In the age of climate change, the possibility that dramatic
environmental transformations might cause the dislocation of
millions of people has become not only a matter for scientific
speculation or science-fiction narratives, but the object of
strategic planning and military analysis. Environmental History of
Modern Migrations offers a worldwide perspective on the history of
migrations throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and
provides an opportunity to reflect on the global ecological
transformations and developments which have occurred throughout the
last few centuries. With a primary focus on the
environment/migration nexus, this book advocates that global
environmental changes are not distinct from global social
transformations. Instead, it offers a progressive method of
combining environmental and social history, which manages to both
encompass and transcend current approaches to environmental justice
issues. This edited collection will be of great interest to
students and practitioners of environmental history and migration
studies, as well as those with an interest in history and
sociology.
Explore the naive art of late 19th and early 20th century shooting
gallery targets, whole galleries, and arcade forms. Commonly seen
on early midways and carnivals, as well as in saloons and other
public places of amusement, here, in a presentation of compelling
color photographs, are the rarest and most aesthetically pleasing
decorative targets and arcade forms known. The progression from the
world of shooting gallery and arcade forms, as well as painted
American fixtures and accessories, to contemporary art and
sculpture has been a natural evolution. Also featured are examples
of other amusement attractions to which the visitor to the
carnival, circus, or midway would have been exposed. A few European
forms are included to illustrate the difference between them and
American forms.
The contributions to the volume examine in detail diverse
aspects of second language education, ranging from a focus on the
basic contributions of linguistic theory and research to our
understanding of second language learning and teaching on the one
hand, to a series of reviews of innovative language education
practices in selected regions of the world on the other.
In many parts of the world, it is common for a child to grow up
speaking a local language at home, another in the market place,
adding another to her repertoire as a lingua franca, and then
adding a language of wider communication such as English or French
if she continues her formal schooling.

For the purposes of this volume, second language education has been
defined operationally to encompass education which occurs in those
settings and situations in which a dominant language is offered as
a second language (e.g., ESL in England or the United States
whether as a subject of study or a vehicle through which other
material is studied), as well as those cases in which an official,
but not necessarily dominant, language is mandated (e.g., French or
English in certain parts of the Middle East or the Mahgreb). The
contributions also focus mainly, albeit not exclusively, on second
language education for school-aged learners.

This book is a compendium of thirty-six articles by participants in
the development of the field of sociolinguistics. Edited by
Christina Bratt Paulston and G. Richard Tucker, themselves
important contributors to the discipline, the volume provides an
insider's perspective on the issues, both practical and
theoretical, which motivated individuals and institutions to turn
to a view of language as inextricably connected to society and
culture. This volume will be of interest not only to
sociolinguists, but to sociologists, social psychologists,
anthropological linguists, and others interested in applied
linguistics. Moving a bit farther afield, it will also be of
interest to historians of science for its breadth of coverage of
the development of an increasingly important academic discipline
and for the important data it provides regarding the academic
research milieu, the zeitgeist, which spawned sociolinguistics as
an area of inquiry.
In order for educational systems not to become stagnant, teaching
strategies must be routinely re-evaluated. Not only does this
optimize the learning process, but it enhances the overall
experience for the students. Collaboration and Student Engagement
in Design Education is a pivotal reference source for the latest
scholarly research on the implementation of teamwork between
architecture students in design courses to enrich knowledge
attainment and boost creativity. Highlighting pedagogical insights
into team building and relevant case studies, this book is ideally
designed for educators, students, administrators, and professionals
interested in the development of effective design programs.
A few articles have been published about the environmental history
of World War II, and some books have touched on the period.
However, this is the first work that strives to open global
perspectives on the environmental history of that global war. The
Long Shadows is based on long-term research and an international
workshop that was organized by the editors in 2012. The selected
articles represent the best available studies in different fields
and countries. The book has a truly global approach because it
explores Europe, America, Asia, and Africa.
Contributors to this volume explore the dynamic between war and the
physical environment from a variety of provocative viewpoints. The
subjects of their essays range from conflicts in colonial India and
South Africa to the U.S. Civil War and twentieth-century wars in
Japan, Finland, and the Pacific Islands. Among the topics explored
are:
- the ways in which landscape can influence military
strategies
- why the decisive battle of the American Civil War was
fought
- the impact of war and peace on timber resources
- the spread of pests and disease in wartime.
