Experience the adventures of the eighteenth century as The
Fur-Lined Crypt takes you into the harsh and unforgiving lifestyle
of the men who spent their very souls in the early North American
fur trade. These men of grit and courage unveiled the mysteries of
the hinterland and its uncharted rivers, forests, and plains, thus
opening the way for civilization and settlement of a new continent.
The Hudson's Bay Company and its various forts and trading centers
provided a vital service and offered a unique entrance into the
continent's heartland. Frequently it was their employees who were
among the first Europeans to discover and enter what was not always
a friendly land. These fur traders surveyed, mapped rivers, and
discovered previously unknown peoples. In the end, they lifted the
veil of distance and found ways to overcome the inhospitable
climate that hid the land's wealth and potential. They forged the
requisite alliances with the native peoples who, perhaps
unwittingly, provided the fuel that kindled the commerce of the
day. A window into this lawless society reveals cruelty mixed with
compassion, love overcoming hate, and survival in a dangerous
world. This historically accurate chronicle threads an intriguing
yarn of human perseverance through the pain and anguish of living
in isolation far from loved ones.
Richard Jensen offers a new interpretation of the last 180 years of
American political history--one seen from the grass roots
perspective. He is concerned with the individual voter's
relationship to the party, the issues, and the campaigns. He
explores the evolution of American political parties in terms of
their appeal to individual voters, of the issues selected, and
campaign strategies. He examines different voter coalitions that
formed and dissolved during the past 175 years and explains the
dynamics of group affiliation with one or the other party. He
demonstrates how the electorate has modernized over time and
assesses the issues raised, and the values challenged by the
process of political modernization. Jensen offers his own theory of
campaign strategy, sketching its evolution from army-like
organization to modern advertising. The second half of the book is
a collection of documents describing important political issues and
political coalitions through the years. These readings reveal how
politicians at the grass roots level thought, what tactics they
used, and how the average voter responded to their appeals.
This broad-based study of Western-Asian relations considers
images of and actions by the United States, along with Britain and
Germany, in the course of dealings with Asian nations such as
China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Other
case studies focus on inter-Asian relations between Japan and
Korea; China and Japan; and Thailand and Vietnam. The essays
encompass a wide range of recent scholarship, including cultural,
economic, demographic, and intellectual approaches to military and
diplomatic themes.
Western influence, primarily American, in Asia grew consistently
during the 20th century. While interaction often occurred on
unequal terms, this study reveals the ability of Asians to assert
their agency in the face of such immense Western power. The
collection as a whole offers a window on relations across the
Pacific in numerous spheres of activity over the course of one
hundred years. As such, it introduces and adds to our understanding
of the depth and variety of trans-Pacific relations.

Conference on Rough Sets and Current Trends in Computing (RSCTC
2010) held at the University of Warsaw, Poland, during June 28-30,
2010. This was the seventh edition of the event that has
established itself as the main forum for exchange of ideas between
researchersin various areasrelated to rough sets. In 2010, the
conference went back to its origins both in terms of its location
(the ?rst RSCTC conference was held in Warsaw, Poland in 1998) and
in terms of topic coverage. The dates also markthe third
anniversaryofRSEISP 2007-a conference dedicated to the memory of

In keeping with the spirit of past rough set-based conferences,
RSCTC 2010 aimed to explore synergies with other closely related
areas such as computational intelligence, knowledgedisc- ery from
databases and data mining, non-conventional models of computation,
andWebmining.Majortopicscoveredintheseproceedingsinclude:
approximate anduncertainreasoning, bioinformatics,
dataandtextmining, dominance-based roughsetapproaches,
evolutionarycomputing, fuzzysettheoryandapplications, logical and
mathematical foundations of rough sets, perceptual systems as well
as applications of rough sets and its extensions in areas such as
medicine, Web intelligence and image processing. The papers
included in the special and - dustrial sessions cover learning
methods and mining of complex data, soft c- puting applications to
multimedia and telemedicine, knowledge representation and exchange
in multi-agent systems and emerging intelligent technologies in the
telecommunications industry. There were 148 valid (out of 163 in
total) submissions to RSCTC 2010. Every paper was examined by at
least two reviewers. Out of the papers initially selected,

This book contains the papers presented at the 20th UK Workshop on
Computational Intelligence (UKCI 2021), held virtually by
Aberystwyth University, 8-10th September 2021. This marks the 20th
anniversary of UKCI; a testament to the increasing role and
importance of Computational Intelligence (CI) and the continuing
interest in its development. UKCI provides a forum for the academic
community and industry to share ideas and experience in this field.
EDMA 2021, the 4th International Engineering Data- and Model-Driven
Applications workshop, is also incorporated and held in conjunction
with UKCI 2021. Paper submissions were invited in the areas of
fuzzy systems, neural networks, evolutionary computation, machine
learning, data mining, cognitive computing, intelligent robotics,
hybrid methods, deep learning and applications of CI.
Fueled by recent films and TV series such as Saving Private Ryan
and Band of Brothers and popular books by Stephen Ambrose and Tom
Brokaw, interest in World War II has soared. As a result of this
surge of attention, the number of websites on World War II has
exploded. Many are excellent sources of information, but how can
they be found among the massive number of sites? Search engines
can't tell the good from the bad, making the process of uncovering
quality World War II sites a frustrating and time-consuming process
of sifting through hundreds of thousands of hits. But now, web
users overwhelmed by this colossal task have a place to turn. World
War II on the Web gives history buffs all the tools they need to
zero in on the most useful sites. The authors-experts in web
research-have examined and evaluated thousands of websites. In this
new book, they have included only the most well constructed,
informative, attractively designed sites on World War II. This
book/CD-ROM is modeled on SR Books' bestselling Civil War on the
Web, another indispensable guide to exceptional websites. World War
II on the Web includes: i Detailed reviews of the top 100+ sites i
A one- to five-star rating of each site's content, aesthetics, and
navigation i A list of approximately 150 additional recommended
sites including URLs and brief descriptions i Free CD-ROM (IBM and
MAC compatible) with hotlinks to all sites in the book-the top 100+
sites as well as the 150 additional recommended sites. Users can
simply click on the link to be taken to the site they've chosen.
The first part of the book highlights the best 100+ sites and is
divided into sections on the following topics: general sites on the
war; political and military leaders;
European/Atlantic/Mediterranean Theater of Operations; Pacific
Theatre of Operations; the soldiers' stories; the homefront; women
and African Americans; the Holocaust and war crimes; and unit
histories. The second part of World War II on the Web o
