Die mehr als 500 Jahre anhaltende Kolonialherrschaft uber Puerto Rico unter spanischer, spater unter US-amerikanischer Flagge, liess eine Nation entstehen, der eine besondere Rolle zuzuschreiben ist: Als Protektorat der USA befindet sich Puerto Rico in einer Nahtposition zwischen Nord- und Sudamerika. Fur die Beschreibung dieser schwierigen Mittlerposition erweist sich der Parameter Sprache als aussagekraftig, da gerade das Sprachverhalten in seinen widerspruchlichen Facetten die Identitat der Puertoricaner widerspiegelt. Umgekehrt lasst sich das sprachliche Verhalten nicht ohne den Einbezug zahlreicher relevanter Faktoren verstehen. Die bestandige Kontaktsituation, ein daraus resultierendes Spannungsverhaltnis zu den USA sowie kontaktbedingte Sprachwandelprozesse sind einige der Aspekte, die auf verschiedenen Ebenen und in unterschiedlichen Dimensionen erfasst und mit Hilfe eines sprachwissenschaftlich mehrdimensionalen Modells, des OEkologie-Konzeptes, untersucht werden. Dabei wird der Frage nachgegangen, welche Formen der Hybridisierung beide Sprachsysteme - Spanisch und Englisch - bereits entwickelt haben und in welchen Beziehungen diese zur identitaren Ebene stehen.

Die Auseinandersetzung mit der Thematik des kulturellen und sprachlichen Kontaktes zwischen Spanisch und indigenen Sprachen stellt ein aktuelles Forschungsgebiet innerhalb der Lateinamerikanistik dar. Dieser Untersuchungsgegenstand, beeinflusst von sich standig andernden sprachlichen, gesellschaftlichen und politischen Dynamiken, verlangt nach innovativen und kompatiblen Betrachtungsweisen, um der zentralen Frage nachzugehen, wie Situationen der multiplen Mehrsprachigkeit in einer so verflochtenen Sprachkontaktsituation, wie sie beispielsweise in Guatemala zu finden ist, gemanaged werden. Mittels der Anwendung des Paradigmas der Sprachoekologie im Verbund mit multimodaler Konversationsanalyse konnten in dieser Dissertation soziale, regionale, kulturelle und historische Gesichtspunkte miteinander vereint werden, um die Sprachkontaktsituation eines spezifischen Landes, in diesem Falle Guatemalas, ganzheitlich zu eroertern.

This book presents a uniform, abstract model of linguistic ecology based on, among other things, two concepts of Edmund Husserl's philosophy (parts and wholes, and foundation). It considers the individual speaker in the specific communication situation to be the essential heuristic basis of linguistic analysis.
