Is the transnational coporation (TNC) an engine of growth capable
of eliminating international economic inequalities or a major
obstacle to development through a massive drain of surplus to
advanced countries? This book presents five different perspectives
on the role of TNCs: Neo-Classical Global Reach Neo-Imperialist
Neo-Fundamentalist Internationalization of capital The author looks
at their effect on local labour and capital, and considers the
future prospects for TNC involvement in the Third World. The book
provides an excellent comparative analysis of TNCs and will appeal
to students in development studies and international economics.
The emergence of voluntary corporate codes of conduct since the
early 1990s is both a manifestation of and a response to the
process of globalization. They have been part of a more general
shift away from state regulation of transnational corporations
towards and emphasis on corporate self-regulation in the areas of
labour and environmental standards and human rights. This work
provides a critical perspective on the growth and significance of
corporate codes with a particular focus on working conditions and
labour rights. It brings together work by academics, practitioners
and activists.
The impact of globalisation on the environment is a much debated issue, reflected in the growing literature on the effects of trade liberalization, the activities of transnational corporations and international finance. Using case-studies from Latin America, this book sets out these debates and presents new empirical evidence on key questions.

Can economic globalization and environmental protection co-exist or
does globalization inevitably lead to environmental degradation?
How have firms in Europe responded to increased environmental
regulation in the face of growing international competition,
particularly from newly industrializing and transition economies?
This book attempts to answer these questions using case studies of
three pollution-intensive industries: iron and steel, leather
tanning, and fertilizers. Based on in-depth interviews with
managers and regulators in Western and Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa
and Latin America, the book illustrates the variety of responses to
the conflicting pressures of globalization and environmental
protection at corporate and industry levels. It also considers the
impact which shifting competitive advantage has on the environment
in newly industrialized countries and transition economies.
Environmental managers and regulators of national and international
environmental agencies will find Environmental Regulation in the
New Global Economy of great interest, as will, academics and
students of economics, environmental management, business studies,
geography and international relations.

China's growing economic involvement in Sub-Saharan Africa and
Latin America has been a source of major controversy. The official
Chinese position maintains that the growth of bilateral relations
is of mutual benefit and provides a good example of South-South
cooperation. Critics on the other hand see the economic relations
between China and other developing countries as highly unequal with
most of the benefits accruing to China and a few local elites. They
also point to negative socio-economic, political, and environmental
consequences. How China is Reshaping the Global Economy:
Development Impacts in Africa and Latin-America throws more light
on these controversies through a comparative study of China's
impact on the two regions. It looks not just at bilateral relations
between China and the two regions but also analyses the changes in
the global economy brought about as a result of the shift in
economic activity from North America and Western Europe to Asia.
How China is Reshaping the Global Economy looks at the factors
which led to rapid economic growth in China and the way in which
this has affected global manufacturing, commodity markets, the
international presence of Chinese companies, and financial glows.
It examines the different forms of Chinese economic involvement in
Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, the main drivers, and
economic, social, political, and environmental consequences. It
ends with a comparison of the two regions that highlights the
importance of different histories and political and institutional
contexts in determining the impacts of China.
