Las variaciones espaciales pueden estudiarse a traves de tecnicas geoestadisticas que permiten elaborar mapas y delimitar areas de manejo homogeneo. Se ha estudiado la variabilidad de las propiedades fisicas, quimicas y biologicas del suelo que afectan la productividad de los cultivos, reportandose asociaciones entre estas y el rendimiento, aunque dichas asociaciones dependen del rango de variacion del parametro y del rango en que este afecta al rendimiento (Ortega y Flores, 1999). A pesar de la necesidad de mejorar la precision de los ensayos que se realizan en las estaciones experimentales, generalmente no se mapean los suelos con suficiente detalle, en procura de identificar los cambios marcados en sus atributos los cuales suelen presentarse aun en cortas distancias. Por el contrario, se ha preferido disminuir la incidencia de la variabilidad del suelo en los ensayos mediante el proceso de aleatorizacion en los disenos experimentales, es decir, se ha intentado neutralizar el efecto de la variabilidad, pero se ha avanzado poco en su estudio como un elemento del suelo mismo y de su relacion con los resultados experimentales (Beckett 1971).
