This book presents the current knowledge about nonlinear localized
travelling excitations in crystals. Excitations can be vibrational,
electronic, magnetic or of many other types, in many different
types of crystals, as silicates, semiconductors and metals. The
book is dedicated to the British scientist FM Russell, recently
turned 80. He found 50 years ago that a mineral mica muscovite was
able to record elementary charged particles and much later that
also some kind of localized excitations, he called them quodons,
was also recorded. The tracks, therefore, provide a striking
experimental evidence of quodons existence. The first chapter by
him presents the state of knowledge in this topic. It is followed
by about 18 chapters from world leaders in the field, reviewing
different aspects, materials and methods including experiments,
molecular dynamics and theory and also presenting the latest
results. The last part includes a personal narration of FM Russell
of the deciphering of the marks in mica. It provides a unique way
to present the science in an accessible way and also illustrates
the process of discovery in a scientist's mind.
This book argues that postwar Britain's "imperial over-extension" has been exaggerated. Britain developed and adjusted its defense strategy based upon the perceived Communist threat and available resources. It was especially successful at adapting to meet the strategic and resource challenges from the Far East from 1947-54. There British and Gurkha forces were deployed only in contingencies that threatened vital British interests, while the US and Commonwealth allies were persuaded to accept key wartime missions, thus preserving Britain's ability to fight in Western Europe.
Pollution of the environment with organic compounds, mostly due to
industrial ac- tivities, has become a major environmental issue.
The situation is getting worse due to the continued release of
large amounts of chemicals and the broadening of the spectrum of
xenobiotics that to which the biosphere is exposed to. The field of
biodegradation and bioremediation has experienced a dynamic and in-
tense period of development during the last few years, encompassing
all its different disci- plines: Isolation and characterization of
new microorganisms with novel catabolic activities, understanding
the specific enzymatic mechanisms underlying biodegradation,
rational design of genetically engineered degrading microorganisms,
and studying the in- teraction of the degrading organism with
biotic and abiotic components within the envi- ronment to allow
development of efficient bioremediation processes. nd This book,
devoted to the proceedings of the 42 OHOLO Conference on "Novel
Approaches for Bioremediation of Organic Pollution" which was held
in Eilat, Israel, in May 1998, obviously does not cover the full
range of bioremediation research. However, an attempt has been made
to address the major issues in bioremediation of organic pollu-
tion. The four sessions of the conference covered a wide spectrum
of topics, from the lab research-characterization of enzymes and
pathways, genetic design of degradative mi- croorganisms, to the
field application issues-bioaccessibility, bioavailability, process
de- velopment and field studies.
The purpose of NATO: From Regional to Global Security Provider is
to provide a comprehensive analysis of the Alliance's new vision
(the new Strategic Concept) and common security impact - associated
tasks to be undertaken within a short and longer term time horizon.
The book serves as a relevant and timely study of the most pressing
issues facing NATO today - including recent lessons gained. It
provides recommendations for consideration and further discussion
(i.e., the "what" and the "how" regarding future policy options for
the North Atlantic Alliance). The intended audience includes
international security policy-makers, government officials, elected
leaders, academics, interested professionals, civil society and
members of the public. Specifically, the book focuses on six topic
areas. Part I, the Introduction, relates to conceptual and
organizational changes, membership expansion and enlargement. Part
II consists of emerging security challenges, including terrorism,
piracy, homeland threats, cyber defense and information warfare,
energy security, non-proliferation and countering WMD. Part III
incorporates national and regional challenges such as the Balkans,
Iraq, Afghanistan/Pakistan, the Horn of Africa, North Africa and
the Middle East. Part IV deals with military and non-military
assets. It integrates capability development, burden sharing,
common funding, ballistic missile defenses and the phased adaptive
approach, non-strategic nuclear weapons, and a broad-based
comprehensive approach to security. Part V covers multifaceted
collaborative relationships between NATO and various governmental,
inter-governmental, and non-governmental bodies. This section
incorporates outreach and engagement with Russia, India, Pakistan,
and China, as well as with other non-NATO countries, the
Mediterranean Dialogue (MD), and the Istanbul Cooperation
Initiative (ICI). Formal and informal linkages with the EU, OSCE,
and the UN are also essential features of such a cooperative
activity. Additionally, the expanding participation of civil
society and growing involvement of new key NATO interlocutors
(e.g., NGOs, academics) have created new international partnering
opportunities as a means of bolstering global security through
innovative public-private partnerships. Part VI includes a Summary
and Conclusions.
