Der Epochenbegriff "Fruhe Neuzeit" hat in den letzten Jahren eine erstaunliche Karriere gemacht. Gepragt, um einer fernruckenden Phase der europaischen Politik- und Geistesgeschichte hinterherzuwinken, verwandelte er sich mit dem Ausbau der Universitaten in den 1960er Jahren in den Namen einer eigenen Disziplin. Institutionalisiert durch eigene Lehrstuhle, eigene Fachzeitschriften etc. breitete er sich uber immer mehr kulturwissenschaftliche Facher aus. Ausserdem wird der Fruhneuzeit-Begriff zunehmend fur Sachverhalte gebraucht, die nicht ausschliesslich oder gar nicht zu Europa gehoren: etwa fur die judische oder gar chinesische Geschichte; fur die arabische Literatur.
