Seen and Unseen Worlds - Private Memoirs of a Former Jesuit (Hardcover): J Richard Murray Seen and Unseen Worlds - Private Memoirs of a Former Jesuit (Hardcover)
J Richard Murray
R1,403 Discovery Miles 14 030 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Since 451 A.D., at the Council of Chalcedon, Christians have prayed a credo-a short summary of their belief-during Mass which begins: "I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and earth and of all things seen and unseen." With that belief, they see the unseen: God, His Blessed Mother, the Angels, the Saints, and Satan, the fallen Archangel. This touching memoir asserts the fact that we live in two different worlds-the ever-changing one we see with our human eyes and the ever-constant one we see with our eyes of faith. Seen and Unseen Worlds: Private Memoirs of a Former Jesuit is a very human introduction to living faith by a young man who was part of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) for nearly twelve years. The book culminates with Murray's decision to leave the Society in 1956. This book is for people of all religions and ages because it deals with life, destiny, the world we know, and the world we cannot yet know. Medical Textiles (Paperback): Holly Morris, Richard Murray Medical Textiles (Paperback)
Holly Morris, Richard Murray
R4,919 Discovery Miles 49 190 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This textbook aims to ensure that advances in medical textiles are addressed and that recent developments are able to be appreciated and understood not only by medical practitioners and healthcare personnel but also by textile scientists and technologists. The idea is to stimulate collaborative research and development in the field of medical textiles and to equip researchers with an understanding of the steps they need to take to ensure that their efforts, be they to develop new devices for implantation or items for external application, are carried out in such a way as to improve their effectiveness and enhance the prospects for their implementation. Attention is drawn to the need to improve outcomes in the practical setting and to guidance on the detailed planning required prior to engaging in experimental work. Standard tests can help researchers to monitor performance, but for some important applications such as those required to demonstrate antimicrobial and fluid-repellent performance in most items of protective wear, standard tests consistently fall seriously short in terms of predicting how well they might work in the practical setting. Guidance is therefore given for their further development. Chapters within the textbook cover: The history of innovation within medical textiles with particular attention given to key concepts of the latter part of the 19th Century and subsequent associated developments. Textile and polymer science underpinning fibres, fabrics, nano-fibre technology and the functional finishes that can be applied to enhance the performance of medical textile products. Woven, knitted, nonwoven and braided fabrics and the key performance characteristics of each fabric type which make them particularly suited to specific medical textile roles such as mesh, grafts, filtration and scaffolds for tissue engineering. Implantable medical textiles, non-implantable medical textiles, health and hygiene products and extracorporeal devices that use textile products. Legislative requirements for medical devices. The design of experiments and suitability for purpose of textile test methods. Case studies to illustrate how medical textiles are applied in practice. The book provides essential reading for textile professionals, biomedical engineers, and others involved in the research, design and engineering of medical and healthcare appliances, and for those employed in the medical profession wishing to gain new insights into the wealth of materials at their disposal.

Scott Downman, Richard Murray
R757 Discovery Miles 7 570 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

At a time when digital technologies are impacting on the success and sustainability of traditional models of journalism, hyperlocal journalism seeks to restore journalistic integrity, build community, incite change and engage audiences. This book argues for the increased importance of these new forms of localized reporting in the digital age. Hyperlocal Journalism and Digital Disruptions begins with the fundamental question of what hyperlocal journalism is, then focuses on three case studies which illustrate its potential to thrive when the right balance is struck between audience engagement, investment and respect. Each case study examines a different start-up in Australia and New Zealand. Although the notion of hyperlocal journalism is not new, the ways in which these regionalized stories are now being told has evolved. This book demonstrates the increased necessity for tailored approaches to creating and providing hyperlocal journalism in order to engage targeted audiences, meet their needs for news and reclaim authenticity and credibility for journalism. This is a valuable resource for researchers, academics, students and practitioners in the areas of Digital Journalism and Media Studies generally.

Counter-Terrorism Laws and Freedom of Expression - Global Perspectives (Paperback): Tewodros Workneh, Paul Haridakis Counter-Terrorism Laws and Freedom of Expression - Global Perspectives (Paperback)
Tewodros Workneh, Paul Haridakis; Contributions by Rebecca Ananian-Welsh, Nazli Bu lay Dogan, Peter Greste, …
R1,091 Discovery Miles 10 910 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

As nations have aggressively implemented a wide range of mechanisms to proactively curb potential threats terrorism, Counter-Terrorism Laws and Freedom of Expression: Global Perspectives offers critical insight into how counter-terrorism laws have adversely affected journalism practice, digital citizenship, privacy, online activism, and other forms of expression. While governments assert the need for such laws to protect national security, critics argue counter-terrorism laws are prone to be misappropriated by state actors who use such laws to quash political dissent, target journalists, and restrict other forms of citizen expression. The book is divided into three parts. Part I deals with the politics and discourse of counter-terrorism laws. Part II focuses on the ways counter-terrorism laws have impacted journalistic practice in different countries, with effects ranging from imprisonment of reporters to self-censorship. Part III addresses how counter-terrorism laws have been used to target everyday citizens, social media activists, whistleblowers, and human rights advocates around the world. Together, the chapters address how counter-terrorism laws have undermined democratic values in both authoritarian and liberal political contexts. Scholars of political science, communication, and legal studies will find this book particularly interesting.

The John Ireland Companion (Hardcover): Lewis Foreman The John Ireland Companion (Hardcover)
Lewis Foreman; Contributions by Colin Scott-Sutherland, Bruce Phillips, Alan Rowlands, Fiona Richards, …
R1,975 Discovery Miles 19 750 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Published to coincide with the 50th anniversary of his death, this book presents new articles by leading authorities on John Ireland and his music, together with transcriptions of his broadcast talks and of interviews with the composer. John Ireland [1879-1962] was one of the most distinctive and distinguished of a generation of exceptional British composers that included Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst, Frank Bridge and Arnold Bax. They emerged in the decade before the First World War and, in the inter-war years, produced a remarkable body of music. In Ireland's case his was not only the most popular British Piano Concerto of its time, but he also composed a splendid repertoire of songs, piano music, chamber music and orchestral and choral scores. This richly illustrated Companion will be essential for all admirers of the composer. Not only for the performer - pianist, singer, conductor - but for thewider musical public, record collectors and music historians, academics and anyone interested in British music of the earlier twentieth century. Lewis Foreman has drawn on his extensive research into Ireland's life and letters over many years, and, in association with the John Ireland Charitable Trust, has not only commissioned a wide range of chapters from leading performers and writers of today, but has brought together in one convenient format Ireland's own writings on music, the memories of his friends and students (including Britten, Moeran and Arnell) and a selection of important earlier articles. The Companion also includes a complete list of works and themost comprehensive discography of Ireland ever compiled. The accompanying CD contains historical recordings featuring the voice of John Ireland, with two of his broadcast talks, as well as otherwise unobtainable performances of Ireland's music from the composer himself and from other well-known performers of the past. LEWIS FOREMAN is author of Bax: A Composer and His Time [Boydell, 2007] and London: a Musical Gazetteer [Yale 2005].
