Hilltop School closed its fall term with just ninety-five students;
it opened again two weeks later, on the third of January, with
ninety-six; and thereby hangs this tale. Kenneth Garwood had been
booked for Hilltop in the autumn, but circumstances had interfered
with the family's plans. Instead he journeyed to Moritzville on the
afternoon of the day preceding the commencement of the new term, a
very cold and blustery January afternoon, during much of which he
sat curled tightly into a corner of his seat in the poorly heated
day coach, which was the best the train afforded, and wondered why
the Connecticut Valley was so much colder than Cleveland, Ohio. He
had taken an early train from New York, and all the way to
Moritzville had sought with natural eagerness for sight of his
future schoolmates. But he had been unsuccessful. When Hilltop
returns to school it takes the mid-afternoon express which reaches
Moritzville just in time for dinner, whereas Kenneth reached the
school before it was dark, and at a quarter of five was in
undisputed possession, for the time being, of Number 12, Lower
House.

camp-fire at Saddle Pass, a shallow notch in the lower end of the
Sangre de Cristo Range in southern Colorado. Although it was the
middle of June and summer had come to the valleys below, up here in
the mountains the evenings were still chill, and the warmth of the
crackling fire felt grateful to tired bodies. Daylight yet held,
although it was fast deepening toward dusk. The sun had been gone
some little time behind the purple grandeur of Sierra Blanca, but
eastward the snowy tips of the Spanish Peaks were still flushed
with the afterglow.

Bart! he may hear you." "What if he does, ninny? I want him to.
Say, Spinach!" "Do you suppose he's going to try and play football,
Bart?" "Not he. He's looking for a rake. Thinks this is a hayfield,
Wall." The speakers were lying on the turf back of the north goal
on the campus at Hillton Academy. The elder and larger of the two
was a rather coarse-looking youth of seventeen. His name was
Bartlett Cloud, shortened by his acquaintances to "Bart" for the
sake of that brevity beloved of the schoolboy. His companion,
Wallace Clausen, was a handsome though rather frail-looking boy, a
year his junior. The two were roommates and friends.

inception, one evening toward the last of June, in Number 17 Sumner
Hall, which is the oldest, most vine-hidden and most hallowed of
the seven dormitories of Dexter Academy. It was a particularly warm
evening, the two windows were wide open and the green-shaded light
on the study table in the centre of the room had been turned low -
Sumner prided itself on being conservative to the extent of gas
instead of electricity and tin bathtubs instead of porcelain - and
in the dim radiance the three occupants of the room were scarcely
more than darker blurs. Since final examinations had ended that
afternoon and Graduation Day was only some twenty-eight hours away,
none of the three was doing anything more onerous than yawning, and
the yawn which came from Perry Bush, didn't sound as though it cost
much of an effort. It was, rather, a comfortable, sleepy yawn, one
that expressed contentment and relief, a sort of
"Glad-that's-over-and-I'm-still-alive" yawn.

Third down, four yards to gain! The referee trotted out of the
scrimmage line and blew his whistle; the Hillton quarter-back
crouched again behind the big center; the other backs scurried to
their places as though for a kick. "9 - 6 - 12!" calle
