HOLLAND-FREI CANCER MEDICINE The latest edition of the
gold-standard in cancer science and clinical oncology references In
the newly revised Tenth Edition of Holland-Frei Cancer Medicine, a
team of distinguished researchers and practitioners delivers a
comprehensive and up-to-date discussion of cancer science and
clinical oncology practice. The book contains timely and
indispensable information on epidemiology, etiology, cancer
biology, immunology, prevention, screening, clinical presentation,
pathology, imaging, and therapy. Grounded in a fundamental
understanding of cancer biology, Holland-Frei Cancer Medicine
combines scientific principles with clinical practice. It contains
hundreds of full-color illustrations and photographs, tables,
graphs, and algorithms that complement and enhance the complex
topics discussed within the book. This book is an invaluable
clinical tool that provides readers with overview boxes, additional
references, and other pedagogic features designed to make the
content easy to access and comprehend. Readers will also find: A
translational and integrated approach throughout the book that
combines cancer biology with cancer management A strong emphasis on
multidisciplinary, research-driven patient care that improves
outcomes and allows for the optimal use of all clinically
appropriate therapies Discussions of the most current personalized
cancer care, including molecular diagnostics and therapeutics
Perfect for medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and
internists, Holland-Frei Cancer Medicine, Tenth Edition will also
earn a place in the libraries of allied health professionals
involved in the treatment of cancer patients. This book is
published in collaboration with the American Association for Cancer
Research: https://www.aacr.org/ Â
Among the standard oncology modalities, surgical oncology is
singular in that it lacks a separate board certification or even an
added qualification mecha nism. 'Card-carrying' surgical
oncologists are certified by the American Board of Surgery, as are
all other general surgeons. What distinguishes the surgical
oncologist is a set of cognitive skills rather than a specific
armamentarium of surgical techniques. This different conceptual
framework is derived from ex tensive additional training that leads
to an in-depth understanding of the natural history and biologic
behavior of the various solid tumor systems. Equipped with this
perspective, the surgical oncologist is particularly well
positioned to integrate the various available therapeutic
modalities into a coherent care program for the solid tumor
patient. As a central theme, the chapters of this book demonstrate
that increasingly sophisticated diagnostic and staging approaches
are helping to move chemo therapy and radiotherapy into the
preoperative neoadjuvant setting. This fundamental alteration is
based on the awareness that even early-stage solid tumor disease is
frequently systemic at the time of presentation, at least on a
subclinical level. And although the primary tumor may be
controllable by surgery with radiotherapy, the uncontrolled (and
initially clinically unappar ent) distant disease ultimately
determines patient survival. The other perspec tive driving the
neoadjuvant approach is an emerging awareness that for most solid
tumor systems, neoadjuvant treatment responses can facilitate less
muti lating surgery with comparable levels of local disease
control.

The landscape of academic surgery has become increasingly complex.
Young academic surgeons are now confronted with the task of
juggling administrative, clinical, educational, and research
responsibilities. While decades ago young faculty would look toward
a single "triple threat" mentor, trainees and young junior faculty
now must assemble a team of mentors who can help him/her craft a
career trajectory for success in academia. In addition, with the
emergence of team based science and an emphasis on clinical "crew
management" faculty now must hone their leadership skills to be
effective in the research and clinical environment. While many
books focus on specific research or technical surgical topics,
there is a need for an accessible, user-friendly text on the
subject of surgical mentorship and leadership. In particular, there
is a strong desire among trainees and young surgeons to learn about
mentorship, as well as define leadership tools. Currently, there is
a gap in the market for a definitive reference on surgical
leadership and mentorship. This text will provide a comprehensive,
state-of-the art definitive reference on surgical mentorship and
leadership. The book will provide a practical, useful guide that
reviews select topics on leadership and mentorship, as well as
provide key information on how to launch a successful "young"
surgical career. This text will focus on key points on how to
identify mentors, highlight mentor-mentee "pearls", as well as
define key leadership traits in being successful as an academic
surgeon. This text will serve as a very useful resource for young
surgical faculty, as well as fellows and residents in a broad array
of surgical training programs. Chapters will have multiple "call
out" boxes to highlight key lessons learned, as well as provide
mentorship and leadership "pearls." All chapters will be written by
experts in their field and will include the most up-to-date
information from national and international leaders.
