This collection of 33 papers represents the most current thinking
and research on the study of cognitive processing in bilingual
individuals. The contributors include well-known figures in the
field and promising new scholars, representing four continents and
work in dozens of languages. Instead of the social, political, or
educational implications of bilingualism, the focus is on how
bilingual people (mostly adults) think and process language.
Pindi Singh MP suffers from a form of Tourette's syndrome in which
he is plagued by highy random inner voices that uncontrolably break
through when he is speaking. He befriends Ali and Rana (a brother
and sister) whom he recruits as helpers in a forthcoming General
Election. Ali, however, is kidnapped by people whose sole intention
is to remove democracy from the political life of the country and
to simultaneously eradicate the entire British Establishment.
This story is a bizarre adventure in neuroscience. It describes a
small group of scientists and friends working in Oxford who,
because of an accident, are forced to embrace the principle of
self-experimentation. The consequences of their actions are not
only unforeseen but quite unprecedented in the world of biological
science - especially when they digitalise the entire conscious
personality of Sydney Blumenthal, a leading member of the group. As
the story unfolds it tries - I hope in an entertaining way - to
explore the tantalising cross-over between computer science,
genetics and medical science, together with some of the strange,
legal and ethical ramifications this cross-over creates. It is this
potent, fertile mixture of disciplines which, in many ways, is
already defining the future of medicine. However, I have no doubt
that the medical wonders which will in fact come to define the
future, will far outstrip the imaginative scope of this story.
This is a tale of healing through intention, guidance and trust.
Never knowing, just knowing. Follow Gracia on her journey and one
finds something that amuses, teaches, heals. This is a story about
transformation that many will relate to or be inspired by.
