Form enthalten.
This book investigates the parliamentary negotiation of executive
secrecy. Parliaments depend on information to fulfil their roles as
the people’s representatives, legislators and overseers of the
executive. However, there are examples of executive secrecy across
all policy fields. How, then, do parliamentary actors try to
reconcile secrecy and the normative demands of an open, democratic
society? This volume analyses parliamentary arguments, conflicts
and patterns of agreement around this topic in the case of Germany.
Based on two case studies – intelligence agencies secrecy and
Public Private Partnership secrecy – it argues that substantive
justifications of secrecy focusing on necessity are highly
contested. By contrast, procedural legitimation of secrecy, namely
deciding about it democratically, is crucial. Still, there are
inherent limits to the legitimation of executive secrecy. The book
therefore underlines the fragility of secrecy’s legitimation, and
its need for constant actualisation.
Policy makers tend to deal with future risks by increasing the
standardisation of national educational systems, a process
supported by global educational policy ideas, quality assurance
mechanisms and governing instruments and practices. This book
presents the reader with tools to challenge accepted ideas about
the standardising forces transforming educational reality, by
discussing standards and standardisation from a range of different
theoretical perspectives and contexts and posing questions such as:
Why do we think about education through the lenses of standards?
What are the assumed conditions underpinning the idea of standards?
Organised into three sections, the historical, theoretical, and
philosophical discussions in the first and third sections of the
book underscore how educational standards as a phenomenon can be
understood in a variety of ways, giving readers insight in to the
ambiguous and situated aspects of the phenomenon. Six case studies
in the middle section provide an international approach to the
study of standards, illuminating how standards simultaneously
represent a global and a context specific phenomenon. Across the
diversity of theoretical and empirical writings, the book not only
provide readers with insight but also broadens the scope of future
empirical analyses of the historical, political, and social
embeddedness of standards in education.
The book includes contributions on the latest model-based methods
for the development of personal and commercial vehicle control
devices. The main topics treated are: application of simulation and
model design to development of driver assistance systems; physical
and database model design for engines, motors, powertrain,
undercarriage and the whole vehicle; new simulation tools, methods
and optimization processes; applications of simulation in function
and software development; function and software testing using HiL,
MiL and SiL simulation; application of simulation and optimization
in application of control devices; automation approaches at all
stages of the development process.
In the popular imagination, no issue has been more closely linked
with the environmental group Greenpeace than whaling. Opposition to
commercial whaling has inspired many of the organization's most
dramatic and high-profile "direct actions"-as well as some of its
most notable failures. This book provides an inside look at one
such instance: Greenpeace's decades-long campaign against the
Norwegian whaling industry. Combining historical narrative with
systems-theory analysis, author Juliane Riese shows how the
organization's self-presentation as a David pitted against
whale-butchering Goliaths was turned on its head. She recounts how
opponents successfully discredited the campaign while Greenpeace
struggled with internal disagreements and other organizational
challenges, providing valuable lessons for other protest movements.

Peacebuilding is an interactive process that involves collaboration
between peacebuilders and the victorious elites of a postwar
society. While one of the most prominent assumptions of the
peacebuilding literature asserts that the interests of domestic
elites and peacebuilders coincide, Costly Democracy contends that
they rarely align. It reveals that, while domestic elites in
postwar societies may desire the resources that peacebuilders can
bring, they are often less eager to adopt democracy, believing that
democratic reforms may endanger their substantive interests. The
book offers comparative analyses of recent cases of peacebuilding
to deepen understanding of postwar democratization and better
explain why peacebuilding missions often bring peace—but seldom
democracy—to war-torn countries.
Politik in Deutschland?
fortschreitenden OEkonomisierung nachgeht.
Fernsehens in Spanien?
in unserem wichtigsten Urlaubsland ausserhalb Deutschlands in
mehrfacher Hinsicht "spanisch vorkommt".
