The Iliad of Homer (Paperback): Homer The Iliad of Homer (Paperback)
Homer; Translated by Richmond Lattimore; Introduction by Richard Martin
R509 Discovery Miles 5 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Sing, goddess, the anger of Peleus' son Achilleus / and its devastation." For sixty years, that's how Homer has begun the "Iliad" in English, in Richmond Lattimore's faithful translation--the gold standard for generations of students and general readers.
This long-awaited new edition of Lattimore's "Iliad" is designed to bring the book into the twenty-first century--while leaving the "poem" as firmly rooted in ancient Greece as ever. Lattimore's elegant, fluent verses--with their memorably phrased heroic epithets and remarkable fidelity to the Greek--remain unchanged, but classicist Richard Martin has added a wealth of supplementary materials designed to aid new generations of readers. A new introduction sets the poem in the wider context of Greek life, warfare, society, and poetry, while line-by-line notes at the back of the volume offer explanations of unfamiliar terms, information about the Greek gods and heroes, and literary appreciation. A glossary and maps round out the book.
The result is a volume that actively invites readers into Homer's poem, helping them to understand fully the worlds in which he and his heroes lived--and thus enabling them to marvel, as so many have for centuries, at Hektor and Ajax, Paris and Helen, and the devastating rage of Achilleus.

Sophocles Sophocles, Mark Griffith, Glenn W. Most, David Grene, Richmond Lattimore
R456 Discovery Miles 4 560 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Sixty years ago, the University of Chicago Press undertook a momentous project: a new translation of the Greek tragedies that would be the ultimate resource for teachers, students, and readers. They succeeded. Under the expert management of eminent classicists David Grene and Richmond Lattimore, those translations combined accuracy, poetic immediacy, and clarity of presentation to render the surviving masterpieces of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides in an English so lively and compelling that they remain the standard translations. Today, Chicago is taking pains to ensure that our Greek tragedies remain the leading English-language versions throughout the twenty-first century. In this highly anticipated third edition, Mark Griffith and Glenn W. Most have carefully updated the translations to bring them even closer to the ancient Greek while retaining the vibrancy for which our English versions are famous. This edition also includes brand-new translations of Euripides' "Medea", "The Children of Heracles", "Andromache", and "Iphigenia among the Taurians", fragments of lost plays by Aeschylus, and the surviving portion of Sophocles' satyr-drama "The Trackers". New introductions for each play offer essential information about its first production, plot, and reception in antiquity and beyond. In addition, each volume includes an introduction to the life and work of its tragedian, as well as notes addressing textual uncertainties and a glossary of names and places mentioned in the plays. In addition to the new content, the volumes have been reorganized both within and between volumes to reflect the most up-to-date scholarship on the order in which the plays were originally written. The result is a set of handsome paperbacks destined to introduce new generations of readers to these foundational works of Western drama, art, and life.

Iphigeneia in Tauris (Paperback): Euripides Iphigeneia in Tauris (Paperback)
Euripides; Translated by Richmond Lattimore
R414 Discovery Miles 4 140 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The modern reader may have difficulty conceiving of Iphigeneia in Tauris as tragedy, for the term in our sense is associated with downfall, death, and disaster. But to the ancient Greeks, the use of heroic legend, the tragic diction and meters, and the tragic actors would have defined it as pure tragedy, the happy ending notwithstanding. While not one of his "deep" dramatic works, the play is Euripidean in many respects, above all in its recurrent theme of escape, symbolized in the rescue of Iphigeneia by Artemis, to whom she was about to be sacrificed.

Richmond Lattimore--who has been called the dean of American translators--has translated Iphigeneia in Tauris with skill and subtlety, revealing it as one of the most delicately written and beautifully contrived of the Euripidean "romances."

The Poetry of Greek Tragedy (Paperback, Revised): Richmond Lattimore The Poetry of Greek Tragedy (Paperback, Revised)
Richmond Lattimore
R742 Discovery Miles 7 420 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Is Sophocles the poet "more important" than Sophocles the moralist, Sophocles the student of character, or Sophocles the storyteller? In this acclaimed work, eminent classicist Richmond Lattimore examines the complex and varied ways in which Greek poetry contributes to Greek drama. While acknowledging the difficulty of separating poetry--especially in translation--from other aspects of language, Lattimore offers keen insight into plays by Aeschylus ( "The Suppliant Maidens," "The Persians," "The Seven against Thebes," "Prometheus Bound"), Sophocles ( "Ajax," "Oedipus Tyrannus"), and Euripides ( "Medea," "Helen," "The Bacchae").

Richmond Lattimore
R474 Discovery Miles 4 740 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Professor Lattimore, holding closely to the original metres, has produced renderings of great power and beauty. His feeling for the telling noun and verb, the simple yet poignant epithet, and the dramatic turn of syntax is marked. He has completely freed the poems from sentimentality, and the thrilling ancient names--Anacreon, Alcaeus, Simonides, Sappho--acquire fresh brilliance and vitality under his hand.--Louise Bogan, The New Yorker
The significant quality of Mr. Lattimore's versions is that they are pure. The lenses he provides are as clear as our language is capable of making them.--Moses Hadas, N.Y. Herald Tribune
