It is necessary to know the opinions, practices and expectations of teachers in training and in practicing, to improve teacher education programs. This Handbook addresses the challenges for the profession of teaching of history and geography, who, in several European countries such as Spain and France, share initial training and teaching in both disciplines. Researchers' contributions have been collected from eight countries. The majority of Spanish universities, eleven, have shared an extensive research project, but have also had the collaboration and participation of researchers from seven other countries: Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Portugal, Sweden and the United States. It is about collective work, in a network, rather than the sum of individual contributions.

The five contributions describe some key mathematical concepts involved in the study of complex systems and non-perturbative problems. The selection of topics is intended to cross-fertilize the various fields where complex systems theory has made an impact. The book presents specific and detailed results meant for a wide audience of researchers and students. It begins with those contributions which help to set up a general theoretical framework and ends with selected applications to the particular areas of biophysics, statistical physics, astrophysics and cosmology. It also includes an extensive bibliography. This pedagogically written text can be used as an introduction to the fundamental ideas behind complex systems theory.
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 11th European Conference on Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases, PKDD 2007, held in Warsaw, Poland, in September 2007, co-located with ECML 2007, the 18th European Conference on Machine Learning. The 28 revised full papers and 35 revised short papers presented together with abstracts of 4 invited talks were carefully reviewed and selected from 592 papers submitted to both, ECML and PKDD. The papers present original results on leading-edge subjects of knowledge discovery from conventional and complex data and address all current issues in the area.
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 18th European Conference on Machine Learning, ECML 2007, held in Warsaw, Poland, September 17-21, 2007, jointly with PKDD 2007. The 41 revised full papers and 37 revised short papers presented together with abstracts of 4 invited talks were carefully reviewed and selected from 592 abstracts submitted to both, ECML and PKDD. The papers present a wealth of new results in the area and address all current issues in machine learning.
The biennial European Conference on Machine Learning (ECML) series is intended to provide an international forum for the discussion of the latest high quality research results in machine learning and is the major European scienti?c event in the ?eld. The eleventh conference (ECML 2000) held in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain from May 31 to June 2, 2000, has continued this tradition by attracting high quality papers from around the world. Scientists from 21 countries submitted 100 papers to ECML 2000, from which 20 were selected for long oral presentations and 23 for short oral presentations. This selection was based on the recommendations of at least two reviewers for each submitted paper. It is worth noticing that the number of papers reporting applications of machine learning has increased in comparison to past ECML conferences. We believe this fact shows the growing maturity of the ?eld. This volume contains the 43 accepted papers as well as the invited talks by Katharina Morik from the University of Dortmund and Pedro Domingos from the University of Washington at Seattle. In addition, three workshops were jointly organized by ECML 2000 and the European Network of Excellence - net: "Dealing with Structured Data in Machine Learning and Statistics W- stites", "Machine Learning in the New Information Age" , and "Meta-Learning: Building Automatic Advice Strategies for Model Selection and Method Com- nation".
Economic growth as we know it today cannot persist indefinitely if it entails continuous degradation of natural resources and the environment. While in a few countries around the world it appears that environmental degradation has been the result of rapid economic growth, in the vast majority of the developing countries the environment has been equally spoiled despite slow or even negative economic growth. This book provides new insights on the common roots of economic stagnation, poverty and environmental degradation which, unfortunately, generally reside in misguided government policies and priorities. By doing this, the volume seeks to provide a broader policy option framework than those found in conventional policy analyses, mainly dominated by the "Washington Consensus". It shows that a major omission of the conventional view is that governments tend to allocate government expenditures in a biased way favouring subsidies to the economic elites to the detriment of investments in public goods, including human capital, R&D, as well as the development of institutions (environmental and otherwise), which are vital for long run growth, poverty reduction and environmental sustainability.
`La suave patria’ is often regarded as the Mexican national poem, an extraordinary tour-de-force that would change forever the way that poetry would develop in Mexico. It was one of the last works by Ramón López Velarde, who died of pneumonia at the age of only 33 in 1921, and is the work for which he is most remembered today. After his death, his reputation took some time to grow, but his later espousal by major figures such Xavier Villaurrutia and Octavio Paz has ensured that he will remain central to the story of Mexican 20th century literature. The translation offered here, by poet-novelist (and current President of PEN International), Jennifer Clement, is a remarkable achievement and brings the poem into English for a new generation of readers. The poem is contextualised in an essay by the Mexican poet, Luis Miguel Aguilar, and is embellished by a startling suite of paintings by Gustavo Monroy, from his `New Screen of the Conquest’—a 21st-century companion work to the original folding `Screen of the Conquest and View of the City of Mexico’, an anonymous work from the late 17th century which measures some 2.1 meters high by 5.5 meters wide. Monroy’s brutally ironic modern equivalent stands in the same museum as the original screen.
Ramon Lopez Velarde (1888-1921) was one of the most Mexican of Mexican poets, whose sense of history found expression in many poems, including his best-known "La suave Patria" ("Sweet Land"). This bilingual collection, drawn primarily from Poesias completas y el minutero, offers English-language readers our first book-length introduction to his poetry. Often called a "poet of the provinces," Lopez Velarde gives us a glimpse into a slower and more gentle way of life. His poems present the contrast between city and hometown and between urban and pastoral landscapes. Through these contrasts runs the thread of religious faith, while urgency of language informs the entire body of his poetic production. Original, specially commissioned drawings by noted contemporary Mexican artist Juan Soriano complement the poems. This combination of poetry and art speaks to universal emotions; indeed the poetry of Lopez Velarde belongs to everyone who sings the Song of the Heart.