Powerful accounts by genocide survivors, a journalist seeking to
bear witness to their pain. Darfuri refugee camps in Chad, Kigali
in Rwanda, and the ruins of ancient villages in Turkey - all
visited by genocide, all still reeling in its wake. In Journey
through Genocide, Raffy Boudjikanian travels to communities that
have survived genocide to understand the legacy of this most
terrible of crimes against humanity. In this era of ethnic and
religious wars, mass displacements, and forced migrations,
Boudjikanian looks back at three humanitarian crises. In Chad, meet
families displaced by massacres in the Darfur region of
neighbouring Sudan, their ordeal still raw. In Rwanda, meet a
people struggling with justice and reconciliation. And in Turkey,
explore what it means to still be afraid a century after the
author's own ancestors were caught in the Armenian Genocide of
1915. Clear-eyed and compassionate, Boudjikanian breathes life into
horrors that too often seem remote.
Raffi's signature song and the top seller in his Songs to Read series, Baby Beluga is now available in a quality board book edition perfect for his youngest fans.

Real analysis is difficult. For most students, in addition to
learning new material about real numbers, topology, and sequences,
they are also learning to read and write rigorous proofs for the
first time. The Real Analysis Lifesaver is an innovative guide that
helps students through their first real analysis course while
giving them the solid foundation they need for further study in
proof-based math. Rather than presenting polished proofs with no
explanation of how they were devised, The Real Analysis Lifesaver
takes a two-step approach, first showing students how to work
backwards to solve the crux of the problem, then showing them how
to write it up formally. It takes the time to provide plenty of
examples as well as guided "fill in the blanks" exercises to
solidify understanding. Newcomers to real analysis can feel like
they are drowning in new symbols, concepts, and an entirely new way
of thinking about math. Inspired by the popular Calculus Lifesaver,
this book is refreshingly straightforward and full of clear
explanations, pictures, and humor. It is the lifesaver that every
drowning student needs. * The essential "lifesaver" companion for
any course in real analysis* Clear, humorous, and easy-to-read
style* Teaches students not just what the proofs are, but how to do
them--in more than 40 worked-out examples* Every new definition is
accompanied by examples and important clarifications* Features more
than 20 "fill in the blanks" exercises to help internalize proof
techniques* Tried and tested in the classroom
Calling all people to become stewards of the earth, this exquisite
edition is a heartfelt plea for the planet's preservation. The
Declaration of Interdependence—both an enlightening creed and a
passionate call to action—was composed by David Suzuki and a team
of activists and environmentalists in 1992, in recognition of the
United Nations' Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. This compelling
statement of environmental principles progresses through three
stages: “This We Know,” “This We Believe,” and “This We
Resolve.” In this exquisitely designed edition, artist Michael
Nicoll Yahgulanaas brings this powerful creed to life using imagery
from cultures around the world, interpreted through his dynamic
Haida Manga style. The declaration is followed by an inspiring
essay by David Suzuki. An epilogue by Tara Cullis, president and
co-founder of the David Suzuki Foundation, reveals the history and
achievements of the foundation, one of North America's most active
and successful environmental organizations. Published in
partnership with the David Suzuki Foundation.
A classic silly song that toddlers know and love, Down by the Bay has been a favorite and best-selling Raffi Songs to Read/reg/ since it was first published in 1988. In this friendly board book edition, irresistible art by Nadine Bernard Westcott depicts wonderfully amusing creatures such as a bear combing his hair, a goose kissing a moose, and a whale with a polka-dot tail. Very young children will find this book both entertaining and instructive in early language skills such as rhyme, rhythm, and repetition, and will delight in hearing it read or sung aloud to them.
