R4,370 Discovery Miles 43 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Higher education in the UK is in crisis. The idea of the public university is under assault, and both the future of the sector and its relationship to society are being gambled. Higher education is increasingly unaffordable, its historic institutions are becoming untenable, and their purpose is resolutely instrumental. What and who have led us to this crisis? What are the alternatives? To whom do we look for leadership in revealing those alternatives? This book critically analyses intellectual leadership in the university, exploring ongoing efforts from around the world to create alternative models for organizing higher education and the production of knowledge. Its authors offer their experience and views from inside and beyond the structures of mainstream higher education, in order to reflect on efforts to create alternatives. In the process the volume asks: is it possible to re imagine the university democratically and co operatively? If so, what are the implications for leadership not just within the university but also in terms of higher education's relationship to society? The authors argue that mass higher education is at the point where it no longer reflects the needs, capacities and long term interests of global society. An alternative role and purpose is required, based upon 'mass intellectuality' or the real possibility of democracy in learning and the production of knowledge.

Long George Alley - A Novel (Paperback): Richard Hall Long George Alley - A Novel (Paperback)

R380 Discovery Miles 3 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Long George Alley is written in twenty-two points of view. Set in Natchez, Mississippi, during the Summer of 1965, it covers two days in the lives of local blacks, whites, and the idealistic young civil rights workers who've come to town to organize black voters and integrate public facilities. But racial tension and Ku Klux Klan violence are running high. And many local blacks--impoverished and apathetic--are resigned to the traditional Jim Crow system of the old South. One goal of the civil rights workers is a march on Duncan Park, an oasis of lush green lawns, a swimming pool and golf course. Where Whites relax and Blacks are allowed to drive through. During the march on Duncan Park, blacks and whites alike are compelled to search their souls and stand up for what they believe in. Long George Alley is a strikingly evocative statement about the glory, hate, and pain which the racial issue arouses, and which still tear at the fabric of America today. The spectrum of reactions explored in this book will not fail to awaken a response.

The Palgrave International Handbook of Marxism and Education (1st ed. 2023): Richard Hall, Inny Accioly, Krystian Szadkowski The Palgrave International Handbook of Marxism and Education (1st ed. 2023)

R6,221 Discovery Miles 62 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Palgrave International Handbook of Marxism and Education is an international and interdisciplinary volume, which provides a thorough and precise engagement with emergent developments in Marxist theory in both the global South and North. Drawing on the work of authoritative scholars and practitioners, the handbook explicitly shows how these developments enable a rich historical and material understanding of the full range of education sectors and contexts. The handbook proceeds in a spirit of openness and dialogue within and between various conceptions and traditions of Marxism and brings those conceptions into dialogue with their critics and other anti-capitalist traditions. As such, it contributes to the development of Marxist analyses that push beyond established limits, by engaging with fresh perspectives and views that disrupt established perspectives.

Josiah Royce for the Twenty-first Century - Historical, Ethical, and Religious Interpretations (Hardcover, New): Kelly Parker,... Josiah Royce for the Twenty-first Century - Historical, Ethical, and Religious Interpretations (Hardcover, New)
Kelly Parker, Krzysztof Skowronski; Contributions by Zbigniew Ambrozewicz, Marc M Anderson, Randall Auxier, …
R2,929 Discovery Miles 29 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The sixteen chapters of Josiah Royce for the Twenty-first Century are papers from the Fourth Annual Conference on American and European Values / International Conference on Josiah Royce, held at the Institute of Philosophy, University of Opole, Poland in June 2008. The presentation of diverse perspectives, and the development of many distinctive, promising strands of inquiry from the spring of Royce s work, establish that Royce offers significant resources for a number of areas of contemporary philosophy. The book is organized into four parts: (I) Historical Reinterpretations, (II) Ethics: Interpretations of Loyalty, (III) Religious Philosophy, and (IV) Contemporary Implications. Section I considers Royce s position in the history if ideas, with papers on his account of individuation, his expansion on a key idea from Kant, his use and contribution to mathematical and philosophical conceptions of the infinite and the absolute, and his adaptation of Peircean semiotics. Sections II and III consist of focused readings of Royce s work regarding ethics and religious philosophy, respectively. Section IV is the most diverse in the topics covered, with papers that bring Royce into contemporary discussions of psychology, of the problem of reference, of Rortyan neo-pragmatism, and of literary aesthetics. The purpose of the Opole conference was to elicit fresh perspectives on the work of Josiah Royce from an international group of contributors. This collection achieves that aim by presenting new approaches to relatively familiar writings, by drawing out promising implications of Roycean themes, and by making genuinely new applications of his ideas. Josiah Royce for the Twenty-first Century presents a rich interaction among a diverse mix of commentators, who retrieve and construct promising new insights from the work of one of America's greatest thinkers."

