From the Preface: (...) The book is addressed to students on various levels, to mathematicians, scientists, engineers. It does not pretend to make the subject easy by glossing over difficulties, but rather tries to help the genuinely interested reader by throwing light on the interconnections and purposes of the whole. Instead of obstructing the access to the wealth of facts by lengthy discussions of a fundamental nature we have sometimes postponed such discussions to appendices in the various chapters. Numerous examples and problems are given at the end of various chapters. Some are challenging, some are even difficult; most of them supplement the material in the text.

Hilbert kann man mit Fug und Recht als den letzten Mathematiker bezeichnen, der in allen Gebieten seiner Wissenschaft zu Hause war und in den verschiedensten Bereichen der Mathematik grundlegende neue Erkenntnisse gewann. The lecture, emphasizing the need for national and international scien tific cooperation concerned mainly the ways in which in the present era the Unites States are trying to cope with a number of basic problems in conducting research on a broad front. Some of these all pervading problems are: How can the essentially individualistic character of productive creation be reconciled with the ever increasing compelling need to cooperate in teams during rigid office hours? - How can one keep the extremely expensive machinerie such as Electronic computers, Reactors, Synchrotrons, Research Ships etc. in their roles as tools, not as masters of research activities? - What is the true relationship between "pure" and "applied" research? - What should the interaction between research and teaching be? - Above all: What can be done about the overriding manpowerproblem? - How does one reconcile the need for freedom with that for planning, the material depen dence with intellectual independence? Against an historical background the lecture indicated how during the time since the last war these problems are beeing attacked in the United States by various agencies which grew organically, not in a rigid precon ceived pattern. The role of seemingly military sponsors of research and training was discussed, in particular the famous Office of Naval Research and the Atomic Energy Commission; the ever increasing importance of the National Science Foundation was described. Kleins gruppen theoretischer Aufbau der Geometrie, wie er ihn zuerst 1872 in seinem "Erlanger Programm" entworfen und dann 1893 in seiner "Einleitung in die hohere Geometrie" naher ausgefuhrt hat, ist fur die Weiterentwicklung der Geometrie, ja auch der Physik heute so wichtig und lebendig als je. So wird vielleicht manchem eine Neuausgabe dieser Vorlesungen willkommen sein. Ich habe, um den personlichen Eindruck von Kleins Werk nicht zu verwischen, an dem fruheren "ersten Band" nur wenig geandert und nur wenig hinzugefugt. Hingegen habe ich den damit nur lose zusammenhangenden "zweiten Band," der eine Ein fuhrung in die Lehre von den stetigen und unstetigen Gruppen enthielt und eine vollige Umarbeitung notig gemacht hatte, weggelassen. An seine Stelle ist der "dritte Hauptteil" des vorliegenden Buches getreten, in dem einige neuere geometrische Untersuchungen dargestellt werden. Dabei haben mich mehrere befreundete Geometer unterstutzt: die Teile II und IV stammen von J. Radon (Erlangen), III im wesentlichen von E. Artin und V von o. Schreier (Hamburg).
