The Book of Durrow is among the earliest surviving decorated
manuscripts in north-western Europe, dating to the late seventh
century AD. A masterpiece of Celtic art, it is believed to be the
oldest fully decorated Insular Gospel that survives, pre-dating the
Book of Kells by more than a century. Created in a monastery
associated with the Irish saint Colum Cille (St Columba), its text
and artwork reflect the formative years of a `golden age' of
artistic production in Ireland and Britain. This richly decorated
introductory guide explores the manuscript's distinctive artwork
and tells the extraordinary story of its preservation in the Irish
monastery at Durrow - first as sacred text then as relic - and its
acquisition in the seventeenth century by the Library of Trinity
College Dublin.
This handbook aims to challenge 'gender blindness' in the
historical study of high politics, power, authority and government,
by bringing together a group of scholars at the forefront of
current historical research into the relationship between
masculinity and political power. Until very recently in historical
terms, formal political authority in Europe was normally and
ideally held by adult males, with female power being perceived as a
recurrent aberration. Yet paradoxically the study of the
interactions between masculinity and political culture is still
very much in its infancy. This volume seeks to remedy this lacuna
by considering the different consequences of the masculinity of
power over two millennia of European history. It examines how
masculinity and political culture have interacted from ancient Rome
and the early medieval Byzantine empire, to twentieth-century
Germany and Italy. It considers a broad variety of case studies
from early medieval Iceland and late medieval France, to Naples at
the time of the French Revolution and Strasbourg after the
Franco-Prussian War, with a particular focus on the development of
political masculinities in Great Britain between the sixteenth
century and the present day.
ART AND ARCHITECTURE OF IRELAND is an authoritative and fully

and Modernist churches, from tapestries and sculptures to oil
paintings, photographs and video art. This monumental project
provides new insights into every facet of the strength, depth and
variety of Ireland's artistic and architectural heritage. MEDIEVAL

This is a detailed study and typology of chevron ornamentation, the
zig-zag motifs which are omnipresent in Norman architecture of the
twelfth century, first appearing around 1090 and pretty much
disappearing by 1200. In creating such a typology Rachel Moss
addresses questions of the regional development and evolution of
the form and finds that a simple model of linear development cannot
entirely be substained.
