This volume contains the papers presented at the 9th European Conference on Case-Based Reasoning (ECCBR 2008). Case-based reasoning (CBR) is an arti?cial intelligence approach whereby new problems are solved by remembering, adapting and reusing solutions to a previously solved, similar problem. The collection of previously solved problems andtheirassociatedsolutionsisstoredinthecasebase. Neworadaptedsolutions are learned and updated in the case base as needed. In remembrance of the First European Workshop on Case-Based Reasoning, which took place 15 years ago at the European Academy Otzenhausen, not far from Trier, this year's conference was especially devoted to the past, present, and future of case-based reasoning. ECCBR and the International Conference on Case-Based Reasoning (IC- CBR) alternate every year. ECCBR 2008 followed a series of seven successful European workshops previously held in Otzenhausen, Germany (1993), Ch- tilly, France (1994), Lausanne, Switzerland (1996), Dublin, Ireland (1998), and Trento, Italy (2000), and three European conferences in Aberdeen, UK (2002), ] Madrid, Spain (2004), and Olu ]deniz/Fethiye, Turkey (2006). The International Conferences on Case-Based Reasoning (ICCBR) were previously held in Ses- bra, Portugal (1995), Providence, Rhode Island, USA (1997), Seeon, Germany (1999), Vancouver, Canada (2001), Trondheim, Norway (2003), Chicago, USA (2005), and Belfast, Northern Ireland (2007). These meetings have a history of attracting ?rst-class European and international researchers and practiti- ers. The proceedings of the ECCBR and ICCBR conferences are published by Springer in their LNAI series."

Professional knowledge management is imperative for the success of enterprises. One decisive factor for the success of knowledge management projects is the coordination of elements such as corporate culture, enterprise organization, - man resource management, as well as information and communication techn- ogy. The proper alignment and balancing of these factors are currently little understood especially the role of information technology, which is often - garded only as an implementation tool, though it can be a catalyst by making new knowledge management solutions possible. This conference brought together representativesfrom practical and research ?elds for discussing experiences, professional applications, and visions through presentations, workshops, tutorials, and an accompanying industry exhibition. The main focus of the conference was the realization of knowledge mana- ment strategies with the aid of innovative information technology solutions, such as intelligent access to organizational memories, or integration of business processes and knowledge management. Also of interest were holistic/integrative approaches to knowledge management that deal with issues raised by the in- gration of people, organizations, and information technology."

In just few years, case-based reasoning has evolved from a research topic studied at a small number of specialized academic labs into an industrial-strength technology applied in various fields. The INRECA methodology presented in detail in this monograph provides a data analysis framework for developing case-based reasoning solutions for successful applications in real-world industrial contexts.

The book is divided into parts on:

- smarter business with case-based decision support;
- developing case-based applications using the INRECA methodology; and
- using the methodology in various application domains.

The book provides a self-contained introduction to case-based reasoning applications that address both R&D professionals and general IT managers interested in this powerful new technology.

In this second edition, improvements and updates have been incorporated throughout the text. Particularly useful is the systematic coverage of experience factory applications at various steps; and, of course, the references have been extended substantially.

This book deals with experience management in the context of real-world applicability and realistic applications. A particular focus is given by the requirements that arise in complex problem solving and by the fact that modern experience management must be implemented as Internet-based applications. Concrete application areas that are discussed in this book are electronic commerce, diagnosis of complex technical equipment, and electronic design reuse. This book explores how experience management can be supported by information technology, especially by techniques that stem from knowledge-based systems, case-based reasoning, machine learning, and process modeling. It surveys different methods in a unified terminology and investigates them with respect to application requirements. Further, the process of application development and maintenance is highlighted, pointing out successful practically proven ways for obtaining and operating experience management applications.

The biennial International Conference on Case-Based Reasoning (ICCBR) - ries, which began in Sesimbra, Portugal, in 1995, was intended to provide an international forum for the best fundamental and applied research in case-based reasoning (CBR). It was hoped that such a forum would encourage the g- wth and rigor of the eld and overcome the previous tendency toward isolated national CBR communities. The foresight of the original ICCBR organizers has been rewarded by the growth of a vigorous and cosmopolitan CBR community. CBR is now widely recognized as a powerful and important computational technique for a wide range of practical applications. By promoting an exchange of ideas among CBR researchers from across the globe, the ICCBR series has facilitated the broader acceptance and use of CBR. ICCBR-99 has continued this tradition by attracting high-quality research and applications papers from around the world. Researchers from 21 countries submitted 80 papers to ICCBR-99. From these submissions, 17 papers were selected for long oral presentation, 7 were accepted for short oral presentation, and 19 papers were accepted as posters. This volume sets forth these 43 papers, which contain both mature work and innovative new ideas.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 45th German Conference on Artificial Intelligence, KI 2022, held in September 2022.The 12 full and 5 short papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 51 submissions. Additionally, five abstracts of invited talks are included. As well-established annual conference series KI is dedicated to research on theory and applications across all methods and topic areas of AI research. Due to COVID-19 the conference was held virtually. For the sixth time, the German special interest group on Distributed Arti?cial Intelligence in cooperation with the Steering Committee of MATES organized the German Conference on Multiagent System Technologies - MATES 2008. This conference, which took place during September 23-26, 2008 in Kaisersla- ern, followed a series of successful predecessor conferences in Erfurt (2003, 2004, and 2006), Koblenz (2005), and Leipzig (2007). MATES 2008 was co-located with the 31st German Conference on Arti?cial Intelligence (KI 2008) and was hosted by the University of Kaiserslautern and the German Research Center for Arti?cial Intelligence (DFKI). As in recent years, MATES 2008 provided a distinguished, lively, and - terdisciplinary forum for researchers, users, and developers of agent technology to present and discuss the latest advances of research and development in the area of autonomous agents and multiagent systems. Accordingly, the topics of MATES 2008 covered the whole range: from the theory to applications of agent and multiagent technology. In all, 35 papers were submitted from authors from 11 countries. The accepted 16 full papers included in this proceedings volume and presented as talks at the conference were chosen based on a thorough and highly selective review process. Each paper was reviewed and discussed by at least three Program Committee members and revised according to their c- ments. We believe that the papers of this volume are a representative snapshot of current research and contribute to both theoretical and applied aspects of autonomous agents and multiagent systems.
