miRNAs are a class of endogenous, small non-protein coding RNA molecules (~ 22 nucleotides) which are novel post-transcriptional regulators of gene expression. Since we have hundreds of miRNAs, the major challenge is now to understand their specific biological function. In fact the experimental evidence suggests that signaling pathways could be ideal candidates for miRNA-mediated regulation. Several studies suggest that miRNAs affect the responsiveness of cells to signaling molecules such as WNT, Notch, TGF- and EGFR. Altered expression of particular miRNAs has been implicated in the onset and development of cancer and could be used as potential biomarkers for the disease. Recently, many studies have found miRNAs have crucial regulatory roles in Cancer stem cells (CSCs) a kind of tumor initiating cells (TICs) and dormancy. Findings also suggest that DNA methylation may be important in regulating the expression of many miRNAs in several cancer initiating cells. Several miRNAs are known to either upregulated or downregulated in CSCs when compared to non-cancerous cells from the same tissues. CSCs are a small subpopulation of cells identified in a variety of tumors and involve in self-renewal, differentiation, chemoresistance and tumorigenesis. The volume will give a comprehensive account of important advancements in the area of miRNAs and cancer.

In this study, Synthetic Hexaploid lines of Wheat viz., Syn 4, Syn 55 and Syn 86 were screened for resistance against virulence stem rust pathotype 40A at Division of Genetics, IARI, New Delhi. The nature of inheritance of gene governing the resistance in these synthetic lines and their allelic relationship were studied. The gene for resistance in Syn 4 and Syn 55 was found to be same, as confirmed by the test of allelism. In Syn 86. The resistance to stem rust was governed by two genes one dominant and one recessive). The F2 population developed from a cross between Syn 4 x Agra local, was used to identify molecular marker linked to stem rust resistance gene. A total of 75 RAPD's and 35 SSR primer pair were selected covering D-Genome and B-Genome on the basis of chromosomal location of resistance gene. The SSR marker Xgwm533 was found to be linked with resistance gene at a distance of 5cM and marker Xgwm389 was co-segregating. Xgwm533 was taken from B-Genome hence, the resistance gene to be located on 3-B Genome of wheat. The use of these markers in combination with other marker could better predict the presence of gene for resistance to stem rust in breeding population.
The book is prepared for small, medium and large categories of farmers to study the gap between existing and balanced feeding schedule, feed-milk production relationship and least cost feeding schedule for milch cattle & buffaloes in Hisar and Karnal districts of Haryana state in India. The book concludes, the highest quantity of green fodder and concentrate were offered on large farms. While on small farms feeding of dry fodder was higher in both districts. Milk yield per milch animal was found higher on larger farms than smaller ones in both the districts. The optimum least cost feeding schedule for milch dairy animals was found profitable over existing feeding schedule in both districts. Thus farmers could reduce their feeding cost and maximize profit from dairy enterprise by the adoption of least cost feeding schedule and better management of their milch dairy animals. In case of feed-milk production relationship digestible crude protein (DCP), concentrate and green fodder were observed to have significant impact on milk yield in both districts.

The book reports how the livelihoods of people particularly in rural area of Nepal depends on natural resources. The study shows the contribution of watershed management; which is management of complex elements(Water, Land, Forest, and People itself) to sustain their livelihoods. The farming system heavily depends on natural resources. Increase in population and its dependency on land resources has resulted on the degradation of watersheds. Government of Nepal has been implementing various watershed management programs to address the issues. Poverty reduction is worthless without considering the sustainable management of land resources, as the majority of the people depend on these resources. Peoples' participation is must for sustainable watershed management. Author has explored different aspects of watershed management and tried to find out the contribution of watershed management program to the livelihoods of local people considering sustainable livelihood framework by identifying the criteria and indicators of watershed management activities. The work is quite beneficial to researchers, students, practitioners and policy makers involved in NRM.
Although there have been tremendous progress in cancer research and treatment, the mortality caused by this disease is still very high. Cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide and second leading cause of death in the United States of America. The book covers topics including the role of various signalling pathway in development, regulation of cell fate, tumour angiogenesis, duodenal neoplasias, breast, colorectal and prostate cancer, cancer development and progression, microRNA in cancer and epigenetic regulation of cancer. This book will provide valuable information for cell biologists, geneticists, cancer biologists, clinicians, and students involved in various aspects of cell signalling, regulation of genes and cancer. |
