This book explores cross linguistic variation in nasalization.
This book explores cross-linguistic variation in nasalization spreading known as nasal harmony; it presents a survey of nasal harmony patterns in over 75 languages, and builds on the findings of this study to achieve a unified phonological understanding of the phenomenon. This book will be of interest to researchers in phonology, phonetics, morphology, and typology and universals, as well as scholars interested in Amazonian and Bantoid languages.
The Modern Spice Rack is an insightful guide to the most common
spices in our cupboards, and offers up how to best make use of them
in delicious recipes. Spices have, historically, been a tricky
ingredient. They’re prevalent in everyone’s kitchens, but too
often are underused, stored badly and kept years beyond their
‘best before date’. There’s the perceived alchemy of making a
curry from scratch and the stringent marrying of certain spices to
specific cuisines. This cookbook encourages liberal, creative and
everyday use – a well-timed pinch to elevate a dish, with a focus
on great taste rather than being tethered to tradition. Colourful
introductions give context to lesser-known spices and provide new
insights into more familiar varieties, and the global, taste-led
recipes will have readers cooking more confidently with spices.
Today’s culture can feel full of chaos. As believers, we may want
to act, to help make a positive change in the world, but where on
earth do we begin? This book invites you to start small, precisely
where you are. Whether you have been fighting for justice for a
long time or are only just awakening to the fact that something
needs to be done in your church, community or wider world, this
book provides a practical framework for turning your faith into
hopeful action. With a foreword from Ruth Valerio and contributions
from Ben Lindsay, Shane Claiborne, Krish Kandiah, Chine McDonald,
Andrew Graystone and many more, The Ordinary Activist combines
theological reflection and practical advice to help you identify
the unique contribution only you can make in bringing God’s
justice and restoration to the world around you.
Linguists researching the sounds of languages do not just study
lists of sounds but seek to discover generalizations about sound
patterns by grouping them into categories. They study the common
properties of each category and identify what distinguishes one
category from another. Vowel patterns, for instance, are analysed
and compared across languages to identify phonological similarities
and differences. This original account of vowel patterns in
language brings a wealth of cross-linguistic material to the study
of vowel systems and offers new theoretical insights. Informed by
research in speech perception and production, it addresses the
fundamental question of how the relative prominence of word
position influences vowel processes and distributions. The book
combines a cross-linguistic focus with detailed case studies.
Descriptions and analyses are provided for vowel patterns in over
25 languages from around the world, with particular emphasis on
minor Romance languages and on the diachronic development of the
German umlaut.
