In this volume of the African Development Perspectives Yearbook series, the Research Group on African Development Perspectives investigates the impact of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) on economic reform processes in Africa. The analysis is structured in such a way so as to reflect the opportunities and dangers of policy reversals in the face of the GFC. The impact of the crisis on different types and forms of governance in the region is considered. The first question is therefore which macro-economic policy instruments have to be applied in order to overcome the crisis and to continue with sustainable development. The second question is how the GFC has affected Africa's external economic relations and if the path of opening up to the world markets is to be continued. The third question raised is how the crisis has affected social cohesion, impacted poverty alleviation strategies and the achievement of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). All these questions are discussed in the various contributions which comprise general studies and country case studies. This book is An Analysis of Impact of Official Development Assistance in Nigeria. In about forty years of oil production, Nigeria has earned over $400 billion from oil. With its large reserves of human and natural resources, Nigeria has the potential to build a prosperous economy, reduce poverty significantly, and provide the health, education, and infrastructure services its population needs. However, available evidence indicates that these resources have not been equitably used for the welfare of the populace. Hence, associated with Nigeria development is huge inequalities. These inequalities have widened, as in many African countries with the economic crisis of the 80s. The richest are more enriched, while the proportion of people living below the poverty line has increased with the disappearance of the middle class who could mediate between the two extremes. Moreover, the industrial base is not sufficiently developed to enable the country to have significant tax revenues. So a shift in the allocation of public spending for the poor to reduce the welfare gap that separates the rich from the poor becomes imperative. Hence, for effective policies formulation and implementation on redistribution there is a need for book like this on public expenditure in Nigeria.

The book assessed the effect of fertilizer use on rice production and its efficiency using Edo State in Nigeria, as case study. The book document a research study that involved the collection and analysis of useful data from representative rice farmers. The relevant collected data were analyzed using translog stochastic frontier model, the logistic regression model and Kwakwani Index of Progressivity. The findings from this study will be of interest to policy makers, academics and development economics. Acquisition of this book is also important for the researchers who are interested in carrying out their research in developing country such as Nigeria.
