Jihadist Insurgent Movements (Paperback): Paul B. Rich, Richard Burchill Jihadist Insurgent Movements (Paperback)
Paul B. Rich, Richard Burchill
R1,412 Discovery Miles 14 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This path-breaking collection of papers examines the phenomenon of jihadist insurgent movements in the Middle East and North, East and West Africa. It argues that military and strategic analysts have paid insufficient attention to the phenomenon of jihadism in insurgent movements, partly due to a failure to take the role of religion sufficiently seriously in the ideological mobilisation of recruits by guerrilla movements stretching back to the era of "national liberation" after World War Two. Several essays in the collection examine Al Qaeda and ISIL as military as well as political movements while others assess Boko Haram in West Africa, Al Shabaab in Somalia and jihadist movements in Libya. Additionally, some authors discuss the recruitment of foreign fighters and the longer-term terrorist threat posed by the existence of jihadist movements to security and ethnic relations in Europe Overall, this volume fills an important niche between studies that look at Islamic fundamentalism and "global jihad" at the international level and micro studies that look at movements locally. It poses the question whether jihadist insurgencies are serious revolutionary threats to global political stability or whether, like Soviet Russia after its initial revolutionary phase of the 1920s, they can be ultimately contained by the global political order. The volume sees these movements as continuing to evolve dynamically over the next few years suggesting that, even if ISIL is defeated, the movement that brought it into being will still exist and very probably morph into new movements. Jihadist Insurgent Movements was originally published as a special issue of Small Wars & Insurgencies.

Democracy and International Law (Hardcover, New Ed): Richard Burchill Democracy and International Law (Hardcover, New Ed)
Richard Burchill
R2,876 Discovery Miles 28 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

During the 1990s, the international system underwent major changes with the end of the ideological divide that was the Cold War. At this time, the international system experienced a major movement with the widespread adoption of democratic systems leading academics to speak of an international victory for democracy, a third wave of democratisation and an emerging right to democratic governance. Within a short period of time, international law went from a position of supposed ideological neutrality to actively supporting the idea and practice of democracy. Concerns for democracy have been expressed in relation to membership to international organisations, international human rights law, trade conditionality, the process of recognition, multiple levels of governance, election monitoring and as a justification for the use of force. The essays in this collection will provide the reader with the key works in the debate about democracy in international law, demonstrating the wide influence democracy has had, the controversies that surround it and its importance for international law and relations.

Constructions of Terrorism - An Interdisciplinary Approach to Research and Policy (Paperback): Michael Stohl, Richard Burchill,... Constructions of Terrorism - An Interdisciplinary Approach to Research and Policy (Paperback)
Michael Stohl, Richard Burchill, Scott Howard Englund
R852 R655 Discovery Miles 6 550 Save R197 (23%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Discussions about the meaning of terrorism are enduring in everyday language, government policy, news reporting, and international politics. And disagreements about both the definition and the class of violent events that constitute terrorism contribute to the difficulty of formulating effective responses aimed at the prevention and management of the threat of terrorism and the development of counterterrorism policies. Constructions of Terrorism collects works from the leading scholars on terrorism from an array of disciplines-including communication, political science, sociology, global studies, and public policy-to establish appropriate research frameworks for understanding how we construct our understanding of terrorism.

International Conflict and Security Law - Essays in Memory of Hilaire McCoubrey (Hardcover, New): Richard Burchill, Nigel D.... International Conflict and Security Law - Essays in Memory of Hilaire McCoubrey (Hardcover, New)
Richard Burchill, Nigel D. White, Justin Morris
R3,235 Discovery Miles 32 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Hilaire McCoubrey wrote extensively in the area of armed conflict law, and on the issues of collective security law and the law relating to arms control. Although he died at the early age of 46 in 2000 he had contributed significantly to the separate study of these areas, but also to the idea of studying the issues as a whole subject. The collection covers difficult and controversial issues in the area of conflict and security law. The contributors, drawn both from academe and practice, provide expert analysis of many aspects of the law governing armed conflict and collective security. As well as providing a fitting tribute to the main aspects of Hilaire's contribution to knowledge, the volume provides a coherent reconsideration and development of key aspects of conflict and security law at a time when that law is being applied, breached, debated or reformed on almost a daily basis.

Eurasia on the Edge - Managing Complexity (Hardcover): Piotr Dutkiewicz Eurasia on the Edge - Managing Complexity (Hardcover)
Piotr Dutkiewicz; Edited by Richard Sakwa; Contributions by Fyodor Lukyanov, Viktoria Akchurina, Martin Greiger, …
R4,018 Discovery Miles 40 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Eurasia, wherever one draws the boundaries, is very much at the centre of discussions about today's world. Security across Eurasia is a global concern and has been subject to a range of discussions and debate. However, the current tensions over security and world order, with the growing challenges from Eurasia and Asia, require more intense scrutiny. The goals of the book are to explore the challenges facing the region and to assess how to achieve economic, social and political stability in the Eurasian core. The book's chapters are written by prominent experts in the field, and together contribute to the continuing debate by providing policy advice for managing crises in the region. Conflicts inevitably arise in the Eurasian space as global powers, regional powers and individual states jockey for positions and influence. These conflicts need not reach a crisis state provided the foundations of conflict, and the surrounding frameworks, can be better understood. To do this, it is necessary to examine the issue of security in Eurasia from a multi-dimensional perspective that challenges any and all assumptions about Eurasia and global order. This volume has two overarching goals. The first is to come to a better understanding of key security threats in the Eurasian region from a multi-dimensional - social, political, economic and institutional - perspective. The second is to discuss policies directed to increase mutual security in and around the Eurasian core. Although the crisis of security affects the whole continent, the area covered by the former Soviet Union and its neighborhood is at the epicenter of the current crisis. On the one side, the Atlantic community is consolidating and extending. On the other, various 'greater Asia' ideas are in the making. All of Eurasia is in danger of becoming an extended shatter zone, a vast new, shaky 'borderland' trapped between two great systems of power and world order.
