This is a detailed study of understanding in a second language,
related to the actual lives of minority workers. The focus is on
everyday interactions between these workers and the bureaucrats of
the society in which they are now resident. It provides an
important contribution to the debate about the function of language
as a social practice, adding a new perspective to the
psycholinguistic and experimental paradigms, currently existing in
second language acquisition research.

Translated by Elizabeth S. Haldane and G.R.T. Ross. Edited with an
Introduction by Enrique Chavez-Arvizo. Rene Descartes (1569-1650),
the 'father' of modern philosophy, is without doubt one of the
greatest thinkers in history: his genius lies at the core of our
contemporary intellectual identity. Breaking with the conventions
of his own time and suffering persecution by the Church as a
consequence, Descartes in his writings - most of which are
philosophical classics - attempted to answer the central questions
surrounding the self, God, free-will and knowledge, using the
science of thought as opposed to received wisdom based on the
tenets of faith. This edition, the most comprehensive one-volume
selection of Descartes' works available in English, includes his
great essay, Discourse on Method.

'It is some years now since I realized how many false opinions I
had accepted as true from childhood onwards...I saw that at some
stage in my life the whole structure would have to be utterly
demolished' In Descartes's Meditations, one of the key texts of
Western philosophy, the thinker rejects all his former beliefs in
the quest for new certainties. Discovering his own existence as a
thinking entity in the very exercise of doubt, he goes on to prove
the existence of God, who guarantees his clear and distinct ideas
as a means of access to the truth. He develops new conceptions of
body and mind, capable of serving as foundations for the new
science of nature. Subsequent philosophy has grappled with
Descartes's legacy, questioning many of its conclusions and even
his basic approach, but his arguments set the agenda for many of
the greatest philosophical thinkers, and their fascination endures.
This new translation includes the Third and Fourth Objections and
Replies in full, and a selection from the rest of these exchanges
with Descartes's contemporaries that helped to expound his
philosophy. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's

'Those most capable of being moved by passion are those capable of
tasting the most sweetness in this life.' Descartes is most often
thought of as introducing a total separation of mind and body. But
he also acknowledged the intimate union between them, and in his
later writings he concentrated on understanding this aspect of
human nature. The Passions of the Soul is his greatest contribution
to this debate. It contains a profound discussion of the workings
of the emotions and of their place in human life - a subject that
increasingly engages the interest of philosophers and intellectual
and cultural historians. It also sets out a view of ethics that has
been seen as a radical reorientation of moral philosophy. This
volume also includes both sides of the correspondence with Princess
Elisabeth of Bohemia, one of Descartes's keenest disciples and
shrewdest critics, which played a crucial role in the genesis of
The Passions, as well as the first part of The Principles of
Philosophy, which sets out the key positions of Descartes's
philosophical system. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford

Among the strengths of this edition are reliable, accessible
translations, useful editorial materials, and a straightforward
presentation of the Objections and Replies, including the
Objections from Caterus, Arnauld, and Hobbes, and Descartes'
Replies, in their entirety. 'The Letter Serving as a Reply to
Gassendi' - in which several of Descartes' associates present
Gassendi's best arguments and Descartes' replies - conveys the
highlights and important issues of their notoriously extended
exchange. Roger Ariew's illuminating general Introduction discusses
the Meditations and the intellectual environment surrounding its
reception. Also included are a bibliography and chronology.

This bilingual edition of Descartes' Meditations on First
Philosophy is aimed both specifically at serious students and
professors of philosophy, and generally at anyone motivated by a
strong philosophical interest.
This volume preserves the format in which Discourse on Method was
originally published: as a preface to Descartes's writings on
optics, geometry, and meteorology. In his introduction, Olscamp
discusses the value of reading the Discourse alongside these three
works, which sheds new light on Descartes's method. Includes an
updated bibliography. A reprint of the Bobbs-Merrill edition of
1965.

This is an English translation of Descartes' seminal discourse,
with an original essay by Richard Kennington. This text is designed
to provide the student with a close translation, notes, and a
glossary of key terms, facilitating access to ideas as they
originally were presented and helping to make the translator's work
transparent.
Focus Philosophical Library translations are close to and are
non-interpretative of the original text, with the notes and a
glossary intending to provide the reader with some sense of the
terms and the concepts as they were understood by Decartes'
immediate audience.
The Focus Philosophical Library publishes clear, faithful
editions enabling access for modern students to the essential ideas
and wisdom of the world's greatest thinkers.
A superb text for teaching the philosophy of Descartes, this volume
includes all his major works in their entirety, important
selections from his lesser known writings, and key selections from
his philosophical correspondence. The result is an anthology that
enables the reader to understand the development of Descartes's
thought over his lifetime. Includes a biographical Introduction,
chronology, bibliography, and index.
Here is a brilliant new translation of Descartes's Meditations, one
of the most influential books in the history of Western philosophy,
including the full texts of the Third and Fourth Objections and
Replies, and a selection from the other exchanges. Discovering his
own existence as a thinking
entity in the very exercise of doubt--in the famous formulation
cogito, ergo sum--Descartes goes on to develop new conceptions of
body and mind, capable of serving as foundations for a new science
of nature. Subsequent philosophy has grappled with Descartes's
ideas, but his arguments set the agenda
for many of the greatest philosophical thinkers, and their
fascination endures. This new translation pays particular attention
to Descartes's terminology and style, with its elaborate but
beautifully lucid syntax, careful balancing, and rhetorical
signposting. The wide-ranging introduction places
the work in the intellectual context of the time and discusses the
nature of the work, its structure, key issues, and its influence on
later thinkers. The book also includes notes, an up-to-date
bibliography, a chronology, and an index.
Descartes' Discourse on Method has long been regarded as a seminal contribution to modern philosophy. We can now see that it is also one of the key texts in the ‘scientific revolution’ of the seventeenth century. René Descartes (1596–1650) did major research in optics, geometry, astronomy and physiology, although (partly because Galileo had just been condemned by the Inquisition) he published nothing until he was over forty. The Discourse forms the preface to his first collection of scientific papers (1637), sketching in a new method based on hypothesis and deduction which was soon to replace traditional techniques derived from Aristotle. This edition puts the work in context, by including extracts from Descartes’ correspondence, the Rules for Guiding One’s Intelligence and from The World – a posthumously published summary of his physical theories, which at one point in its chequered life had to be rescued from the river Seine. The age of Newton marks one of the great turning points in intellectual history; Descartes has a key place at its very heart. A companion volume Meditations and other Metaphysical Writings by Descartes is also published in Penguin Classics.
