The Backbone of History - Health and Nutrition in the Western Hemisphere (Hardcover): Richard H. Steckel, Jerome C. Rose The Backbone of History - Health and Nutrition in the Western Hemisphere (Hardcover)
Richard H. Steckel, Jerome C. Rose
R3,628 Discovery Miles 36 280 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This study gathers skeletal evidence on seven basic indicators of health to assess chronic conditions that affected individuals who lived in the Western Hemisphere from 5000 B.C. to the late nineteenth century. Signs of biological stress in childhood and of degeneration in joints and in teeth increased in the several millenia before the arrival of Columbus as populations moved into less healthy ecological environments.

R1,388 Discovery Miles 13 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

For the same reasons that explorers of the early twentieth century strove to reach the poles, and their modern counterparts journey to outer space, most people want to visualize the contours of the human experience - the peaks of adaptive success that led to the expansion of civilization, and the troughs in which human presence ebbed. The Backbone of History defines the emerging field of macrobioarchaeology by gathering skeletal evidence on seven basic indicators of health to assess chronic conditions that affected individuals who lived in the Western Hemisphere from 5000 BC to the late nineteenth century. Signs of biological stress in childhood and of degeneration in joints and in teeth increased in the several millennia before the arrival of Columbus as populations moved into less healthy ecological environments. Thus, pre-Colombian Native Americans were among the healthiest and the least healthy groups to live in the Western Hemisphere before the twentieth century.

The Backbone of Europe - Health, Diet, Work and Violence over Two Millennia (Hardcover): Richard H. Steckel, Clark Spencer... The Backbone of Europe - Health, Diet, Work and Violence over Two Millennia (Hardcover)
Richard H. Steckel, Clark Spencer Larsen, Charlotte A. Roberts, Joerg Baten
R2,503 Discovery Miles 25 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Using human skeletal remains, this volume traces health, workload and violence in the European population over the past 2,000 years. Health was surprisingly good for people who lived during the early Medieval Period. The Plague of Justinian of the sixth century was ultimately beneficial for health because the smaller population had relatively more resources that contributed to better living conditions. Increasing population density and inequality in the following centuries imposed an unhealthy diet - poor in protein - on the European population. With the onset of the Little Ice Age in the late Middle Ages, a further health decline ensued, which was not reversed until the nineteenth century. While some aspects of health declined, other attributes improved. During the early modern period, interpersonal violence (outside of warfare) declined possibly because stronger states and institutions were able to enforce compromise and cooperation. European health over the past two millennia was hence multifaceted in nature.

A Population History of North America (Hardcover): Michael R. Haines, Richard H. Steckel A Population History of North America (Hardcover)
Michael R. Haines, Richard H. Steckel
R3,820 Discovery Miles 38 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Professors Haines and Steckel bring together leading scholars to present an expansive population history of North America from pre-Columbian times to the present. Covering the populations of Canada, the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean, including two essays on the Amerindian population, this volume takes advantage of considerable recent progress in demographic history to offer timely, knowlegeable information in a nontechnical format. A statistical appendix summarizes basic demographic measures over time for the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
