Wheezy Tweet doesn't have an easy life. She lives in a foster home
run by the tyrannical Mrs. Bodely; she suffers from multiple
disabilities; and despite her many medications, she still sees
monsters everywhere. To make matters worse, Wheezy's new boyfriend
is turning into a dangerous were-crab, and her grandfather has been
stolen and replaced with an endless nothing-along with much of the
United States. Now it's up to Wheezy to stop them from taking the
entire earth. Small and powerless she might be, but she has a
cockroach named Forn Hall to mentor her, a few alien friends at the
Stardust Hotel to assist her, and a boundless sense of optimism to
keep her going when everything seems hopeless. Can Wheezy Tweet
save the universe ... again? Author Bio Ralph Bourne taught special
education for twenty-seven years. He has written several musical
plays, including Calliope and Moses Leads the Children. He is also
the author of Don't Believe It, Martha and The Unfortunate Crack in
the Universe, another Wheezy Tweet adventure.
Her real name is Mariah, but she has asthma and a hoarse voice, so
everyone calls her Wheezy. Wheezy is an abandoned child, left at
her grandfather's trailer by parents who simply disappear one day
(Wheezy thinks they were taken by aliens). When her grandfather's
crop duster plane crashes (Wheezy was flying), she is sent to a
care home to be under the thumb of the tyrannical Velma Bodely.
Meanwhile, she attends Hope Special Day School (called "Hopeless
Day" by many), because she is different. For example, she finds
walking and learning difficult, she has seizures, she hears strange
voices, and worse-she sometimes sees monsters no one else sees. In
fact, people think she's crazy. She often thinks she is crazy too,
until she realizes she is not the only person who sees what she
sees. Maybe she isn't crazy? With the help of some new friends,
Wheezy finds the universe has been torn, and she is one of the few
who can see the result-everything is messed up. She realizes it is
now up to her and her friends to save the universe. She isn't sure
she is up to the task. "How can I save the universe? I'm still in
bonehead math." But no matter what obstacles confront her, Wheezy
Tweet will always try her best.
Schylla, the terrible mother of the vile beast called Grendel,
tears herself painfully from the bloody caverns of hell. She seeks
revenge for the murder of her child, and she must protect innocent
nature from the brutal slaughter of men.
"Grendel's Mother" provides a differing vision of the stuggles
of Beowulf. Beyond violent revenge and savage death, the goddess
seeks a confused peace and a strange, convoluted love.
