In response to the recent surge in extractive natural resource
investments in Africa, this insightful book explores how relations
between investors, ruling elites, and local populations develop
when large-scale investments in gas, minerals, and agriculture
expand. Advancing a multi-level approach that encompasses rigorous
theoretical analysis, fieldwork, and literature review, expert
contributors examine the implementation of natural resource
investments and the extent to which they respect procedural rights
of local populations. Chapters draw together understudied bodies of
literature on land-grabbing debates, the resource curse controversy
and corporate social responsibility (CSR), demonstrating how the
chances of large-scale investments in natural resources are at
their greatest when characterised by 'reciprocal exchange deals'
between investors and local populations, 'compatible interests'
between ruling elites and investors, and 'mutual recognition'
between local populations and ruling elites. Through a careful
examination of case studies in Mozambique, Tanzania, and Uganda,
the book ultimately highlights the complexity of the political
economy of natural resource investments. Providing valuable
theoretical and empirical insights, this book will be an
invigorating read for scholars and students of political economy,
political geography, sustainability, CSR, and business studies. Its
valuable insights on how natural resource investments might
accelerate economic growth and consolidate links between local and
global economies will also be of interest to development
practitioners and investors.
Exploring why professional team sport clubs are almost always able
to survive despite financial mismanagement, inflated player
salaries and persistent deficits, this book provides new evidence
on how to explain this phenomenon. It looks at the context in which
many clubs operate - the soft budget constraint - and how the clubs
in this respect resemble state-owned enterprises in socialist
countries or big banks in financial crises. Chapters discuss the
challenge of hardening the budget constraint, including UEFA's
Financial Fair Play regulation. They include new data about the
soft budget constraint phenomenon, including evidence from Central
and Eastern Europe. Leading scholars in the field develop the
theoretical approach to the topic using institutional theory,
dialogue with critics and discussions on the merits and limits of
soft budgets. The book also investigates key case studies of
bailouts and liquidation of professional sports teams. This will be
an invigorating read for scholars and students of sports economics
and sports management. It will also be helpful to managers and
directors in professional sports clubs looking for a better
understanding of the soft budget constraint.
This timely book unpacks the idea of 'disaster' from a variety of
approaches, broadening understanding and improving the usability of
this complex and often contested concept. Including
multidisciplinary perspectives from leading and emerging scholars,
it offers reflections on how the concept of disaster has been
shaped by and within various fields of research, providing
complementary and thought-provoking comparisons across many
domains. Functioning as an important point of reference between and
across disciplines, chapters explore the forces and building blocks
of disaster and how these are interpreted, providing opportunities
for dialogue between multiple points of view. The book concludes
with a broader, integrated discussion of the aspects of disaster
research covered, putting forward suggestions for further
cooperation between disciplines and a future research agenda.
Defining Disaster will be a fascinating read for disaster
researchers in disciplines including law, sociology, and social and
public policy who wish to improve their understanding of how their
work maps onto the wider field. It will also be beneficial for
policy makers and practitioners in this area looking for a rounded
view of contemporary cross-disciplinary research on the subject.

The development of health across an individual’s life depends on
many factors, but social determinants play a vital role. This
timely Handbook simultaneously uses theoretical, descriptive,
explanatory and policy approaches to explore health inequalities
related to income, education, occupational status, social capital,
and also biological and genetic factors. World- leading experts
define and present the most prominent research topics,
perspectives, and findings in the field and pose critical questions
from within and beyond the research community. Structured into five
parts this handbook addresses theories, methods, single stages of
the life course, long-term perspectives on the whole life course,
and policies. It helps readers understand the complexity of health
sociology while also investigating important mechanisms and
solutions through which health inequalities can be reduced.
Providing a comprehensive, multi- and interdisciplinary analysis of
topics and approaches to health inequalities, this Handbook will be
an inspiring resource for researchers seeking to expand their
knowledge and tackle new research questions. Advanced students of
sociology, demography, epidemiology, public health and related
fields will also benefit.
