose, and they
distributed leaflets denouncing the Nazi regime. Sophie, Hans, and
a third student were caught and executed.
Written by Inge Scholl (Han's and Sophie's sister), The White Rose
features letters, diary excerpts, photographs of Hans and Sophie,
transcriptions of the leaflets, and accounts of the trial and
execution. This is a gripping account of courage and morality.

"Why me God? Why not me? I noticed a swelling on my lower left
leg on the calf muscle in late December 2009. There was no pain at
all, so I dismissed it as a swelling from a hard fall I had taken
in my basement about a month earlier. I showed it to Cindy who
wanted me to go to the doctor's, but if you haven't noticed I am
thick headed and wanted to see if it would just go away..it didn't.
The doctor's visit and subsequent MRI in February began the process
of identifying just what this thing was. Treatment could only begin
after a positive ID. At this point I was not overly concerned. I
still believed it to be a hematoma from the fall. It turned out to
be much, much more." This is the first entry into a 2-year
CaringBridge journal for my husband Bob who was 63 at the time and
a very virile and active man. The hematoma turned out to be a rare
and aggressive cancer that would take his life just 2 years later.
The journal documents the tremendous faith and strength that he
received from Christ every step of the way. The journal will carry
you through the innermost thoughts of a man who knows that there is
a possibility that he will not live through this, but turns to God
and sees the joy of life in adversity. I rode the journey with him
for 2 years and realized that through Jesus, Bob was able to not
only live well but also to die well. His journal will put you front
and center on his beautiful journey, something he called "an
e-ticket ride with Christ." We were all blessed to be a part of his
journey and I hope, that after reading this, you will feel blessed
too.
"He took my fear and turned it into wonder" "The mysteries of
the ages will be mine soon. Are you jealous" "Open our eyes to the
reality of the moments we live in."

Why do people at certain historical moments choose to define
themselves in terms of their ethnicity? What concrete concerns are
embedded in such identification? What does the creation of this
identity mean in the larger context of history and social
relationships? These are some of the questions April R. Schultz
addresses in this interdisciplinary study of the way in which
ethnic identity has been shaped and expressed in American culture.
Drawing on the work of historians, anthropologists, literary
critics, and cultural theorists, Schultz analyzes one national
celebration - the 1925 Norwegian-American Immigration Centennial -
as a strategic site for the invention of ethnicity. She shows how
Norwegian Americans used this ceremony to create a distinctive
vision of their past and present - a social and cultural
construction that both accommodated and resisted dominant
Anglo-American conceptions of assimilation. By taking a close look
at the experiences of a white, middle-class, Protestant ethnic
community, this book challenges many assumptions about the
Americanization of immigrant groups and offers new insight into the
uses of historical memory.
In "The Romance of Small-Town Chautauquas," James Schultz offers
a unique pictorial study of a cultural movement that started in
1904 and spread across the country. For almost thirty years, tent
shows known as "chautauquas" brought popular education and
entertainment to small towns in America from coast to coast. With
more than one hundred photographs and other illustrations from the
era, the book presents a captivating overview of the tent
chautauqua movement from its inception to its demise in 1932.
These traveling chautauquas--which were an outgrowth of the
lyceum movement--evolved in the early part of the twentieth
century. Keith Vawter, owner of the Chicago branch of the Redpath
Lyceum, came up with an idea that would bring to rural America the
same quality of lectures and other forms of entertainment that were
available through the lyceum. His concept was a circuit of
traveling tents that moved from town to town. Vawter named his
traveling circuits "chautauquas," modeling them after the
Chautauqua Institution in southwestern New York State, an
intellectual community with summerlong programs of lectures,
seminars, and workshops. Tent chautauquas offered a variety of
cultural events by politicians, writers, and theologians, filling a
void in the lives of rural residents who did not have access to the
array of talent available to city dwellers.
"The Romance of Small-Town Chautauquas" contains many previously
unpublished photographs that reflect the styles and customs of a
bygone era, as well as photos and anecdotes about many people of
prominence who toured as speakers or entertainers. These included
individuals such as President Warren G. Harding, Congresswoman
Jeannette Rankin, ventriloquist Edgar Bergen, journalist and
historian Ida Tarbell, poet Carl Sandburg, and many others.
Schultz utilizes the existing literature on chautauquas, but he
contributes much new information from the files of his father and
uncle, both of whom were involved in the management of the Redpath
Chautauquas, as well as interviews he conducted with individuals
who remember attending chautauqua performances. Celebrating a
fascinating chapter of America's cultural history, "The Romance of
Small-Town Chautauquas" will appeal to students of American history
and chroniclers of the entertainment industry.
