Sri Ramana Maharshi schrieb wenig, und das auch nur, wenn andere ihn darum baten. So entstanden diese 40 Verse etwa 1928 auf Dr ngen von Muruganar hin. Ramana verfasste sie in seiner Muttersprache Tamil und nannte sie Ulladu Narpadu . Ulladu bedeutet, das was ist, was existiert, was wirklich ist und Narpadu bedeutet vierzig. Deshalb kann man bersetzen: Vierzig Verse ber die Wirklichkeit oder ber das, was ist. Die 40 Verse mit den Erg nzungsversen ergeben ein rundes Ganzes der Lehre Ramanas und eignen sich hervorragend daf r, sie immer wieder zu berdenken. Wer bin ich und Die Quintessenz der spirituellen Unterweisung (Upadesa Saram), die im selben Verlag erschienen sind, sind weitere Werke Ramana Maharshis, die mit diesem B chlein eng verwoben sind.

Ramana Maharshi war erst 21 Jahre alt, als er die Grundlage fur das Buchlein Wer bin ich? schuf, ohne dass er je die Absicht hatte, ein Buch uber seine Lehre zu schreiben. Er wohnte in der Virupaksha-Hohle auf dem Arunachala. Obwohl er in jener Zeit nicht sprach, fuhlten die Menschen instinktiv, dass er ein Weiser war und kamen mit ihren spirituellen Fragen und Problemen zu ihm. Einer von ihnen war Sivaprakasam Pillai, ein Philosoph, der bei einer Finanzbehorde beschaftigt war. In den Buchern, die er studiert hatte, konnte er auf seine existenzielle Frage Wer bin ich? keine Antwort finden. 1902 besuchte er den Maharshi auf dem Berg und stellte ihm seine brennenden Fragen. Ramana schrieb die Antworten entweder auf den Boden oder mit Kreide auf Schiefer. Sivaprakasam Pillai schrieb sich die Fragen und Antworten nachtraglich aus dem Gedachtnis auf. Seine Sammlung wurde jedoch erst 1923 als Frage-und-Antwort-Version veroffentlicht. Ramana hat wenige Jahre spater davon eine Essay-Version verfasst.
