Nachdem er sich von Wagner und dessen Ideal einer germanischen Wiedergeburt abgewendet hatte, orientierte sich Nietzsche an den kulturellen Debatten im Frankreich der 1880er Jahre. Paris galt ihm als die Hauptstadt des 19. Jahrhunderts und als eine Versuchsanstalt fur neue Werte und Lebensformen, aus der die Gesellschaft des kunftigen Europas hervorgehen sollte. Seit seinem Aufenthalt in Nizza im Winter 1883 bildet er seinen decadence-Begriff aus, vor allem anhand philosophischer und psychologischer Schriften von Autoren wie Bourget, Renan, Fere, Ribot und Taine. Die Bedeutung dieser und vieler anderer Autoren fur Nietzsches Werk wird hier in vollem Umfang dargestellt. Campioni hat wichtiges Quellenmaterial zu diesem Thema, u. a. aus der hinterlassenen Bibliothek des Philosophen in Weimar, untersucht.

The edition of Nietzsche's correspondence is concluded with the commentary on the letters from and to Nietzsche in the crisis-ridden period from 1887 to 1889. The effort required for the commentary is particularly great for this time, as nearly every document from the period has been subjected to intense comment and interpretation. Renate MA1/4ller-Buck, who has proved her worth in editing the letters from the very beginnning of the project, has not only been involved in collating and accessing the manuscript resources (particularly the drafts of letters) but has over and above this devoted her attention to unravelling difficult personal connections, personal and literary allusions and the complicated networks in this wide-ranging correspondence. The comprehensive index to Section III, to which Holger Schmid has made an equal contribution, now provides access to the final and most complex episode in Friedrich Nietzsche's life and work.

This volume presents the first compilation of all the works and notes from Nietzsche's personal library up to the beginning of January 1889. It lists the stocks from both the Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek and the Goethe- und Schiller Archiv in Weimar. The critical analysis of other stock lists has revealed numerous further titles which are no longer in existence. In addition, the editors have evaluated all the book invoices and receipts from booksellers and bookbinders kept in the Goethe- und Schiller Archiv. Besides the approximately 2,200 titles from the reconstruction of Nietzsche's library, the volume also contains a catalogue of all traces of Nietzsche's reading (approx. 20,000) such as notes, underlinings and dog-ears. The work is further enhanced with numerous facsimile reproductions together with philosophical, historical and bibliographical introductions, and thus provides an indispensable tool for any future research into Nietzsche and his works.
