Originally published in 1985. In the last two decades education in the Third World has greatly expanded, raising many important issues. Some less developed countries have emulated the West in the style and organisation of their academic systems, hence, it could be said, increasing their dependence. Others have deliberately avoided this path, experimenting with systems more relevant to development and often in a radical way. At a theoretical level, Marxist and neo-Marxist development theorists argue that education systems dependent on the West are evidence of economic dependency and of the correctness of Marxist development theories; while others argue that the evidence points to an interdependent world and that dependency theories do not apply to education. Interestingly two key Marxist Third World Countries, China and Cuba, have very conservative education systems. This book discusses the problems of dependence and interdependence in education throughout the world.

One of the few records of German heroic poetry, Widsith was found in the Exeter Book, a manuscript of Old English poetry compiled in the late tenth century. The tale, in which the wandering poet and narrator Widsith recounts his travels across northern Europe, is often seen as a catalogue of tribes, people and heroes who existed between the third and fifth centuries. Yet it is also, in Raymond Wilson Chambers' words, a rare and valuable 'record of lost heroic song'. Originally published in 1912, Chambers' study provides an introduction to the background of the German heroic tradition, as well as detailed analyses of specific aspects of Widsith, such as the metre, geography, and critical reception of the poem. This scholarly edition also includes an annotated version of the poem, and maps, as well as an appendix which will be valuable to students and scholars of Old English literature.

Based on the experiences of the authors father "Fighting Poles" is a fictionalized story of action, adventure and history. Austria welcomed the German army, The Czechs accepted the inevitable, but Poland was overrun and occupied but never stopped fighting. France and England betrayed their ally never launching the attack that was to draw off the Nazi Juggernaut. Russia attacked Poland from the east and crushed the conventional forces. America and England signed the Atlantic Charter but later allowed Russia to defy it at Poland's expense. The Poles formed a shadow government and an underground army and fought the Nazis every day of the Occupation. While the rest of Europe cowered under the Nazi boot Warsaw rose up and fought, not once but twice and was the city left a wasteland. The Poles sent an enigma machine to England and helped break the German code and 200,000 Poles fought under British command only to be betrayed again by the west and handed over to Russia at wars end. Despite a bloodthirsty occupation and the loss of Six Million of it's citizens to Nazi barbarity and Russian deportation, Poland continued to fight. This is the story of a small piece of that fight and two families involvement in it. One Polish family member and one American come together for a brief moment only to be swallowed in the politics of the time.

Native Americans in the United States, similar to other indigenous people, created political, economic, and social movements to meet and adjust to major changes that impacted their cultures. For centuries, Native Americans dealt with the onslaught of non-Indian land claims, the appropriation of their homelands, and the destruction of their ways of life. Through various movements, Native Americans accepted, rejected, or accommodated themselves to the non-traditional worldviews of the colonizers and their policies. The A to Z of Native American Movements through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on important persons, places, events, and institutions and significant political, economic, social, and cultural aspects is a useful reference on topics dealing with key movements, organizations, leadership strategies, and the major issues Native Americans have confronted.
In an earlier book, Indian Boyhood, Charles Alexander Eastman (Ohiyesa) recounted the story of his traditional Sioux Childhood and youth. "From the Deep Woods to Civilization," first published in 1916, continues the narrative, beginning with his abrupt entry into the mainstream of Anglo-American life in 1873 at the age of fifteen. Eastman went on to become one of the best known educated Indians of his time, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree from Dartmouth in 1887 and a medical degree from Boston University in 1890. From his first job as physician at Pine Ridge Agency, where he witnessed the events that culminated in the Wounded Knee massacre, he devoted his life, both in and out of government service, to helping his fellow Indians adapt to the white world while retaining the best of their own culture.
