The Routledge Companion to Bioethics (Hardcover): John D. Arras, Elizabeth Fenton, Rebecca Kukla The Routledge Companion to Bioethics (Hardcover)
John D. Arras, Elizabeth Fenton, Rebecca Kukla
R6,588 Discovery Miles 65 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Routledge Companion to Bioethics is a comprehensive reference guide to a wide range of contemporary concerns in bioethics. The volume orients the reader in a changing landscape shaped by globalization, health disparities, and rapidly advancing technologies. Bioethics has begun a turn toward a systematic concern with social justice, population health, and public policy. While also covering more traditional topics, this volume fully captures this recent shift and foreshadows the resulting developments in bioethics. It highlights emerging issues such as climate change, transgender, and medical tourism, and re-examines enduring topics, such as autonomy, end-of-life care, and resource allocation.

Aesthetics and Cognition in Kant's Critical Philosophy (Paperback): Rebecca Kukla Aesthetics and Cognition in Kant's Critical Philosophy (Paperback)
Rebecca Kukla
R1,291 Discovery Miles 12 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This 2006 volume explores the relationship between Kant's aesthetic theory and his critical epistemology as articulated in the Critique of Pure Reason and the Critique of the Power of Judgment. The essays, written specially for this volume, explore core elements of Kant's epistemology, such as his notions of discursive understanding, experience, and objective judgment. They also demonstrate a rich grasp of Kant's critical epistemology that enables a deeper understanding of his aesthetics. Collectively, the essays reveal that Kant's critical project, and the dialectics of aesthetics and cognition within it, is still relevant to contemporary debates in epistemology, philosophy of mind, and the nature of experience and objectivity. The book also yields important lessons about the ineliminable, yet problematic place of imagination, sensibility and aesthetic experience in perception and cognition.

'Yo!' and 'Lo!': The Pragmatic Topography of the Space of Reasons (Hardcover): Rebecca Kukla, Mark Lance 'Yo!' and 'Lo!': The Pragmatic Topography of the Space of Reasons (Hardcover)
Rebecca Kukla, Mark Lance
R2,349 Discovery Miles 23 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Much of twentieth-century philosophy was organized around the "linguistic turn," in which metaphysical and epistemological issues were approached through an analysis of language. This turn was marked by two assumptions: that it was primarily the semantics of language that was relevant to broader philosophical issues, and that declarative assertions were the only verbal acts of serious philosophical interest. In "'Yo!' and 'Lo!'" Rebecca Kukla and Mark Lance reject these assumptions. Looking at philosophical problems starting with the pragmatics of language, they develop a typology of pragmatic categories of speech within which declaratives have no uniquely privileged position. They demonstrate that non-declarative speech acts--including vocative hails ("Yo!") and calls to shared attention ("Lo!")--are as fundamental to the possibility and structure of meaningful language as are declaratives.

Entering into conversation with the work of Anglo-American philosophers such as Wilfrid Sellars, Robert Brandom, and John McDowell, and Continental philosophers including Heidegger and Althusser, "'Yo!' and 'Lo!'" offers solutions (or dissolutions) to long-standing philosophical problems, such as how perception can be both inferentially fecund and responsive to an empirical world, and how moral judgment can be both objective and inherently motivating.

Mass Hysteria - Medicine, Culture, and Mothers' Bodies (Hardcover, New): Rebecca Kukla Mass Hysteria - Medicine, Culture, and Mothers' Bodies (Hardcover, New)
Rebecca Kukla
R4,219 Discovery Miles 42 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In Mass Hysteria, Rebecca Kukla examines the present-day medical and cultural practices surrounding pregnancy, new motherhood, and infant feeding. In the late-eighteenth century, the configuration of the maternal body underwent a radical transformation and the two maternal bodies that emerged out of this transformation still govern our imagination and rituals surrounding pregnancy and lactation. Exploring the history and the current life of these two maternal bodies within medical institutions, popular culture, and politics, Kukla offers a critical assessment of the lived repercussions of these ideological figures and practices for contemporary women's and infants' health and well-being.
