This volume contains the papers selected for presentation at IPCO VII, the Seventh Conference on Integer Programming and Combinatorial Optimization, Graz, Austria, June9{11,1999.Thismeetingisaforumforresearchersandpr- titioners working on various aspects of integer programming and combinatorial optimization. The aim is to present recent developments in theory, compu- tion, and applications of integer programming and combinatorial optimization. Topics include, but are not limited to: approximation algorithms, branch and bound algorithms, computational biology, computational complexity, compu- tional geometry, cutting plane algorithms, diophantine equations, geometry of numbers, graph and network algorithms, integer programming, matroids and submodular functions, on-line algorithms, polyhedral combinatorics, scheduling theory and algorithms, and semide nite programs. IPCO was established in 1988 when the rst IPCO program committee was formed. IPCO I took place in Waterloo (Canada) in 1990, IPCO II was held in Pittsburgh (USA) in 1992, IPCO III in Erice (Italy) 1993, IPCO IV in Cop- hagen (Denmark) 1995, IPCO V in Vancouver (Canada) 1996, and IPCO VI in Houston (USA) 1998. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 5th Annual International European Symposium on Algorithms, ESA'97, held in Graz, Austria, September 1997.
The 38 revised full papers presented were selected from 112 submitted papers. The papers address a broad spectrum of theoretical and applicational aspects in algorithms theory and design. Among the topics covered are approximation algorithms, graph and network algorithms, combinatorial optimization, computational biology, computational mathematics, data compression, distributed computing, evolutionary algorithms, neural computing, online algorithms, parallel computing, pattern matching, and others.

Mathematische Optimierung spielt aufgrund der verbreiteten Anwendung des Verfahrens und seiner raschen wissenschaftlichen Entwicklung eine wichtige Rolle im Mathematikstudium. In dem Buch fuhren die Autoren in die Lineare und Konvexe Optimierung ein und vermitteln darauf aufbauend Fragen der Diskreten und Nichtlinearen Optimierung. Vorausgesetzt werden nur Grundkenntnisse der Linearen Algebra und Analysis. Alle Verfahren werden anhand von okonomischen Beispielen dargestellt, die einzelnen Schritte im Open-Source-Programm Scilab sind dokumentiert.

Optimierungsaufgaben spielen in Wirtschaft und Technik eine immer wichtigere Rolle. Dabei gewinnen Probleme, in denen gewisse Variable nur diskrete Werte annehmen koennen, zunehmend an Bedeutung. Fuhren doch Optimierungsaufgaben, in denen Stuckzahlen vorkommen oder in denen die Alternative wahr oder falsch auftritt, in naturlicher Weise auf ganzzahlige Optimierungsprobleme. Historisch gesehen waren es die Transport-und Zuordnungsprobleme, zu deren Loesung die ersten Verfahren entwickelt wurden. Diese Klasse von ganzzahligen linearen Programmen besitzt die wichtige Eigenschaft, dass sich bei Loesung des zugehoerigen gewoehnlichen linearen Programmes bei ganzzahligen Ausgangswerten von selbst eine ganzzahlige Loesung ergibt. Bei anderen Typen von ganzzahligen Optimierungsaufgaben ist dies nicht der Fall. Das erste effektive Loesungsverfahren fur allgemeine lineare ganz- zahlige Optimierungsprobleme geht auf Gomory (1958) zuruck. Seither wurden die verschiedensten Techniken angewendet, um solche Probleme moeglichst gut zu loesen. Dazu gehoeren Enumerationsverfahren, kombina- torische, geometrische und gruppentheoretische UEberlegungen wie auch die Anwendung der dynamischen Optimierung. Welches dieser Verfahren fur ein spezielles Problem das gunstigste ist, ist bis heute noch ungeklart. Im vorliegenden Buch werden nach Behandlung der mathematischen Grundlagen ganzzahliger Optimierungsprobleme sowie nach einer kurzen Einfuhrung in die Theorie linearer Programme und in die Theorie der Dualitat zunachst Transport-und Zuordnungsprobleme behandelt. Dabei werden auch neueste Entwicklungen berucksichtigt, wie etwa das Optimum- Mix-Problem oder die Erstellung von Schulstundenplanen. Daran schliesst sich eine Diskussion der Verfahren von Gomory an, wobei im besonderen auf das reinganzzahlige (zweite) Verfahren von Gomory Wert gelegt wurde.