New computer and communications technologies have acted as the catalyst for a revolution in the way goods are produced and services delivered, leading to profound changes in the way work is organized and the way jobs are designed. This important book examines the nature, setting and impact of new technologies on work, organization and management. Conventional debates about new technology often invoke optimistic visions of enhanced democracy, rising skills and economic abundance; others predict darker scenarios such as the destruction of jobs through labour-eliminating devices. This book proposes an alternative perspective, arguing that technology can be powerful, but in and of itself has no independent causal powers. It considers the impact of new technologies on manufacturing, clerical, administrative and call centre employment, in both managerial and professional arenas, and introduces the growing phenomena of telework. The book also assesses the important political and economic forces that restrict or facilitate the flow of new technologies on national and global levels. New Technology @ Work is an illuminating and thought-provoking text that will prove invaluable to all serious students of business, management and technology.

Higher education is increasingly unable to engage usefully with global emergencies, as its functions are repurposed for value. Discourses of entrepreneurship, impact and excellence, realised through competition and the market, mean that academics and students are increasingly alienated from themselves and their work. This book applies Marx's concept of alienation to the realities of academic life in the Global North, in order to explore how the idea of public education is subsumed under the law of value. In a landscape of increased commodification of higher education, the book explores the relationship between alienation and crisis, before analysing how academic knowledge, work, identity and life are themselves alienated. Finally, it argues that through indignant struggle, another world is possible, grounded in alternative forms of organising life and producing socially-useful knowledge, ultimately requiring the abolition of academic labour. This pioneering work will be of interest and value to all those working in the higher education sector, as well as those concerned with the rise of neoliberalism and marketization within universities.

1755 marked the point at which events in America ceased to be considered subsidiary affairs in the great international rivalry that existed between the colonial powers of Great Britain and France. This book examines the Braddock Campaign of 1755, a segment of the wider 'Braddock Plan' that aimed to drive the French from all of the contested regions they occupied in North America. Rather than being an archetypal military history-styled analysis of General Edward Braddock's foray into the Ohio Valley, this work will argue that British defeat at the infamous Battle of the Monongahela should be viewed as one that ultimately embodied military, political and diplomatic divergences and weaknesses within the British Atlantic World of the eighteenth century. These factors, in turn, hinted at growing schisms in the empire that would lead to the breakup of British North America in the 1770s and the birth of the future United States. Such an interpretation moves away from the conclusion so often advanced that Braddock's Defeat was a distinctly, and principally 'British', martial catastrophe; hence allowing the outcome of this pivotal event in American history to be understood in a different vein than has hitherto been apparent.

The Justice of War - Its Foundations in Ethics and Natural Law (Hardcover): Richard Hall The Justice of War - Its Foundations in Ethics and Natural Law (Hardcover)
Richard Hall
R2,415 Discovery Miles 24 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Justice of War: Its Foundations in Ethics and Natural Law puts normative ethical theory at the forefront in its discussion of the justice of war. Situating the modern theory of just war in its historical context, Richard A. S. Hall gives full attention to natural law, a mainstay of just war theory. Hall considers the American philosopher Josiah Royce’s implicit theory of just war with its suggestion of a fourth component of just war theory (in addition to jus ad bellum and jus in bello), namely, jus ad pacem--justice/law for or about peace--concerning the prevention of war and the maintenance of peace. This book addresses, and answers affirmatively, the following questions raised by just war theory: Can just war theory be rationally defended against its realpolitik critics? Can there by such a thing as a just or moral war? The book aims at showing the doubters and critics that just war theory is a viable alternative to both the political realism of realpolitik and pacifism. In brief, war can be morally justified, though under very restrictive conditions.
