This is a reprint of the original 1845 book about the scriptural
legitimacy of slavery. ""Domestic Slavery"" originated in the
nineteenth century as a literary debate between two Baptist leaders
over the Bible's teachings on slavery. The chapters were originally
letters published in a Baptist newspaper in Boston, Massachusetts.
Southern pastor Richard Fuller and Northern educator Francis
Wayland were each able defenders of their respective positions.
These men were also good friends who believed that a difference of
opinion about slavery should not necessitate a breaking of
Christian fellowship. Unfortunately, these two Baptists leaders
proved naive in this regard. Just weeks after the publication of
the correspondence in book form, Fuller's Southern Baptist
Convention broke away from the larger Baptist denomination and
formed a new ecclesiastical body. A number of issues factored into
the division, though the slavery debate was what ultimately led to
the creation of a separate Baptist denomination in the South.
Historians of Southern religion consider ""Domestic Slavery"" to be
one of the major contributions to the nineteenth-century debate
over the peculiar institution. This critical edition of ""Domestic
Slavery"", which includes annotations and an appendix of related
documents, represents the first reprint of this important work to
be published since the mid-nineteenth century. Scholars of Southern
culture and religious history will benefit from a close examination
of what was undoubtedly the most significant Baptist contribution
to the slavery debate in the years leading to the Civil War.
From the President of the Research Society on Alcoholism On behalf
of the Research Society on Alcoholism, I am pleased to introduce
this thirteenth volume of Recent Developments in Alcoholism about
alcohol and violence. Current concepts are presented in
well-organized sections that - cus on epidemiology, neurobiology,
psychology, and family issues. It is - coming increasingly clear
that age, gender, socioeconomic circumstances, and genetics affect
aggressive behavior and vulnerability to alcoholism. This v- ume
contains up-to-date discussions of these issues. Indeed, the
information presented here will help all alcohol researchers to
identify biological and social factors that contribute to the
comorbidity of alcoholism and aggression. The editors and associate
editors should be congratulated for bringing toge- er such
important information. This volume will be a valuable resource for
investigators and therapists alike. Ivan Diamond M. D. , Ph. D.
President, Research Society on Alcoholism From the President of the
American Society of Addiction Medicine The American Society of
Addiction Medicine is honored to continue its - sponsorship with
the Research Society on Alcoholism of Recent Developmen ts in
Alcoholism. The topic of alcohol and violence is a particularly
timely one, given the growing number of studies that are examining
the relationship between the two. These studies are consistent with
the hypothesis that al- hol can increase aggression and contribute
to both domestic and criminal violence. Intoxicating blood levels
of alcohol have been found to be especially prevalent in those
injured in fights and assaults.
A unique and extensive record of 1,771 Imperial Japanese Army
Generals involved in the Manchuria, China and the Pacific Wars
during the period 1926 to 1945. This includes those involved with
both the military and bureaucratic aspects of running an army. 237
photographs of Generals are included. Information contains details
of commands, locations, campaigns and war crimes. Personal details,
voiced opinions and even details of their swords are included when
located. Additional sections include a table of the Military
Command structure at the time of the Japanese surrender in August
and September 1945 plus lists of the Commanders of General Armies,
Area Armies, Armies, Divisions and Independent Mixed Brigades at
that time. Senior Imperial Japanese Army officers are normally
believed to have served with unquestioning obedience to their
superiors but this work shows that was not always true. This book
forms an essential reference for any historian or collector
interested in the Japanese war machine.
Over 1400 serving Japanese Admirals (Flag Officers) from 1926-45
reign are included in this work. The book concentrates on the
service histories of those officers active during the 1936-45
period of Japanese expansion and military actions in Manchuria,
China, the Far East and the Pacific. This is an essential reference
for any historian, student or collector interested in the IJN
during this period.
This text looks at how university teachers can teach their students
learning strategies. It describes how teachers can teach each
strategy in their normal classes and encourage students to use the
strategies in their own study time. It includes case studies.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Second International
Workshop on Mobile Entity Localization and Tracking in GPS-less
Environments (MELT 2009), held in Orlando, Florida on September 30,
2009 in conjunction with the 11th International Conference on
Ubiquitous Computing (Ubicomp 2009). MELT provides a forum for the
presentation of state-of-the-art technologies in mobile
localization and tracking and novel applications of location-based
s- vices. MELT 2009 continued the success of the ?rst workshop in
the series (MELT 2008), which was held is San Francisco, California
on September 19, 2008 in conjunction with Mobicom.
Location-awareness is a key component for achieving
context-awareness. - cent years have witnessed an increasing trend
towards location-based services and applications. In most cases,
however, location information is limited by the accessibility to
GPS, which is unavailable for indoor or underground fac- ities and
unreliable in urban environments. Much research has been done, in
both the sensor network community and the ubiquitous computing
community, to provide techniques for localization and tracking in
GPS-less environments. Novel applications based on ad-hoc
localization and real-time tracking of - bile entities are growing
as a result of these technologies. MELT brings together leaders
from both the academic and industrial research communities to
discuss challenging and open problems, to evaluate pros and cons of
various approaches, to bridge the gap between theory and
applications, and to envision new research opportunities.
