Software for Engineering Control of Landslide and Tunnelling Hazards (Hardcover): Bhawani Singh, R.K. Goel Software for Engineering Control of Landslide and Tunnelling Hazards (Hardcover)
Bhawani Singh, R.K. Goel
R5,052 R4,164 Discovery Miles 41 640 Save R888 (18%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book offers solutions to problems of hazard control of landslides in the highly seismic hilly areas and of tunnels in the complex geological formations. It is complementary to authors' book on Rock Mass Classification. Chapters on practical knowledge of both landslide and tunnelling hazards and behaviour of rock joints and rock masses are presented for preparation of realistic input data. This data is easy to prepare. The emphasis is on proper design of remedial measures and not on rigorous analysis. There are 18 practical and field-tested software packages on landslide in soil and rock (Part A) and 6 packages on tunnels (Part B) along with source programs, user manuals and solved examples. The computer programs on back analysis of rock/soil slopes are useful to analyse shear strength parameters along potential failure surfaces. A special feature of these programs/codes is approximate estimation of the dynamic settlement of slopes during earthquake. The computer programs on tunnels/shafts are equally simple to use for on-spot-design of supports with shotcrete/SFRS and rock bolts. Program on squeezing deals with most challenging problem of tunnelling in weak rocks. The chapter on subsidence due to coal mines is based on extensive field research.

Engineering Rock Mass Classification - Tunnelling, Foundations and Landslides (Paperback): R.K. Goel, Bhawani Singh Engineering Rock Mass Classification - Tunnelling, Foundations and Landslides (Paperback)

R1,829 Discovery Miles 18 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Rock mass classification methods are commonly used at the preliminary design stages of a construction project when there is very little information. It forms the bases for design and estimation of the required amount and type of rock support and groundwater control measures. Encompassing nearly all aspects of rock mass classifications in detail, Civil Engineering Rock Mass Classification: Tunnelling, Foundations and Landsides provides construction engineers and managers with extensive practical knowledge which is time-tested in the projects in Himalaya and other parts of the world in complex geological conditions. Rock mass classification is an essential element of feasibility studies for any near surface construction project prior to any excavation or disturbances made to earth. Written by an author team with over 50 years of experience in some of the most difficult mining regions of the world, Civil Engineering Rock Mass Classification: Tunnelling, Foundations and Landsides provides construction engineers, construction managers and mining engineers with the tools and methods to gather geotechnical data, either from rock cuts, drifts or core, and process the information for subsequent analysis. The goal is to use effective mapping techniques to obtain data can be used as input for any of the established rock classification systems. The book covers all of the commonly used classification methods including: Barton's Q and Q' systems, Bieniawski's RMR, Laubscher's MRMR and Hoek's and GSI systems. With this book in hand, engineers will be able to gather geotechnical data, either from rock cuts, drifts or core, and process the information for subsequent analysis. Rich with international case studies and worked out equations, the focus of the book is on the practical gathering information for purposes of analysis and design.

Underground Infrastructures - Planning, Design, and Construction (Hardcover): R.K. Goel, Bhawani Singh, Jian Zhao Underground Infrastructures - Planning, Design, and Construction (Hardcover)
R.K. Goel, Bhawani Singh, Jian Zhao
R2,174 Discovery Miles 21 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Underground facilities, such as tunnels, sewer, water and gas networks form the backbone of the economic life of the modern city. In densely populated areas where the demands for transportation and services are rapidly increasing and the construction of new roads and railways are prohibited, the construction of a tunnel might be the only alternative. Brief and readable, this reference is based on a combined 75 years of field experience and places emphasis is on simple practical rules for designing and planning, underground infrastructures. The books begins with a clear and rigorous exposition of the classification of underground space, important considerations such as geological and engineering and underground planning. This is followed by self-contained chapters concerning applications for underground water storage, underground car parks, underground metros & road tunnels and underground storage of crude oil, lpg and natural gas. The book has 15 chapters covering various usage of underground space. There are about 135 figures and tables. The book contains about 20 case histories/examples.

One of the first book to address all of the major areas in which this technology is used, this book deals with major topics such as: hydroelectric projects with modern planning of complex underground structures; underground storages of food items, crude oil and explosives and highly cautious underground nuclear waste repositories. Rail and road tunnels and TBM are described briefly. Risk management in underground infrastructures is of vital importance. Civil Engineers, Mining Engineers, and Geotechnical Engineers will find this book a valuable guide to designing and planning underground infrastructures both in terms of its applications.

Risk management method for underground infrastructures

Vital tips for the underground storage of food, water, crude oil, natural gas and munitions

Provides design tips for Underground Parking Facilities

Instruction for the designing planning and construction for underground Metros and road tunnels

Planning and design of underground nuclear waste repositories

Clearly explains the benefits and drawbacks of underground facilities

Quick guide to the various modern mechanical underground parking options

Explanation of construction planning and Risk management

Places expert advice for planning and constructing projects at the finger tips"

Rock Mass Classification - A Practical Approach in Civil Engineering (Hardcover, 1st ed): B Singh, R.K. Goel Rock Mass Classification - A Practical Approach in Civil Engineering (Hardcover, 1st ed)
B Singh, R.K. Goel
R5,669 Discovery Miles 56 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Rock Mass Classifications - A Practical Approach in Civil Engineering" was written in response to the many unanswered questions regarding this subject. Questions such as - Is Classification reasonably reliable? Can it be successful in crisis management of geohazards? Can a single Classification system be general for all rock structures? Is Classification a scientific approach? Laborious field research was undertaken in the Himalayan mountains by a team of scientists from the Central Mining Research Institute (CMRI), University of Roorkee (UOR), Central Soil and Material Research Station (CSMRS), U.P. Irrigation Research Institute (UPIRI), and Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) to answer these questions. The results obtained from the research work were systematically compiled to produce this book which bears particular relevance to civil, mining and petroleum engineers and geologists.
