What follows here, just a brief insight into Pain and Purpose in
the Pacific. This book did not begin with the idea of a chronology
of the battles of the Pacific War, although an overview is
included. But instead it was intended to be a brief account of the
battles on Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa as I retrace the travels of
one Marine from the farmland of Minnesota to Japan and back. Carl
J. Johnson spent 30 months in the Pacific. Four of those months
were in bitter combat on the islands of Saipan, Tinian, and
Okinawa. He is my uncle. I have been blessed to travel, & to
spend time at many of the places he traveled during World War II.
My travels didn't stop there.
As a Continental Airlines pilot based in Guam, now retired and
having lived on Saipan, I have had the opportunity over a seven
year period to visit other islands that were the scene of horrific
battles of World War II. In addition to Saipan, Tinian, and
Okinawa, I will mention a few of them. Included are Guam where I
was based during the closing years of my airline career; also
Belau, which is Palau, and includes Peleliu. Included too in this
book are Iwo Jima, Corregidor and the Philippines. In my travels
beyond Hawaii and Pearl Harbor, which was my introduction into the
Pacific, were Yap, and Truk, which is Chuuk, and Pohnpei in the
Carolines. And I've spent time in Japan.
During my time in the Pacific, I have been presented with the
opportunity to speak with several of the veterans of the Pacific
War. Doing so has in some cases allowed me in some small way to
understand a sense of the hell they had to suffer through. Included
in this report are a few of their stories, as well as stories from
some of the people of the islands who in one way or another were
involved in the conflict.
It is with a depth of gratitude that I acknowledge the Military
Historical Tours of Alexandria, Virginia for allowing me to be a
part of their tours to the islands of Iwo Jima, and Okinawa, as
well as Guam, Tinian and Saipan. I appreciate this organization,
dedicated to preserving the memories of the war, and to the
honoring of the military personnel who were there at the time.
While living on either Guam or Saipan I also was able to visit on
my own most of the islands mentioned on this page. But it was the
Military Historical Tours, and it's President USMC Colonel Warren
Wiedhahn ([email protected]) that made it possible for me to visit
Iwo Jima. They allowed me to join them once a year for 4
consecutive years. I have since returned a 5th time in March of
2010. It was through this great organization that over a 7 year
period (while living on both Guam and Saipan in the Marianas
Islands), I was able to meet most of the WWII veterans mentioned
here; and these aging veterans of the War in the Pacific whom I
have met, have touched my heart. In addition to my uncle, this book
is for them too.
The book presents a unified treatment of integer programming and network models with topics ranging from exact and heuristic algorithms to network flows, traveling salesman tours, and traffic assignment problems. While the emphasis of the book is on models and applications, the most important methods and algorithms are described in detail and illustrated by numerical examples. The formulations and the discussion of a large variety of models provides insight into their structures that allows the user to better evaluate the solutions to the problems.
The purpose of this book is to provide readers with an introduction
to the very active field of integer programming and network models.
The idea is to cover the main parts of the field without being too
detailed or too technical. As a matter of fact, we found it
somewhat surprising that most--especially newer---books are
strongly algorithmically oriented. In contrast, the main emphasis
of this book is on models rather than methods. This focus expresses
our view that methods are tools to solve actual problems and not
ends in themselves. As such, graduate (and with some omissions,
undergraduate) students may find this book helpful in their studies
as will practitioners who would like to get acquainted with a field
or use this text as a refresher. This premise has resulted in a
coverage that omits material that is standard fare in other books,
whereas it covers topics that are only infrequently found
elsewhere. There are some, yet relatively few, prerequisites for
the reader. Most material that is required for the understanding of
more than one chapter is presented in one of the four chapters of
the introductory part, which reviews the main results in linear
programming, the analysis of algorithms, graphs and networks, and
dynamic programming, respectively. Readers who are familiar with
the issues involved can safely skip that part. The three main parts
of the book rely on intuitive reasoning and examples, whenever
practical, instead of theorems and proofs.
In 1968, Carl Wieburg was sent to Viet Nam as a Second Lieutenant
in the U.S. Army, Infantry. However, upon arriving in Viet Nam, his
orders were changed and he was assigned to work as an Intelligence
Officer in charge of a squad of specially trained mercenaries in a
secret, CIA run operation that the U.S. Government called, "The
PHOENIX Program." He was placed in Tuy An District and was told
that he was to set up an information gathering agency. He was given
money to pay informants, whose job it was to go out through the
District and gather information on the Communist elements working
within its boundaries. These Communist elements were called VCI by
the CIA. After he had gathered sufficient information in regard to
specific VCI he was to send the mercenaries out into the jungle to
eliminate or neutralize them. The problem with this program was
that these VCI were mostly civilians, not military. So, Lieutenant
Wieburg, an Army officer, was told he was to order mercenary
soldiers to eliminate or neutralize civilians. This book chronicles
his struggles, his achievements, and his failures, during, "A Year
of Trying to Help."

The Summer of 1936 was to be very important for Hitler's Third
Reich. There would be hundreds of thousands of visitors, from all
over the world, coming to Berlin for the Olympics. The Nazis were
determined to show the "New Germany" in the best possible light.
America's Colonel Charles Lindbergh, the "Lone Eagle," who, in
1927, became the first man to fly solo from New York to Paris, was
arriving on July 22nd for a 10 day visit. A few weeks prior to his
arrival, a plot was discovered. A major crime ring was being paid a
great deal of money to assassinate him during his visit. This was
Charles Lindbergh's first trip to Germany. What reason could anyone
in Berlin have for wanting him dead? That was the question that
General Hermann Wilhelm Goering, the Commander-in-Chief of the
Luftwaffe, Germany's Air Force, and the one who had extended the
invitation to Colonel Lindbergh, wanted answered. He turned to Karl
von Ernst, a Private Investigator and former Chief Inspector in the
Berlin Police, to find the answer and stop the attempt on
Lindbergh's life. Karl had to unravel the plot which included an
exiled Nazi group working out of Prague, Serenity, Berlin's largest
crime ring and a mystery man, the one who initiated the plan to
kill Lindbergh. He had to do this while contending with Reinhard
Heydrich, of the SS, the Nazi Party's infamous police force, and
one of General Goering's chief rivals for power within the Nazi
hierarchy. Karl had to fight a two front battle, plotters on one
side, the SS on the other.

Christ came to set God's people free from disobedience, disease,
and death -- and each of the miracle events was not a
"faith-healing" but rather a battle won, in which Jesus provided a
cure from something for something. That's the compelling theme of
this fascinating study of ten miracle stories from the gospel of
Mark featured in Cycle B of the Revised Common Lectionary. Whether
you're a busy pastor, church school teacher, discussion leader, or
just an interested Bible student, "There Are Demons In The Sea"
offers valuable and superbly organized background information --
Hoefler's scholarship, perceptive insight, and potent illustrative
material make this volume an invaluable aid to preaching
preparation or scriptural study.
Chapter titles include:
- The Gordian Knot -- Mark 1:21-28
- The Miracle Of Forgiveness -- Mark 2:1-12
- There Are Demons In The Sea -- Mark 4:35-41
- The Good Grocer -- Mark 6:30-44
- An Exile Of Silence Set Free -- Mark 7:31-37
... and more
Richard Carl Hoefler is a former Dean of the Chapel and Professor
