Part of the TED series: Follow Your Gut Today we study the brain
with painstaking detail. But we largely ignore what might prove to
be the most important part of our body: the trillions of microbes
that live inside us, especially in our gut. Increasingly, it looks
like the harmless bacteria we each have - or lack - may hold the
key to our most vexing health issues, including obesity, allergies,
asthma and digestive problems. Different people - even those in the
same ethnic group, geographic region and immediate family - may
have up to a 90% difference in the contents of our gut. (Compare
this with our DNA, where all humans, worldwide, are 99.99% the
same.) Evidence shows that small changes in the microbes present
(altered by antibiotics, diet, geographic region, and so on) may
affect weight, likelihood of disease and even psychological factors
like risk-taking behaviour. Knight and Buhler explore the
previously unseen world inside our bodies, in dynamic, accessible
prose geared towards a general audience. With a practical eye
towards deeper knowledge and better decisions, the book includes a
detailed tour of our "micro-biome" as well as an exploration of the
known effects of antibiotics, probiotics, diet choices, birth
method, and access to livestock on our children's lifelong health.
The book will guide readers on how to learn about their own
"microbiome" and take steps towards understanding and improving
their health, using the latest research as their guide.
This Three-Books-in-One package is probably the ultimate authority
in the field of child protection and safety, not only because the
primary author is an experienced police officer and law enforcement
college instructor, but because it is presented as training manuals
for both parents and children. The author states that "talking to"
your children is ineffective. Children who have been told never to
talk to or go with a stranger always fail when put to the test.
Children must be trained using sound principles of child education.
This book provides excellent information about child safety and
protection, plus the methodology to teach it effectively. The third
book in the package provides excellent stories and poems from the
"Days of Yore," with full color illustrations to teach children in
an entertaining manner.
Shale oil and gas have altered the energy landscape, possibly
permanently. They burst upon the fossil energy scene with a
suddenness that initially defied prediction. Even the political
balance of the world has changed. But, with the methods employed,
the vast majority of the oil and gas remains in the ground. At the
same time, serious environmental impact issues have been raised. A
new volume in the Emerging Issues in Analytical Chemistry series,
Sustainable Shale Oil and Gas: Analytical Chemistry, Geochemistry,
and Biochemistry Methods was written on the premise that analytical
methods to inform these areas were wanting. While not attempting to
be comprehensive, it describes important analytical methods, some
still in development. These methods are underpinned primarily by
chemistry, but geochemistry and even biochemistry play significant
roles. The book has a solutions flavor; problems are posed together
with approaches to ameliorate them.
