Flood Hazard Identification And Mitigation In Semi- And Arid Environments (Hardcover): Richard H. French, Julianne J. Miller Flood Hazard Identification And Mitigation In Semi- And Arid Environments (Hardcover)
Richard H. French, Julianne J. Miller
R2,317 Discovery Miles 23 170 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Alluvial fans are ubiquitous geomorphological features that occur throughout the world, regardless of climate, at the front of mountains as the result of erosion and deposition. They are more prominent in semi- and arid climates simply because of the lack of vegetative cover that masks their fan shapes in more humid areas. From both engineering and geological viewpoints, alluvial fans present particular fluvial and sedimentation hazards in semi- and arid regions because episodic rainfall-runoff events can result in debris, mud, and fluvial flows through complex and, in some cases, migratory channel systems. Further, in semi- and arid climates alluvial fans often end in terminal or playa lakes. Given the uniform topography of playa lakes, these features often present ideal locations for facilities such as airports; however, regardless of the engineering advantages of the topography, the episodic and often long-term flooding of these lakes attracts migratory birds. The purpose of this volume is to summarize the current state-of-the-art, from the viewpoint of engineering, in the identification and mitigation of flood hazard on alluvial fans; and to accomplish this a fundamental understanding of geology is required.

Water Quality Modeling - River Transport and Surface Exchange, Volume I (Hardcover, New): Richard H. French Water Quality Modeling - River Transport and Surface Exchange, Volume I (Hardcover, New)
Richard H. French; Steven C. McCutcheon
R16,665 Discovery Miles 166 650 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This fascinating work is divided into two main sections. Part I reviews the basic principles of water movement in channels and the mass balance approach common to most models. It also covers the practical usefulness, model peer review, and guidance on model selection and calibration. Part II discusses flow simulation and prediction of time of travel, dye tracing and mixing, heat balance and temperature modeling, and reaeration and volatilization. This interesting, easy-to-read volume includes comprehensive reviews for the use of fluorescent water tracing dyes, longitudinal dispersion, evaporation and wind speed functions, prediction of saturation concentrations of dissolved oxygen, and reaeration coefficients. This book furnishes the reader with appendices which provide a synopsis of available computer models and gives a comprehensive listing of methods used to measure flow rates in rivers, tributaries, and pipes and channels introducing wastewaters into streams. This volume is a valuable, indispensable reference for all researchers, instructors, students in advanced environmental modeling courses, and practicing engineers.
