Ann Preston (1813-1872) is best known as a medical pioneer and nineteenth century Quaker activist. The immediate cause of the publication of Cousin Ann's Stories for Children (1849) was most likely the then recent 27 hour escape at the end of March, 1849, of Henry "Box" Brown, a Richmond slave who left his family and escaped north in a small wooden crate. Though Cousin Ann's Stories for Children is one hundred and sixty-two years old, it still speaks to contemporary concerns and moral perspectives. In its address "To My Little Readers" she explains, "I thought I would write a little book, and that would be a good way to speak with you, though I am far away." What Cousin Ann speaks of is practicing temperance, healthy diet and avoidance of tobacco, to treasure freedom and abhor slavery, the bounty and beauty of God's creation, the need to treat others generously and honestly.

Reproductive Health Care for Women and Babies (Hardcover): Benjamin P. Sachs, Richard Beard, Emile Papiernik, Cristine Russell Reproductive Health Care for Women and Babies (Hardcover)

A recent Harris Poll revealed some disturbing aspects of the current state of health care provision for women and children. The poll dealt with issues as diverse as clincial examinations and communication between women and their doctors. Such issues, long ignored or under-appreciated by medical researchers, clinicians, and public policy makers, are increasingly receiving attention, not only from public health experts, but also from politicians, pressure groups, and the media. Reproductive Health Care for Women and Babies addresses all the medical and societal aspects of health care that go to form public health policy for women. The editors have assembled an international team of contributors who provide the reader with a truly global picture of the issues involved. These features combine to provide a much better understanding of the health care needs of women. Doctors will be able to take a broader view of their role, beyond the traditional one of diagnosis and treatment, and allow to communicate more effectively their individual and collective views. Such a reorientation is essential if physicians are to assume their proper role at the centre of the formation of public health policy. For anybody involved in providing health care for women and children this book is essential reading.

'Read this book' Alastair Campbell 'A really wonderful book' Nigella Lawson via Twitter In 1975 Richard Beard was sent away to boarding school. So were Boris Johnson and David Cameron. He didn't enjoy it. But the first and most important lesson was not to let that show. A public school education has long been accepted in Britain as a preparation for leadership, but being separated from your parents at a young age is traumatic. What sort of adult does it mould? Tackling debates about privilege head-on, Sad Little Men reveals what happens when you put a succession of men from boarding schools into positions of influence, including at 10 Downing Street, and asks the question: is this really who we want in charge? 'The most important book I've read this year' Adam Rutherford

*WINNER OF THE PEN ACKERLEY PRIZE 2018* My younger brother's name is Nicholas Beard. He was nine years old, and I was with him in the water when he drowned. Life changes in an instant. On a family holiday in Cornwall in 1978, Richard and Nicholas are in the sea, jumping the waves. Suddenly and inexplicably Nicholas is out of his depth and then, shockingly, so is Richard. Only one of the brothers returns to the shore. Richard does not attend Nicholas's funeral and afterwards the family return to Cornwall to continue the holiday. Soon they stop speaking of that day at the beach altogether. Years later, haunted by grief, Richard sets out to piece together the story. Who was Nicholas? What really happened that day? And why did the family never speak of it again? SHORTLISTED FOR THE RATHBONES FOLIO PRIZE 2018 SHORTLISTED FOR THE JAMES TAIT BLACK PRIZE 2018 'This captivating book, both heart-rending and jaw-dropping, unfolds like a detective story' Daily Mail 'A memoir of real truth and heartbreaking emotional heft' Sunday Times
