This book proposes an alternative strategy to improve and sustain
prosperity, through the creation of an entrepreneurial culture in
learning cities or city regions. The edited collection provides
insights into how entrepreneurship, education, job creation and
social inclusion can be aligned through entrepreneurial learning,
in the context of territorial development. With rich and varied
contributions from a wide field, including policy makers,
entrepreneurs, an investment banker, leaders of universities and
councils, the voluntary sector, scientists, educators and students,
it reviews and assesses how learning cities and regions may become
more prosperous by investing in the development of entrepreneurial
skills throughout lifelong learning. Reinforced by examples on
developing and retaining entrepreneurial people, this book
contributes to our understanding of how entrepreneurial learning
can be fostered in different city and city-region contexts. It
makes an interesting contribution to the field in terms of mapping
out complex issues and testing the practical validity of the
concept, while also providing rich and insightful case studies
centred on the Welsh experience with entrepreneurial learning city
regions. The high quality international contributions demonstrate
the new worldwide interest in developing an entrepreneurial culture
for the benefit of a city or region, rather than an entrepreneurial
mind-set for individual benefit. This fascinating subject will be
of interest to many social scientists, policymakers, and
practitioners. It will be found especially valuable for
professionals involved in economic, inclusive and sustainable city
or regional development.
Advice is for Winners explains how to be more proactive and more
skilled in seeking advice from others for better decision making in
life and at work. The book describes the many benefits of advice
and why people often fail to seek it. Dr. Valdes-Perez offers a
comprehensive view of advice as a creative and fulfilling
intellectual, emotional, and social process. After reviewing
insights from the self-improvement and scholarly literature as well
as folk wisdom, he lays out principles and steps for doing it
right?as a lifelong habit. The author draws on his experiences as
an observer, traveler, father, academic research scientist, board
member, and software internet entrepreneur. Dr. Valdes-Perez was
co-founder, chairman, and nine-year CEO of Vivisimo, bought by IBM
in 2012, and was a 2007 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year.
He was on the computer science faculty at Carnegie Mellon
University, where earlier he completed a PhD under the Nobel
Laureate Herbert A. Simon. He remains involved in new start-up
ventures and lives with his family in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Mexico is the fourteenth largest country in the world and ranks
fifth in biodiversity. Located in the transition zone between the
temperate and tropical regions of North and South America, Mexico
is an important migratory corridor for wildlife and also provides
wintering habitat for several species of bats, monarch butterflies,
and temperate North American nesting birds. Mexico faces several
challenges to wildlife management and conservation efforts. While
there is increased public education and acknowledgment of the
valuable benefits wildlife provides, there is still much work to do
to incentivize conservation efforts. Fortunately, there is growing
recognition that Mexico's wildlife resources can be a critical
component in the rural economic development of the country.
Bringing together an international team of wildlife experts across
North America, Wildlife Ecology and Management in Mexico provides
information on the status, distribution, ecological relationships,
and habitat requirements and management of the most important game
birds and mammals in Mexico. It also reviews current threats and
challenges facing wildlife conservation as well as strategies for
resolving these issues. This reference is a valuable tool for
wildlife biologists, wildlife management professionals, and anyone
interested in conserving Mexico's wealth of natural resources. By
laying out the challenges to conservation research, editors Raul
Valdez and J. Alfonso Ortega-S. hope to encourage interdisciplinary
communication and collaboration across borders.
