Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
First published in 1931. This re-issues the edition of 1972. This
translation and Wilhelm's invaluable commentaries provide a concise
and readable survey of Confucius, the man and his teachings. This
volume translates The Life of Confucius from an ancient Chinese
text, the Shih Chi, or The Historical Records by Sse-Ma Ch'ien,
dating from the turn of the second century B.C.
Fearless heroes, feisty princesses, sly magicians, terrifying
dragons, talking foxes and miniature dogs. They all feature in this
enthralling compendium of Chinese fairy tales and legends, along
with an array of equally colourful characters and captivating
plots. Although largely unknown in the West, the 73 stories in this
volume are just as beguiling as the more familiar Grimms' Fairy
Tales or Arabian Nights. They were collected in the early 20th
century by Richard Wilhelm and first translated into English by
Frederick H Martens. This beautifully produced revised and edited
new edition includes updated notes which not only provide
background on the tales, but also offer a fascinating insight into
ancient Chinese folk lore and culture. These are stories to return
to time and time again. From awesome adventures to quirky
allegories, from the exploits of the gods to fables about beggars
who outwit their betters, Chinese Fairy Tales and Legends is
extraordinarily diverse and endlessly engaging. These wonderful
stories have enduring and universal appeal, and will intrigue both
children and adults.
The ancient Taoist text that forms the central part of this book
was discovered by Wilhelm, who recognized it as essentially a
practical guide to the integration of personality. Foreword and
Appendix by Carl Jung; illustrations. Translated by Cary F.

I CHING Or book of changes At least 5,000 years old, the I Ching is a book of oracles containing the whole of human experience. Used for divination, it is a method of exploring the unconscious; through the symbolism of its hexagrams we are guided towards the solution of difficult problems and life situations. It can also be read as a book of wisdom revealing the laws of life to which we must all attune ouserlves if we are to live in peace and harmony. Richard Wihelm's version of the I Ching, first published in English in 1951 and reprinted many times since then, has become recognised as the standard and most reliable edition.
The West's foremost translator of the "I Ching, " Richard
Wilhelm thought deeply about how contemporary readers could benefit
from this ancient work and its perennially valid insights into
change and chance. For him and for his son, Hellmut Wilhelm, the
"Book of Changes" represented not just a mysterious book of oracles
or a notable source of the Taoist and Confucian philosophies. In
their hands, it emerges, as it did for C. G. Jung, as a vital key
to humanity's age-old collective unconscious. Here the observations
of the Wilhelms are combined in a volume that will reward
specialists and aficionados with its treatment of historical
context--and that will serve also as an introduction to the "I
Ching" and the meaning of its famous hexagrams.
Wilhelm frequently wrote and lectured on the Book of Changes,
supplying guidelines to its ideas and ways of thinking. Collected
here are four lectures he gave between 1926 and 1929. The lectures
are significant not only for what they reveal about Chinese
tradition and culture, but also for their reflections of the
scholarly and cultural milieu prevalent in Germany during that
time.
