This book is a unique scholarly attempt to examine Don Quixote from
multiple angles to see how the re-accentuation of the world's
greatest literary hero takes place in film, theatre, and
literature. To accomplish this task, eighteen scholars from the
USA, Canada, Spain, and Great Britain have come together, and each
of them has brought his/her unique perspective to the subject. For
the first time, Don Quixote is discussed from the point of
re-accentuation, i.e. having in mind one of the key Bakhtinian
concepts that will serve as a theoretical framework. A primary
objective was therefore to articulate, relying on the concept of
re-accentuation, that the history of the novel has benefited
enormously from the re-accentuation of Don Quixote helping us to
shape countless iconic novels from the eighteenth century, and to
see how Cervantes's title character has been reinterpreted to suit
the needs of a variety of cultures across time and space.
Art and Answerability, the work that would become Mikhail Bakhtin's
literary manifesto, was first published in Den Iskusstva (The Day
of the Art) on September 13, 1919. Mikhail Bakhtin's Heritage in
Literature, Arts, and Psychology: Art and Answerability celebrates
one hundred years of Bakhtin's heritage. This unique book examines
the heritage of Mikhail Bakhtin in a variety of disciplines. To
articulate the enduring relevance and heritage of the varied works
of Bakhtin, sixteen scholars from eight countries have come
together, and each has brought his/her unique perspective to the
subject. Bakhtin's work in aesthetics, moral philosophy,
linguistics, psychology, carnival, cognition, contextualism, and
the history and theory of the novel are present here, as understood
by a wide variety of distinguished scholars.

The late medieval masterpiece Celestina has long been the focus
of controversy, over both its authorship and the apparent
contradictions and inconsistencies within its plot. Scholars trace
the publication of Celestina to 1499, when Fernando de Rojas
supposedly discovered the first act and completed the remainder of
the drama within a two-week period. The plot centers on the
ill-fated love of Calisto and Melibea and the fascinating character
of the old bawd, Celestina. Scholars disagree about how to
interpret the meeting of the two lovers in the first scene, when
they share an unusual conversation that is incongruous with their
comportment in the remainder of the work. Ricardo Castells seeks to
resolve this and other seeming contradictions by tracing the
oneiric, phantasmal, and melancholic traditions of the Renaissance
and their effect on the composition of Celestina. Castells explores
the European cultural and literary tradition--works of both fiction
and nonfiction that would have been available to Rojas--to discover
theoretical approaches to the physiology of lovesickness and its
accompanying dreams and visions. He employs the themes of love,
medicine, and dreams in these works to explain the seemingly
illogical progression of the play's action and the ultimately
detrimental effects of melancholy, lovesickness, and sensual
contamination on the protagonist, Calisto. In so doing, Castells
places Celestina within its appropriate cultural and historical
context, enriching our perception not only of the text itself but
also of the traditions that helped to produce it.
Fernando de Rojas' Celestina opens with a conversation between
Calisto and Melibea which has puzzled literary scholars. The author
of this study supports the view that the scene represents Calisto's
dream about his beloved Melibea and examines subsequent works to
reach a greater understanding.
