The first time Ravi Shankar was arrested, he spoke out against
racist policing on National Public Radio and successfully sued the
city of New York. The second time, he was incarcerated when his
promotion to full professor was finalized. During his ninety-day
pretrial confinement at the Hartford Correctional Center--a level
4, high-security urban jail in Connecticut--he met men who shared
harrowing and heart-felt stories. The experience taught him about
the persistence of structural racism, the limitations of mass
media, and the pervasive traumas of twenty-first-century daily
life. Shankar's bold and complex self-portrait--and portrait of
America--challenges us to rethink our complicity in the criminal
justice system and mental health policies that perpetuate inequity
and harm. Correctional dives into the inner workings of his mind
and heart, framing his unexpected encounters with law and order
through the lenses of race, class, privilege, and his bicultural
upbringing as the first and only son of South Indian immigrants.
Vignettes from his early life set the scene for his spectacular
fall and subsequent struggle to come to terms with his own demons.
Many of them, it turns out, are also our own.
This transformative collection of the teachings of renowned
spiritual leader Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar will help readers
find balance, peace, and joy amid the ups and downs of everyday
life. Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has changed the lives of
millions of people around the world for the better. Yet many in the
West have not been introduced to his profound and practical
approach to living a spiritual life. This book is meant to bridge
that gap. In June of 1995, Gurudev began a weekly tradition of
creating a short talk, often on a subject that was relevant to
current events or in response to questions posed by audiences at
his international gatherings. What resulted were powerful words of
wisdom, accompanied by much celebration, laughter, and
lightheartedness. This book is a collection of those transcribed
talks, spanning almost a decade. Gurudev's teachings can make a
huge difference in how a person lives their life, how they interact
with their family, friends, and co-workers, how they understand the
spiritual path, and how they walk it. This extraordinary
compilation of insights can help readers on their journeys within,
to that all-encompassing love, joy, and peace at their cores

Language for a New Century celebrates the artistic and cultural
forces flourishing today in the East, bringing together an
unprecedented selection of works by South Asian, East Asian, Middle
Eastern, and Central Asian poets as well as poets living in the
Diaspora. Some poets, such as Bei Dao and Mahmoud Darwish, are
acclaimed worldwide, but many more will be new to the reader. The
collection includes 400 unique voices political and apolitical,
monastic and erotic that represent a wider artistic movement that
challenges thousand-year-old traditions, broadening our notion of
contemporary literature. Each section of the anthology organized by
theme rather than by national affiliation is preceded by a personal
essay from the editors that introduces the poetry and exhorts
readers to examine their own identities in light of these powerful
poems. In an age of violence and terrorism, often predicated by
cultural ignorance, this anthology is a bold declaration of shared
humanity and devotion to the transformative power of art."

Storyline Things are not going too well for Jai Katragantala,
Senior Programmer Analyst from India locked away at the Immigration
detention center in Newark, New Jersey. He has been thrown in the
lam for several serious documentation violations. A stroke of luck
gets Jai selected for a parole contest initiated by the US
government to improve their image world-wide. At stake for Jai is
his freedom and a chance to unite with Rukki, his childhood
sweetheart. Anchor and anti-immigration evangelist Drew Droblin
tries his best to give Jai a bum steer. But the Indian programmer
is surprisingly good. Through flash-backs we get insights into how
Jai got into a tight spot. We are introduced to the world of H1B
programmers, and consulting. (Body shopping if you want to use the
pejorative word.) In the end it is left to the reader to decide if
Jai will be idealistic and altruistic or practical and worldly
wise. It is a screenplay with alternate endings.
"The poems in Deepening Groove proceed in elegant triplets that
drift effortlessly down the page on waves of sound, serenely
self-confident. The subjects are animals, trees, flowers, fish, the
weather, and the human condition, all mixed up in a heady stew that
simmers quietly one minute, and shimmers brightly the next. This is
a book of savvy, delicious surprises." -Wyn Cooper "In Deepening
Groove, Ravi Shankar's poems are small wonders of defining, seeing,
and sound. He is a poet fascinated with transformations and here
are shiftings of dust and sand, loon calls, flutterings of insects,
changing tides and splendid cascades- always information-driven,
often rapturous with Hopkins-like intensities, imperatives, and
trochaic stresses. What I'm most taken by is how the poems both see
and feel simultaneously: In "Dark," "Darkness in New England has a
flavor close / to anise, a texture plush as peat moss." In "Bats,"
the bats' flight is "carrying away pieces of us, / a maelstrom too
faint to see, turning to ellipsis...." In virtually all these
poems, to quote words from "Willard Pond," there is "a sense //
that the distance between the alternate / universes humans" and
other creatures on Earth] "inhabit is smaller / than ever imagined
and more astonishing." And although the poems give special
pleasures on first encounters, they contain-as in "The
Oyster"-"secrets that require / a knife to pry open and vinegar to
serve." Deepening Groove shows Ravi Shankar is truly, now, one of
America's finest younger poets." -Dick Allen Ravi Shankar is
Executive Director of Drunken Boat and Co-Director of the Creative
Writing Program at Central Connecticut State University. His first
full length book was Instrumentality (Word Press, 2004). Along with
Tina Chang and Nathalie Handal, he edited Language for a New
Century: Contemporary Poetry from Asia, the Middle East &
Beyond (W.W. Norton & Co.). He has appeared in the New York
Times and the Chronicle of Higher Education, and on the BBC and
NPR. He teaches in Fairfield University's MFA Program and in the
first international MFA Program at City University of Hong Kong.
